The State of State!!!

It is the day before the State-Carolina game…and, we’ll be having a lot more hit the blog regarding the game in the coming hours. In the meantime, we’ve got non-stop conversation going on over on our message forums – linked here – for anyone searching for more.

On the ‘heels’ of this great entry from earlier the week that we hope you’ve taken the time to read, then it couldn’t be a better time to share some fantastic news about NC State that I think you will find of significant interest.

I wanted to draw your attention to Chancellor Randy Woodson’s ‘impassioned’ “State of State” speech that he delivered earlier in the week.

The chancellor highlighted a number of firsts for the university within the last year, including:

>> The strongest incoming freshman class in NC State’s 125-year history this fall, with average SATs over 1,200 and weighted GPAs over 4.3.

>> NC State became the only university in the nation leading two active National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, with the announcement of an $18 million NSF grant in September.

>> $380 million in research activities last year, despite a shrinking pool of competitive research grants, which “makes NC State among the most productive research universities in the nation,” Woodson said.

>>NC State received the highest federal award for community service, the Presidential Award, as part of the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

>>Best year for giving in school history, including the addition of 3,000 new donors – which makes NC State the nation’s leader in attracting new donors, according to a survey of the nation’s 60 best public and private universities.

I watched Dr. Woodson’s wonderful speech yesterday. What leadership! It certainly made me a proud(er) alum with great confidence in the future of NCSU! Kudos to ALL in the administration, faculty and student body who contributed to those many achievements. Keep up the great work! This IS our STATE!!

whenever i see that logo, i’m reminded of my very first NCSU sweatshirt (white with that logo in red on the front) from around 1970.

Other things that will positively affect our national ranking include:

Aggressively controlling the universities student growth. By limiting the number of students we will improve our selectivity metric as we accept fewer students vs the growing number of applicants.

Opening of the Hunt Library. Will add to our library square footage and seats per student. The buzz surrounding this facility will also make waves in academic circles.

Growing donations. In the last 12 months we’ve had a $40M and a $10M donation by themselves. That’s routine for Ivy League schools but not so much for public land grants. Need that sort of thing to continue.

Don’t know when it will happen but I believe we will obtain AAU membership in the next 3-5 years. That designation will send us up the rankings by itself.

I’m sure there are more accolades that I’m not thinking of. Point is, feels like our university is about to bloom as an institution, even in this climate of shrinking budgets from the legislature. I believe we’re a far better institution than our recent rankings indicate. Woodson understands how this game is played, as well as the value of branding. He will work to systematically move us forward and upward.

After that entry the other night to the blog I mentioned that it inspired to me to write Dr. Woodson thanking him for his work. Just thought that I’d share with you all that he emailed me back at nearly 10 pm. That, by itself, says so much about him in my opinion.

I mentioned to him that when I got to NC State in ’04 that I knew that it was a good school but it certainly didn’t feel like we were going forward very fast. Since he has come in it is amazing the difference. It finally feels like we have the leadership with the drive and capability to take us from a good university to a GREAT university in all aspects.

I tip my hat to you Dr. Woodson. Thank you.

One thing maybe not mentioned in Dr. Woodson’s speech was that the company I work for (a Fortune 500 Chemical Company) just chose State for a $10M collaborative research effort located on the Centennial Campus. They chose State for its commitment and ability to work with industry. State was the pick over schools like Purdue, UT-Austin, VaTech and, yes, even UNX!
