How Do You Spell Ugly?

I dunno…but I definitely just saw it.

That said, I will very gladly take the win. Looking at the big picture, we played poorly two weeks in a row. On the road, against credible D-1 opponents. To emerge from that 1-1 is a very positive outcome.

That said again…NC State has tons of work to do if it wants to compete even in the ACC Atlantic Division this year. Clemson and Florida State would destroy last weekend’s Wolfpack – or today’s. The comic ineptitude of the rest of the schedule almost ensures a bowl bid…but this season needs to be about more than that. If not now, when? And we will be forced to ponder that awful “when?” line of questioning unless NC State gets a lot better by October 6.

Get better, Earl Wolff. We would be 0-2 without you.

Settle down, Mike Glennon. Even factoring in the inconsistent OL play, you get no better than a C-minus so far in your senior campaign.

One last word – I still think it was smart to stay conservative on offense down the stretch. I think we were much more likely to shoot ourselves in the foot (especially against the wind) than deliver the kill shot. I certainly don’t like having to play that way, and we can’t get away with such down the road.

Did we play two games yesterday? In the game I watched our defense played pretty damn well. Our defense gave up one big play that lead to a touchdown but only allowed 2 for 12 on third down and forced 8 punts. Our defense had three sacks and three picks. The problem was the UConn defense played just as well. Yes, our offense needs to get much better and high scoring games are more fun to watch than defensive struggles but let’s recognize the defense for an outstanding effort!

Chilly water…please tell me you are joking. Spurrier is an awesome coach, but he’s not leaving south Carolina, 90k fans, and the sec for whatever we are offering.

Perhaps the weather affected the play calling yesterday, but if not it is more of the predictable Bible. UConn is a good team, but we are gonna have to step it up, to beat the big boys. And it needs to start we the OL. That was supposed to be a strong point for the team this year. But they have been quite unimpressive, and leaving Glennon running for his life, and no ground game. Hope we work that out the next 2 weeks, before ACC time. And lest I forget congrats to the defense, they played a great game, and corrected things from the UT game. Amerson came to play.

Ok, what about Bill Parcells, you know, the big tuna?

“U-G-L-Y, you ain’t got no alibi, you ugly! What? What? You ugly!” Sorry, couldn’t help myself. For those that haven’t seen it, that’s from the movie ‘Wildcats” where Goldie Hawn takes over the football team. This game was a hot mess, but the defense came through with some big plays. I’ll give UConn’s D their credit though, they blitzed our O-line all day long. I’m not asking for TOB’s head (or any of the staff’s head for that matter), but a slight change in philosophy wouldn’t hurt. I saw the same lack of pressure on the opposing WRs off the line as last week. Obviously, that’s not the only thing that needs to be worked on, but if you want a QB to have to think about what he’s doing, it helps if you can at least disrupt the timing between him and his WRs. GO PACK!

I’ll jump in on the “why would anyone think this was “our year”?” question.

If that weren’t the plan/case, then there’s no reason to let Russell walk away last season. The ONLY reason you let it happen is so we have Glennon here this year… so yes, we put one season at risk for the benefit of THIS season. And 6-6 better not be what we gave up a year of Russell for.

Back to the old RW whinning I see ….. I can’t see how our record or finish would have been any better last year with him. Unless he could of played defense in the first 5 games.

Like I have said over and over–TOB is a loser and we knew that when he was hired. His boring brand of football is the same year after year. Recruit a few 3 star, several 2 star an a lot of no stars and expect to “coach them up” is a joke. He apparently doesn’t even attempt to recruit the best players because he knows they won’t play for program like he produces. To hell with his great character, community activities, etc– HE IS PAID TO WIN GAMES. Compare him to a Dabo Swinny (A 1st year head coaching job)—he makes TOB
look like he is–totally inept. We have built such a bad reputaion for over 50 years in football that only $$$$$$$$ will solve our problems. A BIG NAME CAPABLE COACH, A COMMITMENT FROM THE TOP TO BIG TIME FOOTBALL, AND BETTER FACILITIES (LARGER STADIUM) ARE WHAT IS NEEDED. Otherwise the younger fans will end up just like me—fifty years of frustation.

I think many fans are starting to feel the pain of BC fans many years ago. They said he was a fun vacuum, sucked all the fun out of the f-ball program.

Win or lose, I just feel lethargic. I skipped the ATL game for no good reason except I feel no passion or excitement for our team.

Next weekend I’ll be in NC and was planning to go to the S Alabama game but now, I think I can find something better to do.

Point is, there are other fans like me, and this program is losing money. It is not operating at an optimal level. The program is just boring right now. Predictably unpredictably subpar. Yawnnnnnn.

To quote a few South Carolina fans from last week…”Sure was ugly, but it was a win…”

Keep on working and getting better is the key. No such thing as a bad day, when the Pack wins and the Holes lose.

Was about to leave the thread when I saw ChillyWaters comment on the OBC…

The pregame opening yesterday in Williams Brice started with Ray Tanner(dressed in a suit no less), starting the GAME-COCK cheer from the 40 yard line..Tears the guts out of a State fan knowing “what might have been”, but I’m darned proud of him.

ECU fans sure were quiet yesterday. I kept waiting for them to rush the field and tear down the goalposts.

Are we starting the ‘fire the coach, the sky is falling’ stuff two games into the year? We are? Ok, just making sure.

    My thoughts on TOB/Bible.

