Football: Wolfpackers saw it coming; is there more ahead?

Tom O’Brien’s 2012 Wolfpack laid an egg of epic proportions last Saturday afternoon. The 33-6 loss to previously winless (in the ACC) Virginia is one of those losses that live with the die-hard fanbase forever — Click Here for more.

No matter how perplexing, Saturday’s loss (unfortunately) did not come as a total surprise to StateFans.

Last week before the game SFN opened a poll on our front page asking readers to choose the remaining game that the Wolfpack would lose from a subset of Virginia, Wake Forest, and Boston College? At first blush, I can understand such a poll feeling a little callous. We promoted the poll on our twitter account and immediately received a tweet from 99.9’s Adam Gold asking with incredulity if we were serious?

Well, pardon me for being an NC State fan, and being astute enough to raise the topic. As an NC State fan with over 40 years of personal experience and pain please allow me to ask you now — were we serious?

Hell, not only were we serious but we were pretty spot on!

I thought the vote distribution in our poll were interesting enough to share It is interesting that the votes prior to Saturday shook out with only 10% to 15% of State fans choosing Virginia as the team State would lose to before the end of the season. Wake Forest held the overwhelming majority of votes at about 65% to 70%, followed by Boston College with a tally that that was similar to the Cavs.

So, before the Virginia debacle last Saturday the most educated Wolfpackers that we know predicted that Wake Forest had the highest probability to trip up the Wolfpack in Raleigh. The Demon Deacons come to town Carter-Finley Stadium this weekend. Do you think the loss to Virginia was enough to snap the Wolfpack back into gear?

Snap us back into gear? We never were in gear.

Although not as many years as yourself (30 year fan myself) I can tell you I am more NUMB to Wolfpack football than ever. I certainly think a WF loss is a possibility. Honestly I think it is more likely than not. Adam must be on crack not to see the continuous decline in moral and passion in our team. More WTF play calling than I can remember in many years. Does that mean I don’t want us to win? NO. Does that mean I am so negative I just want to bitch? NO. Does it mean I don’t think we can improve? NO. Does it mean I think a change is needed with our current coaching staff? ABSOLUTELY YES!

Nothing will happen until the season is over and therefore I will support the team no matter what. However, at the end of the season (regardless if we go to another Tampax bowl or not) I have full expectation of a coaching change. Do it respectfully and professional as TOB deserves it. However, just get it done and let’s find someone who has a little motivation (and a good motivator themselves). We can do it! We don’t have to expect the top hire or miracles. Just someone that the players see as someone who plays to win and will take us to a little better spot then the current situation.

” Do you think the loss to Virginia was enough to snap the Wolfpack back into gear?”

    BACK into gear?………..

Like a lot of people on here, I strongly agree with the “brand” football that TOB touts. However, there are several things that make this team look fundamentally flawed at its core. Problems that seem not so sever at the sruface have manifested themselves deep in the entire program.

How do these mistakes keep coming back game in and game out? presnap penalties, balls getting thrown over the Ds head for massive gains, giving up sacks.SAFTIES, and giving up huge points in the first quarter…the list goes on.

How about the letdown games? Our relationship with UMD over the past 7 years alone is enough to fully illustrate this programs problems. Certain themes keep recurring one way or another that are largely inexplicable. 37 to 0 loss at UMD comes to mind, then the bedwetting that happened when we had the atlantic all but won, and a true fr QB ate us alive.

I am definitely not a football coach or involved with football in any professional capacity, but have played and been around the game since i was in 5th grade. Why no adjustments made?(coaching and in game?)

Why is there not a more (imaginative/wrinkle) scripted offensive game plan for the first drive of a game that doesn’t involve a dive play to the HB.

I do think its great that we have seen red helmets, black jerseys and some other alternate uniform combinations in the past couple years. That helps get teams hyped up and motivated. Those types of things would not typically be expected out of a TOBesque type of mentality. I wouldn’t have been surprised if TOB decided to stop putting names on jerseys when he first came to State.

So the reality I see is just like what everyone else sees; a suborn mentality, clinging on to a broken philosophy that must be tweaked.

