Sights and Sounds of Fall Camp

The Pack’s T.Y. McGill(75) fights his way to the QB

For college football fans everywhere, anticipation and excitement always resurface right about now every year.  Wolfpack fans are no different, and in 2012 some believe State might even have the potential for a “special” season if the cards fall correctly (those metaphorical cards, as usual, pretty much boil down to avoiding injuries and enough guys with potential stepping up and filling holes, especially linebackers and pass catchers).

But as anyone will tell you, the path to January begins in August.

GoPack.com has begun a new video series, 2012 Opening STATEment, which will follow two Pack players, TE Anthony Talbert and DT T.Y. McGill, during 2012 fall camp.  In today’s first episode, we get a look at McGill going thru unit drills and then a short Q&A with him after the session ends.

Go Pack!

Coaches Poll has us getting some votes but not in top 25. We seemed to be thought of as 5th best team in ACC. That seems to be fair, we could go higher or a little lower in my opinion as it will come down to winning some close games. I think we will be in every game for sure. Ga Tech and Clemson are wild cards. I think people have UNC over ranked. Va Tech and Ga Tech coaches have got to be loving that 4-2-5 defense Fedora is putting in, the power running game will roll right over that. AS much as everyone is hopping on the FSU bandwagon, don’t count me in, Jimbo Fisher has yet to impress me. He got talent but he is yet to show he can coach them to win big time!

Really not sure how to assess UNC at this point. Gonna have to watch them a bit. They still have talent in the program and Fedora will bring focus and enthusiasm. He’ll probably be able to rally those kids to band together and treat every game as a statement – especially the one against us. So I could see them bonding together and being a tough out. But they have lots of new ground to cover to install his systems. And now they actually have to go to class too. They definitely have some unique challenges this year. Will be interesting to follow them. And of course, would be so much fun if we can notch win #6 and shut Fedora up. That would be a record number of wins in a row and SO much fun as Pack fans. And the thing is we SHOULD win this matchup given what we have coming back. If we don’t – shame on us.

Something worth noting: O’Brien and company are slipping into Georgia and picking up two and three star players who have decent grades and can be coached.

UGA has largely given up on that type of player and instead pull in the highest rated guys they want. UGA has a ton of great athletes that aren’t very good football players. Further and to be specific, McGill’s improvement last year was out of this world. He has a great motor, low center of gravity and uses his hands to the utmost. The players State is picking up out of Georgia are making a big difference.

As always, fewer injuries and turnovers will be the guide.

UGA does a poor job of coaching players up anyway so it doesn’t matter who they get. They have decided to have a good man instead of a good coach. Grantham is the only one keeping it real imo.

I’m not so certain about Grantham. They played a pitiful schedule last year after the first two games so I’d discount any progress that the defense supposedly made. FYI: I’ve season tickets 35 yd line, 12 rows back behind the Georgia bench on the end away from the railroad tracks.

A classic player in point is a former 5 star named Brandon Miller. 6’5″ 225 coming out of high school he was off the charts in everything. Problem is he had all of the measurable statistics in high school and he simply had more athletic prowess than 98% of the competition he faced at that level. Once at UGA he wasn’t aggressive enough to play end, they tried him in the middle and he couldn’t read plays. Looked like Tarzan and played like Jane, Georgia has had that type of player by the bucket load year after year after year since 2005-2006.

Melvin Ingram from Richmond County who played at South Carolina is a classic miss by most programs. 6’2″ and around 250 lbs in high school but he played point on the basketball team as well as excelled in track. Decent size but certainly a tweener for what most programs typically look for yet he is a football player. He gets up to 270-280 at South Carolina and suddenly he can play linebacker or line. Hard match up due to his ability.

McGill reminds me of Ingram to a certain degree.

No they don’t. They are still cheating with impunity.

I’m on the sunny side 17 rows up. I guess I should have said that Grantham > Martinez 🙂