    1. We’re a finesse offense. We are sort of like a college version of a the Philadelphia Eagles. Good passing team, but can’t smash it in for a short gain. Wins more than they lose, but can’t win the big game.
    2. After the Davis/Stone mess post-Rivers, I’m glad we’re getting good QB play from a Bible coached offense.
    3. Problem with the pass protection is we started with a spread offense (and I guess) we expected to hit quick passes and beat their blitz. For whatever reason either Glennon didn’t get passes off quick enough or our WR ‘s couldn’t get open fast enough.
4 When it became clear we weren’t beating their blitz with the spread offense, we took forever to adjust.
    5. Right now the program’s ceiling is cracking into the Top 25 and being there most of the year.
    6. If you aren’t in the SEC, you are a second rate football program. That’s just the way things are now. I watched a bit of the LSU-Univ. of Washington game and the Tigers made the Huskies offensive line look like a JV high school squad playing against a college squad. Whatever the SEC did to get such an advantage over the rest of college football isn’t going to close anytime soon.
    7. I like the direction the program is going with TOB. We’re winning more than we’re losing. The big issue is do we have the players in place to make the step up and go 6-2 in the conference and maybe contend for a division title. I don’t know. Time will tell.

  13. Wulfpack 09/09/2012 at 3:54 PM #

I am not seeing the SEC’s collective dominance this year, at least not yet. Bama and LSU are obviously very good. After that, I am just not sure what they have. Arkansas lost to Louisiana-Monroe. Auburn has losses to Clemson and Miss State. Not sure yet what to make of UGA, UT, UF and USC. But none of those will be dominant teams. I don’t think it will be as strong as previous years. There are some good teams out there in other conferences. Southern Cal and Oregon. Oklahoma. FSU. We will see.

  14. VaWolf82 09/09/2012 at 4:58 PM #

unfortunately in college football a win isn’t just a win, style points count. if you think you can deny that just remember back to that season

Style points don’t matter to this or any State team that has ever taken the field.

  15. rtpack24 09/09/2012 at 6:56 PM #

Good win on the road. However, we have run the same plays since TOB and Bible arrived. The only fresh plays were when RW improvised. Yesteday it is 3rd and 1 and we give it to Washington who does not get a 1st down. Greene always gets positive yardage yet we rotate the backs so often no one gets in a groove. O-line sucked big time yesterday. Hopefully we get alot better quick or it is going to be a long year.

  16. GoldenChain 09/09/2012 at 8:22 PM #

I say anytime your Oline gives up 6 sacks they are having a bad day. Add a measly 82 yards rushing meaning no holes opened and the O-Line has under performed thus far. I THOUGHT that was supposed to be a strength.
    I hope they improve.

  17. packalum44 09/09/2012 at 8:46 PM #

“Are we starting the ‘fire the coach, the sky is falling’ stuff two games into the year? We are? Ok, just making sure.”

Maybe just the “fire” part. Sky isn’t falling, but it isn’t rising either. We are another 7/8 win team, and always will be with TOB.

Regardless, he might retire in the next year or two. I would crap a brick if we could land Bobby Petrino. He’s a Mike Leach type. Too good to pass up but too toxic for a top tier program. Why not us?

Dreaming is the only thing that gets me through State athletics.

Not gonna echo a lot of what’s already been said. However, my only question is why in the h-e-l-l is Dana Bible still calling read option set plays for NC State’s offense? It’s not like Glennon’s a running threat. Who the hell are we fooling with that? NO ONE.

Use these next two weeks to work on several things, stay healthy, and then get ready for the ACC.

    GO WOLFPACK!

  19. bigwolfpacker 09/09/2012 at 9:48 PM #

    A couple things:
Greene should play more. Hes the only rb that consistently gets positive yards. He wasnt on the field much in the second half for whatever reason.
Glennon holds the ball too long a lot. The OL has been below avg so far, they can only get better.
The D was good, we have a big front seven and they basically shut UCONN down.
    LBs played pretty well.

Did you think Auburn was a strong team? Do you think Clempson is?? Arky loss was a shocker, but I do detect a bit of “I don’t believe the SEC is strong”…

We’ll see too and I’ll bet you still won’t believe it…LOL! It defies gravity and reasoning unless you watch it every week during football season.

  21. Wulfpack 09/09/2012 at 10:17 PM #

Stick you know I’ve watched a ton of SEC ball over the years and I’ve said it has been THE most dominant conference for years. All I am saying now is I see 2 very good teams and a bunch of pretty average teams. I am not sold on anyone in the East. Yes, I think Clemson is good but that has nothing to do with this argument. They are obviously better than Auburn. Auburn is not any good, and Arkansas may not turn out to be either. I just see a dip this year.

  22. bigwolfpacker 09/09/2012 at 10:28 PM #

The disturbing thing is that more times than not (LSU and Bama exceptions) offense rules in college football and we havent looked great so far on that side of the ball.

IMO, if S. Carolina were in the ACC they would be the favorite to win the conference, and GA and FLA would be top contenders.

  23. ancsu87 09/09/2012 at 10:33 PM #

I have some land outside the NOLA area levees to sell anyone if they think AD Yow would hire hire Bobby Petrino. Besides that he is not that good of a coach. Mike Leach is a different story.

  24. choppack1 09/09/2012 at 10:51 PM #

Petrino gets the job done. The only question is whether or not he would have any credibility with kids and parents after his fall from grace. He hasn’t really paid a price yet – he’ll get another shot though and will excel wherever he lands.

  25. ancsu87 09/10/2012 at 6:53 PM #

Being a top flight coach and “getting the job done” are two different things. Not sure I ever saw his programs “excel” but then again everyone has opinions. I just hope we, NC STATE, do not consider hiring Bobby Petrino as a football coach. I don’t see a lot of difference between him and Butch Davis.