What twists my head upside down, is how a rational thinking individual (TOB) does not come to the same conclusions that many of us have. The rational thinking in me also says “look, they are pros at what they do and know what they are doing”

But I also see the product on the field and the numbers in the stat book. I wonder if TOB will wake up and think that maybe shaking up the staff and upping the recruiting philosophy is a good idea or not? I like Tenuta, and TOB, but geez I’m definitely sure that I could do without Archer, and now I also wouldn’t mind seeing Bible going….and special teams? “we haven’t ever had the kid do a directional kick in practice” yeah, new special teams coach too….

If we had beaten Virginia, I’d say we could follow it up with a loss to Wake.

Since Virginia thoroughly embarrassed us, I think our chances of losing to Wake are virtually nil.

We have still played three good quarters of football this SEASON. Folks who have had, at any point this season, significant expectations have simply not been paying attention. To hell with the record – this team has been average to bad on the field for a vast majority of the minutes played this season.

“Do you think the loss to Virginia was enough to snap the Wolfpack back into gear?”

    Does it really matter?

If the coaches think that their jobs are on the line, we might see more effort.

I (almost) completely discount giving the loss to UNX any credit for what happened last week. As pointed out above we have not needed that prior to laying eggs one or more times in past seasons. This season we have been well on the way to laying them in all but 3 games. Lets face it luck is part of the game but we were lucky to come back and win the games we did. With FSU the stars aligned in converting 4th downs and they botched it (dropped 1 or 2 interceptions and dumb decisions on those last drives) letting us come back. And then there’s the “Doink” heard up and down the “Atlantic coast” too.

I’ve been in the coach’s camp up to the last 2 weeks, buying into past seasons injuries and other excuses. But this year it was supposed to be better. Well its not going to get better unless TOB finds a way to show some real emotion, active game management and creativity. Whats the chance of that?

    2 other last straw complaints:
    1) why is amerson still on the field ?- on Virginia’s first touchdown the QB dove from about the 3 yard line in front of a NCSU player who arrived, held up and did not even attempt to deliver a hit as the QB flew to the pylon.
Who was that? Ol’ # 1.

Is his draft value too high to bother with tackling?
Was he afraid of being penalized and giving up half the distance to the goal?

Bench his butt (and Tyson Chandler too). I bet someone on the depth chart is chewing the bit to get in the game. Give them the experience.

    2) When Manny Stocker is in the game why not turn him loose with the full playbook?

What did we have the lose in any of the games he’s been in?

His redshirt is burnt – why aren’t there some special plays designed to use him – option pass etc?

Makes no sense – and I don’t buy protecting him from getting hurt.

One last idea: Maybe Logan Winkles takes a handoff.

    Who cares? It’s basketball season.

  9. Smasher 11/07/2012 at 6:08 PM #

Last week I saw a team that never really showed up to play and then didn’t have any heart to make a game of it. That…is not encouraging. Couple that with what seems to be a team lacking in leadership and I think we are likely to put up another loss next week.

  10. ADVENTUROO 11/07/2012 at 7:16 PM #

There are probably OLDER fans than me, but I went to all the Home and several Away Games in 1963. I even went to the Freezer Bowl in Philly….and I think that I still have frostbite (How cold was it….It was SO cold that the band directors had to mix up special valve and slide oil with alcohol and glyceron as the stuff we had in the little bottles FROZE).

SO, I HOPED we would win on Saturday, but had a BAD feeling. That feeling was a carryover from the LOSS (yeah, it was a W) in MD when the Aussie kicker shanked it.

The UNC game was NOT unexpected. We DID have flashes of brilliance….but very short lived.

On Saturday against UVA, there were NO flashes….the UVA band played on every down, regardless of who had the ball and drowned out my old haunt, the Power Sound of the South.

If the UVA team shows….new coach. BUT, I STILL think that the FSU team MUST show and win decidedly in the next three season games and the bowl game. If the MD/UNC/UVA team shows up ONCE, there will be a high dollar condo for sale on Jones Street…

I ALSO remember the years when Coach Edwards would do a Quick Kick on 3rd Down…..now THAT, my friends, is historic…

    “Who cares? It’s basketball season.”

LOL…You’re just pissed because after Saturday, your new moniker could be way too appropriate. But I think we win Saturday, then drop the last two for a nice and balanced 6-6. Wow, talk about putrid. FSU should be freaking ashamed.

But I agree…screw it. Bring on the RedHawks.

And FWIW, I voted UVa in the poll, but it was a tough choice over Wake since they’ve taken our cookies and our lunch money on numerous occasions.

