[Update] Purvis cleared to attend class, Eligibility still pending

Rodney Purvis has had to find a lot of ways to kill time recently.

[Update 10:15am]:

Joe Giglio‏@jwgiglio – N.C. State freshman guard Rodney Purvis has been cleared by the NCAA to attend class, but his 2012-13 eligibility is still under review

[Original Post]:

Rodney Purvis is closing in on his first full week of the fall semester and has still yet to attend a class, courtesy of the NCAA and Upper Room Academy.  The tension amongst we in the interweb fan blogosphere is palpable.  I can only imagine how Rodney must feel.

The N&O’s Caulton Tudor feels the NCAA should pick up the pace on the Rodney Purvis fiasco.

It’s not that N.C. State’s basketball program or its 2012-13 season hinges entirely on the NCAA’s ruling on the player’s academic qualifications.

Purvis, a guard from Raleigh’s Upper Room Christian Academy, could be the best freshman in the ACC. But whether he turns out to good, bad or average, the Wolfpack should have enough talent and experience to contend for the league title and a favorable NCAA Tournament seed.

The important issues in the matter are Purvis’ peace of mind and ability to make a sound decision regarding his future if the clearinghouse says he’s ineligible.

As of now, Purvis is not enrolled in school and probably won’t be until the NCAA finishes its review of Upper Room Christian Academy’s academic status.

Additionally, a tweet yesterday from PackPride read as follows:

Pack Pride ‏@PackPride – MG: “It’s my understanding that we will learn something [on Purvis] in the next day or two.”

Good Luck to you Rodney.  Hopefully you can see the inside of classroom before the week is out.  We’re all behind you.

And keep your fingers crossed Wolfpack Nation.

I am not a betting man, but inclined to say worse case scenario should be second semester eligibility (in time for our killer ACC schedule).

It could though fall through the cracks of that bottom floor based on what has been reported on Bill Selfs Kansas commitments who were forced to RS.

Overall, the overarching news, is that RP is officially in the NCSU family. I’m sure there is a seep sigh from his gracious Mom to know her Baby has made.

Practice doesn’t start until October right?

Worst case he missed the first day or two of classes- and those are fluff days anyways, I don’t think he’ll be playing any real catch-up, especially since they’re probably 101-level classes.

If he’s taking like CSC114 his first semester, that’s a different story.

In other news, the NCAA announced all Tarheel athletes will be eligible for fall sports. Class attendance will be optional.

fullmoon – there was plenty of hype. That class included Harrow, Leslie and Brown. One McD AA – and 2 guys who were right on the cusp. It was a top-notch PG, top notch shooting guard and top notch forward.

The class before it had Wood, Howell, Vandy, Brown, Painter and Davis. Davis would transfer after having a solid freshman season.

Sidney brought in very solid talent. Unfortunately, as a basketball coach, he never even got close.

This class is special because of the 3 McD AA’s. It’s getting more hype than usual because, if he plays next year, Purvis will be a key cog in a team that will be expected to compete for a national championship. It will be a team that with a full roster, will be as talented and as experienced as any team in the conference.

Even without Purvis, this is still a solid team. However, Purvis’ status is critical for this team in terms of having the depth and ability to compete with anyone in the country.

I think Wilmwolf80 point was if other students from Upper Room were qualified to be accepted at universities (as I recall you had to graduate from an accredited high school with minimum requirements to attend a university) then what is the special issue with Rodney’s case? If he is cleared to attend classes how can he already been ineligible to play college sports? Didn’t the NCAA say they would not come back and investigate UNC-BS becasue academic progress does not fall under their review?
