Volmageddon – Why It’s So Emotionally Devastating

After a full night’s sleep…it doesn’t feel one bit better. Last night was an unmitigated disaster. The opportunity the game presented (to make a statement on the national stage) will not be repeated. Even if we win the ACC – admittedly a laughable notion right now – we will just be the new sacrificial lamb put up for January slaughter. A feeble reminder of why the college football world can’t wait to be rid of the BCS.

We can’t even judge what kind of team we really have. The massive suck from Glennon and Amerson means that we don’t really know anything about the other 20 guys. If the unquestioned offensive and defensive leaders get their heads straight…will the guys in the trenches become the fatal flaw? We can have no idea.

No matter what, NC State had a big opportunity, against a name program that we matched up well with – on paper. And we absolutely embarrassed ourselves. The final score could have been oh so much worse. The way the roster is set up, this was the perfect year to face such an opening night test. In short, we had the ideal setup, and we didn’t even come close to taking advantage. Plain and simple, that is extraordinarily disheartening. It will be a long damned time before most of us can generate any enthusiasm for our football program. Mild amusement and interest is all we have left.

For me, this is problematic at a macro level. I genuinely believe that our limitations as a team in a pedestrian conference, with a natural recruiting base that’s average and significantly overfished…the Dick Sheridan/Tom O’Brien model is the only way for us to succeed. And despite being even more accomplished than Sheridan…Tom O’Brien couldn’t replicate even that ceiling, let alone break through. It’s very likely that our next coach will be worse, or immediately leave for greener pastures. NC State is simply not a legitimate player in the college football world, and it will take lightning in a bottle for it ever to be, even on a limited, temporary basis.

Might be time for DY to put on the heat. UNC wins big today, let’s just hope Elon is that bad.

Hmm.. Call me delusional, but I thought that was a game we were going to win. I’m not a betting man, but I told several people that I’d have taken State with the line and the over.

I watched Tennessee last year. They were flat out inept, went 1-7 in the SEC and couldn’t stop anyone. We improved steadily last year, and really only had one questionable position (LBs).

This is the kind of game that NC State and the ACC really needed to win. Win this one, and the rest of the schedule is legitimized. Lose it (like we did last night) and all of our results this year are effectively marked with an asterisk.

We blew it. It really came down to a handful of things:
    1) Tough one minute stretch in the first quarter where we completely melted down. TOB’s teams are typically tough mentally, but we didn’t show that last night.

    2) Our OL couldn’t protect Glennon. He got knocked down, hurried and had the ball knocked loose. I think the INTs (outside of the first) were largely due to the pressure.

    3) No pressure on their QB: I think we may have knocked down Bray about 3 times. Switch the two QBs out, but keep everything else the same and I suspect the results would have been about the same.

    4) Big plays: Until we fell two scores down, we really were controlling the game, but were losing the big plays. I couldn’t help but remember the irony of NC State/BC with Daniel Evans……..

    5) Recruiting: UT was bigger and faster. I thought our conditioning actually looked pretty good, but UT just had way better athletes. You can’t coach speed.

Oh well, we’ll beat UConn and go 3-1 non conference. Then we’ll lose to Clemson and FSU and have one other WTF loss in the ACC. That will leave us at 8-4.

Maybe we should have worn orange. That color took both games. Congrats to Clemson, for some ACC pride.

Everyone keeps talking like a UConn win is a given but I don’t think any win is a given with this staff. Don’t underestimate their ability to not have a team ready to play. Every year under TOB we lose games we should (on paper) win, especially early on. They won 37-0 this week and we got embarrassed.

  6. Tuffy2 09/01/2012 at 10:20 PM #

The as long as we beat unc State fan has accepted the little success this football program has given it. I truely believe it gets them through the year. This will not be admitted by those folks for the most part.

I am sure all successful program team message boards would not dare to have any negative statements put on there sights as it could be harmfull and destroy their programs. PLEASE!!

As far as Russell Wilson goes, if he stays we lose Glennon I am very aware of this. looking at the big picture have always felt that with all the attention this program would had received the long range benefits would outway the good year we are suppose to have this year. But then I remembered TOB would dwarf the talent and it would be a wash anyway.

If you want something bad enough( Im speaking to the university) the football program could be top 15-25 every year.

