Coaching Update (Wed 2:45PM)

Not a lot of new coaching updates today.

We know that the Board of Trustees has a scheduled conference call today at 4:30 PM to discuss parameters of an employment contract. And we know Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes was “interviewing” for the job this morning (here), or perhaps even yesterday.

Another name SFN sources have confirmed as a candidate, and one being discussed on the SFN Forums, is 43-year old wunderkind Clemson Offensive Coordinator Chad Morris.

Only three years ago the Edgewood, TX native and Texas A&M alum was the head coach at Lake Travis (TX) high school, and in 2010 was the OC at Tulsa, but he has quickly become one of the hottest names in coaching because of the potent offense he runs at Clemson. And he’s been given, by some, much of the credit for Clemson’s recent success, which is why he’s the highest-paid assistant in college football ($1.3 million annually).

Chad Morris Biography (ClemsonTigers.com).

More to come.

Tigernet has a lot of posts about Morris coming to NCSU to interview today. Morris confirmed that HE has not spoke to NCSU – didn’t say anything about his agent though. I think Morris would be a better fit than Dykes based on the fact that he knows the ACC and will come in with something to prove, but, again, we’re talking about an offensive coach. DOES ANYONE COACH DEFENSE ANYMORE?????!!!!!!!!! The reason the SEC is so dominant is because they actually play defense.

I think Dykes would be setting our sights too low. He’s a TOB in Bulldog’s clothing. I would like to think that DY had her sights set a little higher when she fired TOB. On paper TOB and Dykes are almost identical over the past three years. This would be a lateral move in my opinion.

TWolf78, I agree. Morris would be a much better fit. I like the Morris/Tenuta combination myself. Our defense was almost non-existent this year and that HAS to change if we are going to even think about competing for an ACC title or top 25 spot.

It’s like waiting for Christmas…they can’t announce it fast enough.

I like Dykes more than Morris because he’s actually led a college program.

  6. coach13 11/28/2012 at 4:03 PM #

I thought it absurd initially but I could see Tenuta taking over as DC for whatever offensive genius we get, in fact I could see that detail worked out IF the new OC was willing.

Defense is won in recruiting. If Clemson has Clowney, instead of Cocks, they win the game.

If our defense has Mario Williams, Tank Tyler, McCargo, Tulloch, etc….. we only have 1 or 2 losses this season.

  8. packalum44 11/28/2012 at 4:08 PM #

I don’t know that I want Tenuta to stick around. He was calling the plays this year was he not?!

Why else did he sit in the booth while Archer roamed the sidelines aimlessly relaying the plays to the defense?

I don’t care who knows, or doesn’t know, the ACC. Knowing the ACC isn’t worth a hill of beans, otherwise, Mike O’Cain wouldn’t be an overrated QB coach at VT.

What the coach needs to know is football, how to coach it, how to recruit it.

“If our defense has Mario Williams, Tank Tyler, McCargo, Tulloch, etc….. we only have 1 or 2 losses this season.”

We had a team with those 4 players, etc, in 2004. We lost 6 games.

  11. Wulfpack 11/28/2012 at 4:24 PM #

The SEC is so dominant because they get the best players.

I just realized we are slated to play La Tech next year… will our coach be playing his former team?

  13. PackMan97 11/28/2012 at 4:35 PM #

At the end of the day there is a LOT more talent out there for offense. The best high school players are on offense because if you have one guy that’s great…do you want him with the ball in his hands where he can score…or do you want him on defense where he is just one of 11 and can’t cover the entire field?

So, while folks complain about defense the truth is there is a LOT more talent on offense than on defense and unless you are ‘Bama, LSU or one of the other royal programs you can only get so much talent so you get it on offense.

Most folks saw this on WRAL, but for the posters here….WRAL had Cullen B. and Jeff Gravely plus others (Mandy?) at Holaday Hall and had live shot set up. They were on the air and Mandy and others were inside the halls. The BOT Emergency Meeting broke up. BOT approved TOB buyout. Debbie Yow on call, but is in Atlanta “interviewing”. Only two folks mentioned. Dykes and Morris. Dr. Woodson said that the BOT approved the guidelines that she requested and gave her green light. He said that she did NOT tell him or them WHO the candidates are.

Jeff texted her (as he has been doing all day). He asked if she had a specific name or target in mind? She said YES and she was going after him now.

So, I guess we watch the stack on the Belltower and see when we have a coach. Don’t know if the color will tell us. Maybe Red for Dykes (as we always shout RED and he was the first on the rumor) or White for Morris.

Don’t know if Tony Haynes will interrupt the Gottfried show tonight if an announcement has been made.

Stay tuned…..a commentor from another site said that even the Amedeo’s Parking Lot network did NOT know who it will be.

Obviously, this is NOT gonna be another BB HC hire drill. This lady is TOUGH. Don’t know who or how the new guy will work out, but she is NOT going to be without options.

Based on Dykes contract, his base is $700K. The extra $60K was a performance bonus.

    @ foose

We also had Jay Davis behind center…

When we got serious enough about basketball we went to Hoosier State to start a dynasty- should it just be a coincidence that we target the Lone Star State for the right guy to build something?

I don’t know much about football coaching. But, prior to knowing he would be a candidate, I was impressed with Morris’ enthusiasm and interaction with players during the game.

  18. eas 11/28/2012 at 6:27 PM #

Morris has great interaction with his players. He seems to have a lot of excitement and I just like to hear him talk. I can’t help it, he has the “southern” ball coach charm. They are both from Texas but Morris is like a twin version of Dabo which seems to work well.

I will be happy no matter what but I am kind of partial to Morris.

  19. jbhwuf 11/28/2012 at 6:41 PM #

I believe that Morris is a great coach and that he has been fortunate to have some of the best speed and offensive firepower at his disposal since arriving at Clemson! Sammy Watkins, Boyd, Hopkins, Bryant, and Ellington would make anybody look like a genius…

  20. Wulfpack 11/28/2012 at 7:00 PM #

I think both would be very solid hires, but Morris has proved it in the ACC. No question that with the right guys in place he can get it done. Who will be best a getting those players?

  21. PackPearl 11/28/2012 at 7:11 PM #

TWolf, they sure don’t coach defense at klempson. Plus I don’t want to watch a spread offense. That’s high school SH!T. I’ll say it again…Dave Doeren.

She’s in Atlanta? Didn’t Petrino coach in Atlanta? Not that I want him…but it would be interesting. Glad we have Debbie and not Fowlup running things. So glad.

  23. JSRy2k 11/28/2012 at 7:40 PM #

    I would worry about…
    – Morris’ ability to assemble and manage a staff
    – Dykes’ ability to recruit

  24. Wulfpack 11/28/2012 at 7:50 PM #

The search firm is located in Atlanta, not that it should matter.

The same things were said about Dabo a few years ago. We have seen how that has turned out. And make no mistake Morris is Dabo’s crown jewel. This move would weaken Clemson considerably.

  25. Pacobee 11/28/2012 at 7:57 PM #

Dabo is getting ready to cry…if we don’t take Morris…someone will
