O’Brien plays for overtime, risks losing his job

I’m not even going to complain about the two different holding calls on the return that would’ve negated the run.

We deserve to lose when we called such an AWFUL game after getting up ten points in the second half.

I was at the game. Plenty of blame to go around. A missed makeable field goal. Double digit passes dropped with no contact, one causing an interception. A player leaving the ball on the ground as he is tackled.

But make no mistake. Coaching contributed significantly to this loss–in a variety of ways.

I stick with what I said after the Miami game. I’m done with this coaching staff. I trust that they will be gone after the season. I trust that A.D. Yow will find us some new coaches who can field a team that looks better than ours does now. At worst (Miami) we are awful. At best, we are good. Most of the time we are mediocre to decent. After 6 years of building a program, with his strongest, deepest, most experienced team to date, this, THIS, is all TOB can show for it?!

Playing for OT was disappointing to see at the end of the game. TOB knew that the holes had all three TOs as did we, we should have called a TO got a good play setup, and let the ball fly. Glennon had TD passes of 83 and 55 yards, for gosh sakes. Let’s live a little dangerous for once, and put it all on the line. If he is fired, then we need to break the bank on Charlie Strong before the old ball coach retires, and he takes over at the fake carolina.

I can’t remember the teams, but a similar situation happened in the NFL last year, with a punt return winning the game. There was similar disgust at the punter not being able to punt it away from the returner. Pretty sure it was Chris Kluwe (interesting guy on Twitter) that explained how difficult it is in that split second to make a good directional kick. So I don’t put it on the punt. But playing not to lose is pretty unacceptable. I have always been more interested in basketball than football, but this year, the football team pulled me into this rollercoaster ride. I think I just need to go back to basketball, as we’ve had too many years of this. I think we go 7-5.

If there is a light at the end of tunnel, we have to win the rest of our games, and hope that VT will continue to win at home, thus beating FSU. Then we get to go to the ACC Championship. But it will never happen if we continue with our play not to lose mentality, when we have a lead in a game. The coaches have to keep the foot on the accelerator. But getting Bible to do that will be difficult. He just doesn’t get it.

The 2002 game against UNX is in the Vault on theACC.com, what a great game that one was…

NC State will not win the ACC until it can rush the football like that team could.

That was my great hope when O’Brien was hired, that he could make our offense truly balanced, which has not happened.

At the end of the day, while his teams still disappoint at crucial times we are better than we were when O’Brien was hired, which is nice. After 2006, us fans were DREAMING of 8-9 wins and a bowl, which is what we have.

I say let TOB finish his contract (however long it is, 2015 I heard?) and then go fishing for a new coach.

We could have it MUCH worse.

This coaching staff is equivalent to someone driving 35mph in 55mph with a no passing lane. They eventually get to where they are going but in a timely fashion. They also piss everyone off while they are trying to get there.

I am sorry but I have not seem a motivated/excited team on the field since CTC. Please understand I am ONLY talking about excitement here and not coaching ability. However, truthfully they aren’t to far apart really. One difference is CTC could not keep a good coach on staff and was not organized. TOB is organized but cannot get RID of bad coaches. Essentially it equals nearly the same outcome. I am sure someone will chime in and say TOB is so much better than CTC and our program is much better off now (which is pretty much true as a whole and would agree to). But the truth remains there is not much forward movement from year 1-5 on TOB’s teams. You have to recruit well, prepare well for games, make proper adjustments and play aggressive in today’s football world. None of those attributes are strong points of TOB and Co.

Why is everyone so sure next year will be horrible? Is it because Glennon is leaving? I understand that the QB transfer from CO State who had t sit out this year is really good. So, what makes us vulnerable next year?

  8. old13 10/28/2012 at 10:45 AM #

^ DB turnover; QB unknowns; LB questions; OL mostly gone; consistently slow starts – games and seasons; consistently poor in-game coaching; mediocre recruiting; etc.

  9. Alpha Wolf 10/28/2012 at 11:12 AM #

You may no like chuck, but he could recruit.

He didn’t recruit offensive linemen, and Jay Davis and Marcus Stone payed for it. And as anyone who really knows football will tell you, the quality of teams is often determined on the lines.