I’m beginning to think that maybe I’m just not “fanatical” enough to be a regular contributor here.

I, like many others, bought into a little bit of the enthusiasm and optimism leading into this year’s football program. I KNOW that we weren’t likely to be a Top 10 or Top 15 program early this year, but I was still optimistic. After a difficult game, against a tough SEC opponent, in which we obviously were outplayed, I am also disappointed. However, I refuse to immediately jump on the “Fire O’Brien” and “Dump Amerson” bandwagon that appears to be a staple of SOME of the SFN regulars.

Yeah, we’re frustrated. Believe me, I understand that. But if you think YOU are frustrated, you can’t even imagine what the players and coaching staff must feel. For goodness sake, try to be a little bit upbeat for a change. I’m not suggesting that we’re all happy about this, but ENOUGH with the wild, emotional compass swings every 7 days.

Sorry to vent, but given the state of my alma mater’s athletic programs over the past year, I think that the team deserves some support!

    Hey guys/gals,
Yes, I’m a Tennessee fan, been afflicted as a child to cheer them Win or Lose. The game last night was a little bit of Tennessee of old. We could easily have reverted to the 2011 team that could compete for a half and then get dominated in the 2nd half. I was worried about Bray throwing INTs the whole game, still surprised you guys never went to something to knock off timing. I’d say we won, based on the Wolfpack staying in a Zone. It allowed our big fast WR’s to get up to speed and left a fairly manageable window to make the throws. At least for Bray, rest assured, I doubt you guys face anyone like him again this season. There is no reason you guys can’t still Win the ACC. Some of the comments are right about the ACC vs SEC, Clemson beat an average Auburn team, not sure any other ACC team beat an SEC team. I fully expect the SEC to raid the ACC after this season or next. Fairly sure a 16 team league is in our Future. I wouldnt mind the Wolfpack in the SEC. Certainly might be my second Favorite team if that happens. In any case I’ll be rooting for you guys the rest of the season. I’ve lurked around Wolfpack sites for weeks now that I feel a bit invested as a fan. Good Luck

In the first quarter, when we were driving, and it was a fourth and short, and TOB signaled for a time out, I knew it was a mistake, I was yelling “NO, keep moving!”…next play was an interception; you have to know when to attack, and TOB chose the “normal” route…I knew we were screwed at that point.

  10. Wufpacker 09/02/2012 at 1:46 AM #

    @wolfpack_83,
I think you’ll find that most of the regulars around here are extremely supportive of NCSU athletics in just about every way imaginable.

But there is a tendency around here toward being realistic and to not blow sunshine. That’s pretty much what I like about our community here. Just like with friends or family, I’d much prefer someone tell me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear. Also, just like with family, it the kind of thing like “I can say that about my family, but if you do you’re toast”.

Also, though there is certainly an edge to this community, especially after a game like the UT game, there are a lot of great folks here who know what the hell they’re talking about. That does not mean you’ll agree with what everyone says, or even how they say it for that matter. But isn’t that more interesting?

Try not to judge too harshly based on in game or post game comments from Friday’s game. As tjfoose1 said on one of the forums threads, it’s like instant, interactive therapy. Also, you’ll see just as much positivity when it’s appropriate.

Admittedly, though, it’s not for everybody.

  11. mak4dpak 09/02/2012 at 4:13 AM #

Totally agree, we all support the team, but family does want what’s best. Doesn’t mean, it is what we wanna hear. We were given a chance to win a big game, with the national spotlight, and we blew it. Probably get another chance next week. So do we redeem ourselves? Guess we will know this time next week. I say trash the playbooks, and come up with something new! To be a champion you have to think like one, play like one, and coach like one. Get back up, when you get knocked down. We lack that mentality.

  12. SqlWolf 09/02/2012 at 6:16 AM #

“Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.” Alfred Pennyworth (Batman Begins)

It’s now time to pick ourselves up and go win the next game. I completely understand BJD’s sentiments but our boys can still become the team we imagined before game one. Winning a championship is still within our grasp.

I refuse to consider a change in coaching staff unless the team spirals completely out of control and that will just not happen. I’m willing to give TOB til the end of the season.

  13. tuckerdorm1983 09/02/2012 at 6:27 AM #

    Look it is about recruiting.

