‘BIG’ recruiting news breaking Wolfpack’s way?

NC State Basketball has been on “commitment watch” the last few days as all indications had been that highly rated post prospects Beejay Anya and Dominic Woodson might announce their college decisions this week. Our message forums have been a great place to follow recruiting in real time. You can click here for the most recent thread discussing Anya (and some on Woodson) during his visit this past weekend.

Heading into this week it was widely reported that Anya had narrowed his list to NC State and Indiana and Woodson had narrowed his list to NC State and Baylor.

While we’ve been waiting for each high school star to make his college choice known, news has broken this morning that Indiana has pulled their offer to Anya and are focusing on Noah Vonleh who is not an NC State target. (Link) Schools/coaches will often leak this kind of information to the public after they’ve been told that they will not be getting a commitment so that it doesn’t look like they were turned down. Regardless of what has happened with Anya, NC State appears to be sitting exceptionally strong here at decision time. (Read more under the quote)

And, to the exact point just referenced in the aforementioned paragraph — it appears that NC State is no longer involved with Dominic Woodson. πŸ™‚

According to Evan Daniels, the national basketball recruiting analyst for FOXSports.com, Indiana has stopped recruiting Class of 2013 center BeeJay Anya in order to focus on forward Noah Vonleh.

There could be a big trickle-down effect on the Triangle.

Anya, a 6-foot-9, 275-pound senior at DeMatha, recently narrowed his recruiting list to Indiana and N.C. State. ESPN ranks him as the 31st-best player in the Class of 2013, and he visited Raleigh last weekend. The Wolfpack is also recruiting big men Dominic Woodson and Kennedy Meeks, although North Carolina and Georgetown are considered the frontrunners for Meeks. Woodson has narrowed his list to N.C. State and Baylor.

If Indiana is able to land Vonleh, a 6-8 forward ranked as the No. 8 senior by ESPN.com, that’d be a blow to the Tar Heels. They are pursuing Vonleh and top-ranked Andrew Wiggins, a small forward who will likely end up at Kentucky or Florida State, according to many recruiting experts.

If State does ultimately land Anya to pair with Kyle Washington in the post the situation continues to set itself up extremely nicely for Top-3 rated prospect, Julius Randle to fit exceptionally nicely into the Wolfpack’s roster and rolling scholarship spacing.

If it helps with Randle it will be because he could make a big splash and tilt the recruiting landscape taking our already strong class to a top 5 class. It also helps because while there is room for him to play right away, it will show him that we have the pieces in place to contend right away. I think that is probably very important for him.

“old13, PI is reporting that Randle is down to six schools.”

This is what was posted today on the PI board:

Reports from pack insider say Texas and NCSU leading the way for Randle right now !!

Per a @PackInsider source, Texas and NC State are the clubhouse leaders to land the #2 ranked 2013 prospect Julius Randle.”

Looks like a two-horse race to me!

Randle can play either the 3 or 4, as well as anyone in the country. He’ll start anywhere he goes. I think it helps we land a beast at the 5.

Our starters would be young. But could be:

    Cat
    Purvis
    Warren
    Randle
    BeeJay

Would be a Kentucky type of team. As talented as any in the country, but young.

    Off the bench:
    Tyler Lewis
    Kyle Washington
    Ralston Turner
    De Thaey
    Vandy

I must give Sidney Lowe his praise. God bless him but Lowe could not coach his way out of a paper bag. Lowe could recruit. Last years run was all Sidney Lowe players. This year will be mostly Lowe players. Without that foundation Gott would have never ever had the success this early on. Gott is taking that success and making it pay dividends. Lowe will forever and always be part of the family, despite what happened. Somebody, whose name we will not mention, should have looked closer into the situation before making the hire.

Is anybody hearing what the TIMELINES are for any big commitments? Or just that we’re looking good for some of these kids?

    Thank you Tucker!

I have been saying that Sid had a great impact on this program for a long time. He educated a new group of youngsters as to what NCSU was and will be agian. Without his love for this university and work on the recruiting trail we would be nowhere close to where we are today.

He was not the coach to take us there but he was the one to get us started.

    We love you Sid.

old13, I hope you’re right. I was referring to the official article at PI. I consider that “reporting”, but I don’t give as much credibility to a blog post. That dude might have just read the article wrong.

    But again, I hope you’re right! πŸ™‚

NC State can recruit itself. Lowe was reportedly lazy and sketchy with recruiting. Lets not forget degand. Javi. Mays. Johnny Thomas. Josh Davis.

In five years Lowe had one top 10 class he underachieved and was sporadic in recruiting.

  10. TruthBKnown Returns 10/31/2012 at 6:41 PM #

I believe Josh Davis could have been the role player that every championship caliber team needs. I really wish he had stayed.

But your point is well taken. Sid did bring in a few good recruits, though. We need to give him credit for that, even if it was just a flash in the pan. I don’t think anyone believes we should have kept Sid any longer just because he brought in a few good players.

Word is that Anya will announce at some school BB function on November 16. Don’t know how accurate the info is. Randle is rumored to be a spring commit. But, of course, that could advance.

Thanks, 13. I was wondering if tomorrow was going to be one of those Press-F5-all-day-long kind of days. πŸ™‚

    Mista,
Probably the best bball article I have read in 25 years. These are good times… I will soak it all in.

That link (good article!) is intended for mobile devices. This link (same article) is a little easier on the eyes if you’re using a computer.

I saw the ESPNU segment on this earlier tonight. Great face time for coach Gott.

As Jim Harrick says, it’s not the only offensive system, just the best.

Also similar to what the Lakers ran under Jackson.

Absolutely loving the press the Pack is getting. But I’m hoping the coaching staff is pumping the you-know-what out of the brakes to keep egos in check. Press is good, but there’s lots of work to be done. GO WOLFPACK!

The ESPN article is great. I particularly appreciated DT’s comments about Wolfpack pride – and he’s absolutely correct!