  10. wolfpack95 10/28/2012 at 11:33 AM #

    Same shit; different game.
I went to douchebag hill for the game, and I think that we all knew that TOB was going to call running plays on the last series to try to force the OT; I also think that we expected our team to lose. After 2 straight quarters where UNC fans and their team were dormant, momentum was clearly on UNC’s side. We pissed away the 3rd quarter and could have put the game away, but the gutless wonder continues to demonstrate why he has NEVER and WILL NEVER win a championship.

I want TOB fired/retired/whatever PC term you would like to select. He will never push our program past where it currently sits. TOB righted the ship, but the rudder is stuck in the mud. We will beat 2 1AA teams per year to help us to get 7-8 wins, and a segment of our fans will nod and say that that is good enough.
It’s NOT good enough for me.
I will be at the rest of our home games for 2012, but if TOB is back in 2013, I will not be. I made that decision earlier this season. This is not internet puffing. Until NC State demonstrates that it is willing to make a football winner, this football program does not need my money.
I am a sub-2000 ranked donor in WPC (not touting my horn). I am not unique in my opinions. Yow understands what apathy among donors and ticket purchasers can do to an athletics program. Look at the results of financial atrophy that happened at UMd after Friedgen’s teams and Williams’s teams stagnated for many years.
Give TOB 1 – 3 more seasons. I guarantee that millions of dollars will be lost as fans tire of mediocre results and inconsistent play.

  11. BureauOfMines 10/28/2012 at 11:53 AM #

    Yeah, Pack1998.

“He may prove he can never move us beyond “slightly above average”, even with a team this year with 5-6 NFL players.”

He’s already proven that. And the staff before his proved it. Look at all the players we’ve sent to the NFL and the mediocre Win-Loss seasons. It’s a long established pattern.

  12. UpstateSCWolfpack 10/28/2012 at 12:10 PM #

Yes, but Chuck also didn’t care about what kind of person they were off the field, he only cared about talent. As much as I want to win the ACC and a BCS bowl game, I don’t want guys like Greene to be a Wolfpack member. We need to keep recruiting good citizens, but also talented athletes.

  13. Bill Price 10/28/2012 at 12:20 PM #

Absolute stupid coaching!!! Need to come to the game with more than a big mouth! Players could not catch a cold, even my wife who knows little about the game said stupid calls. At least we have the 3 timeouts!! GO Obrien, Please go!!!!

  14. eas 10/28/2012 at 12:33 PM #

We can recruit both good kids and good players. It is done at MANY schools around the NCAA. Apparently that is not an option NCSU because we have either/or. That is BS! Hire a coach that can do both, it really isn’t that difficult if you look around the leagues.

  15. Tuffy2 10/28/2012 at 12:58 PM #

Jay Davis and Marcus Stone were not as good as their ink said they were no matter what kind of offensive line we had. Stone was great in High School but how many times do players not make the transition to the next level? Many times over but he did become a decent to very good TE.

Get the hell off of CTC back people for once and for all. Some of you would not even be able to go see the pack at CF Stadium because there would not be enough seats to sit your bottoms if it was not for him. Just keep looking at the negatives about the man just like some of you did with V back in the day.

  16. TeufelWolf 10/28/2012 at 1:03 PM #

Speaking of Greene, what happened? I know TOB said he wasn’t a “champion” in the classroom but what does that mean?

Also, I don’t understand the “but at least they are good people” mentality. The goal is to win games; albeit with “good citizens” but win nonetheless. Plenty of other schools recruit students who follow the rules AND win games. We can too

  17. Hungwolf 10/28/2012 at 1:07 PM #

TOB won 5 out of 6 vs UNC. One loss is a close game on the road. We still looking at a good season with the home games left. ACC did us no favors with schedule this year. I don’t see how in any way shape or form TOB’s job is in jeopardy. He still got my support, some of you just way off base and unrealistic in my view. We looking at another bowl game this year and that is getting to be a habit. I think that is the first step of our program is to be a consistent bowl team and then build from there.