NC STATE team ranking football recruiting (scout.com)
    2008 29th
    2009 39th
    2010 47th
    2011 74th
    2012 61th

despite all the good things we do and how disciplined our team is without the athletes with speed and size we are going to be outplayed. Turning 2 and 3 star players into 4 and 5 star players is our motto. We saw what happened at Chapel Hill. At this point there are 3 teams much better than us in the ACC (FSU, CLEM, Va Tech).

  14. GAWolf 09/02/2012 at 6:54 AM #

While it’s obvious to everyone that we missed an opportunity to get a W against an SEC team to start the season, I’m hardly ready to throw in the towel.

Simply, I do not think this game is that big as to our immediate season. I do agree that this is indicative of where we are and where the conference is. We got punched in the mouth by a bigger, faster, SEC team. It was at least on a neutral field, thankfully.

The point for me is that this has nothing to do with our season’s primary goals. We all know there was no chance in hell we would go undefeated. I’d rather lose this game than any other game on our schedule… any of them.

We can still have an awesome season in NC State standards, and there is much to be excited about looking at this game.

We aren’t national champions, far from ACC champions, and likely not division champions. Let’s face reality before we launch ourselves off the cliff of over-hyped expectations. It would have been fantastic to win this game, and I have said on here before that it might likely be the biggest game in TOB’s tenure at State. We lost. We best pick it up elsewhere on the calendar, and preferable against a conference foe from the state of Florida.

  15. Wolfpack93 09/02/2012 at 7:55 AM #

Sure I hate to that we blew a prime opportunity for some national respect, but the fact is, that NC State performs terribly EVERY time they get that respect. The way I see it, the Wolfpack got some attention in the media — ESPN covered our training camp; Amerson had scouts checking him out during pre-game — and the players didn’t know how to deal with being in the spotlight. Maybe now, the football program can get their collective heads out of the stars and focus on improvement again.

At the end of the day, I’ll take a 14-point loss to a rebuilding SEC team over a 62-point win versus a FCS team that amounts to nothing more than a scrimmage. Which game tells you more about your program (for better or for worse)?

  16. TeufelWolf 09/02/2012 at 8:06 AM #

I think the what it boils down to for the ‘negative’ posters on here (myself included) is that the excitement for this year is now gone. We were hoping that this would be TOBs breakout year but it’s simply business as usual. If’ll be another .500ish year. The worst part is the recruiting has gotten worse because TOB seems to have one foot out the door. The next guy is going to have a huge uphill battle in his efforts to rebuild. The whole thing is just disappointing. BTW I would love for TOB to prove me wrong, go undefeated, win the ACC, get a new (short term) contract and start recruiting some talent.

  17. GAWolf 09/02/2012 at 8:27 AM #

It can still be a breakout year. We lost to an SEC school on a neutral field. Fortunately for us, it has no consequence on our quest to miraculously win an ACC with several teams obviously better than we are. If our players’ heads were in the stars, our fans’ heads were too.

  18. mak4dpak 09/02/2012 at 8:48 AM #

So clearly some of us accept we can’t and never will win a championship. Very sad! TOB accomplished this in BC, so what it the problem here. And regardless of our disappointment in the coaching staff, we all know our final judgement won’t be made til season’s end. No one is calling for an immediate firing. But they clearly need to step it up, because we can win a championship, but again we have to have the championship mentality. When we had our lapse in the UT game, and they scored two TDs in a short time. The players gave up, and it started showing. All mental. We had the talent to win, as we all can recall how we had that long drive down the field to score, and UT could not stop up us. We are not that far apart. Clemson won, and what did we do to them last year. Again it is clearly our mentality. But that is just my opinion.

  19. Wulfpack 09/02/2012 at 8:52 AM #

It wasn’t just us. A lot of media had us winning this game and taking that step. It didn’t happen. Can still have a good season. But my excitement level is definitely tempered. I just do not know how you don’t show more in that kind of game that you had a year to prepare for. Very disappointing.

And nobody is saying fire TOB. I am of the opinion that will not happen. If he stinks it up this year and DY comes calling, he will bow out gracefully. He is retirement age and most think he doesn’t have too much longer.