I graduated in 69 and so I am officially old. Had season tickets from 72 to 2011 and have donated huge sums to the WPC.

I, too, am amazed at coaches that can’t see the obvious. And AD’s that can’t coach the coaches.

Amato couldn’t keep an assistant and embarassed the University when he talked to the press. You could see his demise coming years in advance as his recruiting waned, coaches kept leaving, and he kept saying stupid things.

TOB hasn’t been able to moderize his approach, fire inept assistants, or improve his recruiting. Duh! I don’t think he has a grip on how football has changed and he hasn’t. He really thought we were going to be competitive this year with one of the slowest defenses in D1 ball and the most limited and predictable offense in the game, coupled with non-proven receivers that haven’t shown they can catch a ball consistently.

It is time to try again for a Wolfpack coach. We will get a smart, innovative, recruiting fool that can motivate and manage one day. And at this point in Wolfpack history, I think we are smart enought to pay to keep one if we find a good one. It is way too expensive to let a really good one go for a few mil a year.

I’ll be pulling for my Wolfpack but honestly, I don’t see us wining another game. I hope I’m just so dissappointed in last Saturday’s performance that I can’t imagine us looking good enough to win. I’ve been going to games since 1972 and have never seen a performance like the one last Saturdy. Go Pack!!!!

  14. mak4dpak 11/07/2012 at 7:52 PM #

I can’t remember ever having the feeling of not even caring if I make the game against Wake. Saturday. So not me, with love for college football. But that is my feeling. Went to Maryland, and watched us win by a missed easy FG, then to UNC, where we just sat on a 10 point lead, and then instead of attempting to get in FG range in the closing minutes, we choose to go for OT. Gio said no to that. Then we still have an outside chance of winning the division, we stink it up at home against a dismal UVA team. Who knows who will show up Saturday, looking less likely I will waste the time. I hope Debbie is working on our future, without TOB.

    We won’t win.
    Wake beats Wake.

  16. saigonwolf 11/07/2012 at 8:34 PM #

If we lose Saturday, TOB has definitely lost the team and should be let go at the end of the season – same as CTC was. If we win? – well, let’s just see what happens. I don’t have much confidence in anything right now. I don’t really get into basketball until football regular season is over, but that’s probably because for the past 20+ years, we haven’t had much to look forward to. Maybe after Friday night (and probably Saturday afternoon), I’ll be ready for some basketball.

We’ll be out of town this weekend, and THANKFULLY, I was able to sell my tickets to the game before the epic disaster vs UVa.

    Whew !

At least I don’t have to pay someone to take the tix off my hands !

Doesn’t matter what we do this weekend. Clemson will absolutely destroy this team (I would say ’embarrass’ but I don’t think they care enough to get embarrassed), so it really won’t matter.

Can you imagine the bed wetting that will go on if these guys are backed into a corner where they have to beat BC to get bowl-eligible ??? Dana Bible will need Depends in the booth…

  19. Deacon Blues 11/07/2012 at 10:37 PM #

Wuf- the boys win and I will change it back.

The way they played last week, there should have been an “all of the above choice”.

The boys are too good to play that bad, but I fear they have given up on the coaches, or worse, themselves.

“One last idea: Maybe Logan Winkles takes a handoff.”

Exactly, WuffDad. If for no other reason than throwing the yard dog a bone every once in a while. Winkles is the one guy who shows the most passion for the grittiest work…more please….and he a reliable option on short passes (unlike, well, everyone else).

  21. sjmac11 11/08/2012 at 6:58 AM #

I’ve said this here and I’ll say it again, stay at home, stay at your tailgate, do anything BUT enter Carter Finley Saturday. Want to make a STATEment???? Stay the hell at home, let TOB and Yow see a bunch of empty seats. The powers that be don’t read our little blogs, don’t hear our complaints but sure as hell will notice an empty stadium and honestly, that’s what this team deserves. Let’s be “real” about it

  22. NCSU84 11/08/2012 at 8:15 AM #

Come on people. You knew TOB would have a WTF game. Now that it is out of his system, we will go on to win at least two of the remaining games. I/We have been down this road too many times and know what to expect – a 7-5 or 8-4 season at best.

  23. eas 11/08/2012 at 8:18 AM #

Exactly. Same story every year with TOB

  24. Wulfpack 11/08/2012 at 8:57 AM #