  18. eas 10/28/2012 at 1:33 PM #

I agree CTC did a lot for this school and his time here greatly improved the facilities. He had some management issues he never could grasp but he loved the school and gave his all every time he set foot on the field. He was an excellent recruiter but never could get things organized on and off the field. I do miss his passion for the game and school though!

  19. RedRiver 10/28/2012 at 1:48 PM #

Ok, here’s what really chaps my cheeks. A minute and a half left , all three time outs, tie game, we have the ball. Give or take a bit the odds are 50-50 we make the plays and move the ball down field for a chance to win the game. They have to play for the stop and hope they can get the ball back. Without the ball, their odds of scoring and winning in regulation are 0%. Piss poor decision making is what lost this game. Play calling aside, the decision to play to hold for the win in the 4th qtr, and ultimately the decision to play for OT gave them the opportunity to play for the win.
I like what I know of Coach O’Brien. He runs a clean program and he does develop players that might otherwise get overlooked. Like HWSNBN, he was brought in to right a troubled program. Obviously there are a lot of fans who want to move our program to the next level. To do that, either he needs to find some assistants who can recruit and/or coach to that level, or we need a head coach who can do those things

kicking the ball to the best player on the UNC team. Why??? kick the ball out of bounds by all means

  21. Tuffy2 10/28/2012 at 2:08 PM #

Nobody’s way off base here on SFN. If your happy that is fine but most of us want more after 6 years. I myself do not think of going to Wal-Mart bowls year in and year out is progress. Do you even know how many bowls are out there? The question is, do you want what 2 other teams in the ACC want each year or are you satisfied with this? If we can beat these teams like we have when we play them then I believe winning the ACC is attainable with this football program.
I know we do not dominate FSU but look back. Since 1996, Florida State has alternated its won/loss result at NC State. The Seminoles won in ‘96, lost in ‘98, won in 2000, lost in 2002, won in 2004, lost in 2006, won in 2008 and lost in 2010 and lost in 2012. Clemson has been a different story as we are 5-9 over the last 14 years but we beat them last year and lost to them over there by 1 point the year before. My point is we should be doing more and if he could recruit we would.

  22. Wulfpack 10/28/2012 at 2:42 PM #

The ACC has 9 bowl tie-ins. There won’t be that many eligible teams this year as the conference blows. UNC are cheaters. BC and UVA are horrendous. Wake is not good. Maryland sucks, too, as does Georgia Tech.

The point is it is no longer much of an accomplishment to go to a bowl game. It is akin to making a postseason tournament in hoops. Big deal. You suck if you don’t. You load up on directional schools in the non-conference slate and hope you can win 4 or 5 conference games. So your most average teams in conference, at 4-4, can go bowling so long as they beat the South Alabamas of the world. Sorry, but this just does not whet my whistle. The system is built for the TOBs of the world where everybody gets a trophy.

^^^^^Hungwolf: we will know a lot more at the end of the season…..TOB contract runs out at end of the season next year. If he is on safe ground then he gets an extension and if not he goes to the beach next year. Thus far Dr. Yow has had some strict guidelines for coaches and has successfully replaced those that did not meet her standards. We shall see …….

  24. jpack 10/28/2012 at 2:57 PM #

The staff could learn something by watching how the Panthers have dealt with Hester today.

    GrayWolf,
“Hungwolf: we will know a lot more at the end of the season…..TOB contract runs out at end of the season next year. If he is on safe ground then he gets an extension and if not he goes to the beach next year”

I thought you were correct as I have TOB’s ORIGINAL contract (PDF). Turns out AD Fowler did a TWO YEAR extension in 2009.

    Here is the N&O Reference.

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/12/24/1731191/road-of-ups-and-downs.html

I ASSUME that the N&O is correct, so AD Yow now has a more STICKY Wickett to deal with. Pulling the pin on him this year would cost us upwards of $5 MILLION. I don’t think she has that much cash surplus. Besides, except for a few games, we are mainly sold out. The BC game is light this year, but the timing on T-Day Sat and students being gone explain that.

SO….I’ll bet we stay with him through 2014….

If I am INCORRECT, then please post the reference.

Totally different dynamics with THREE more years….