  20. PackCracker 09/02/2012 at 10:15 AM #

Returned to GA to take my 6 year old to his first State game. Like everybody else, greatly disappointed in the outcome. Our two strong points, Amerson and Glennon, didn’t play like veterans. But my biggest concern was why the defense seemed to regress to the season we had several years ago when we sucked. Corners off the WRs 10 yards. No defensive pressure. Almost back to the “let them catch it and try to stop them before they get a first down” of several years ago. And I’ve yet to ever understand our offense. Glennon was completing passes down the field on what I guess were seam routes. And maybe UT changed, but it just seemed like we abandoned it and went to that God awful 1 yard pass BS we always do. And I don’t know how we’re ever supposed to figure out which of our RBs is better when we let them run twice, get a rhythm, then pull them out for another guy.

With all that said, I’m with about half of the posters who don’t think the season is over. It made us look bad. And it means we won’t win a national championship, which hopefully wasn’t anybody’s hope, but doesn’t mean anything towards winning the division. And until we fail and blow that hope, I’ll wait to see what TOB can do.

Either way, I figure this was a good way to introduce my son to the frustration that comes with being a State fan. I think he had more fun riding MARTA, anyway.

  21. ChiefJoJo 09/02/2012 at 10:37 AM #

I like to think about this game in terms of whether the mistakes we made are correctable or not. Overall UT has better athletes, but I didn’t feel that was the difference in general–more the talents of a few key UT players rather than the whole team. The first TD was on Amerson, who was peaking into the backfield. The 2nd was a missed assignment–either he or Wolff didn’t know the coverage. The reverse was a combination of poor pursuit by our defense and a great individual effort by on of their best players. There’s 21 points.

We didn’t get blown off the ball or really outmatched physically as a whole, and again, if we limit mental errors on the big plays, it’s a completely different game. To me the biggest concern was the lack of consistent pressure on Bray. I recall one sack of Bray later on in the game after most of the damage was done, and little else. Bray is a great player but we made him look even better giving him all day to throw. Yes, UT’s OL is supposed to be good, but you just can’t let Bray pick you apart. This reflects poorly on our inability to recruit a pass rushing DE and no effective coaching adjustments during the game.

Last year we had quite a few sacks, through a combination of blitz packages, and if we can’t figure out a way to get some pressure on the QB, it doesn’t matter how well Amerson plays.

  22. rdjennin 09/02/2012 at 11:07 AM #

I’m so tired of that “we gotta pick ourselves up” crap. Sure I’m cool with that, but not every stinkin year for crying out loud.

  23. TeufelWolf 09/02/2012 at 12:11 PM #

I’m not generally pessimistic (you should have seen me on Friday afternoon) and I’ a huge Pack fan (heck, I’m wearing a #33 jersey right now. I am not a coach but I also follow the pack pretty close, even while deployed in Afghanistan for a year. I know all the names of all the players and enough stats and meaningless facts about the Pack to bore my wife to death….. We needed to win this game to prove that we had turned the corner with TOBs team (he recruited EVERY player on that roster) and that we were no longer a .500 team. However, not only did we not turn any corners, we took steps backwards: to recruits, to our fans (i.e. boosters), to national media, to local media. I enjoy optimism but thinking we lost by “one or two big plays” is ridiculous — that’s football by the way but that is beside the point. We lost in EVERY category of the game: OL, WR, RB, QB, DL, LB, Secondary, Special Teams, yards rushing, yds/rush, yards passing, yds/pass, first downs, 3rd down efficiency, turnovers, time of possession, ……… We lost in EVERY part of the game. That is difficult not to notice. We didn’t just lose by “a few big plays” we almost lost by about 14 more points.

Now just because I noticed these things doesn’t mean that I’m not a loyal fan. I will be cheering for the Pack as loud as anyone else for the rest of the year just as I have done all my life. But to accept these mediocre performances is unacceptable. Thankfully DY agrees or else I would have true anxiety. Call it what you will but unless TOB puts us in the ACC Championship this year (and ah, did you see Clemson last night? — yeah) then I believe he will ‘retire’ at the end of the year and I for one will continue to not be pessimistic about that change. We can take several steps to be nationally relevant and upgrading the coaching staff is perhaps the most obvious. TOB showed RW last year that no one is above the program. Well neither is he and the staff.
