Hold the presses: NCAA and UNC agree

UNC has released a statement about the NCAA investigation into the alleged UNC academic problems.

With the NCAA enforcement staff, our internal working group of University Counsel Leslie Strohm, Senior Associate Dean Jonathan Hartlyn, and former faculty athletics representative Jack Evans interviewed faculty and staff in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, academic support counselors, and student-athletes who had taken multiple courses in the department.

Based on the joint review, UNC and the NCAA staff concluded there were no violations of current NCAA rules or student-athlete eligibility issues related to courses in African and Afro-American Studies. As a result, the NCAA did not add any allegations or include this issue during the University’s appearance in October 2011 before the Committee on Infractions.

On Aug. 23, 2012, University Counsel Leslie Strohm and Senior Associate Dean Jonathan Hartlyn provided an update to the enforcement staff. The NCAA staff reaffirmed to University officials that no NCAA rules appeared to have been broken.

Of all the responses I expected, that was the probably the last one and, frankly, I am not sure what to say about it. I did happen to see some interesting tweets about it though.

So UNC has years of documented, institutionalized academic fraud and no NCAA rules were broken? Got it.

And NCAA wonders why it’s a laughingstock?: http://bit.ly/O1bzUF Cue NCAA Prez to lecture on integrity, and who’s “in charge.”

I went to McDonald’s this morning, then read the paper. Am now nine credit hours closer to a UNC degree

RT @GoodmanCBS: Still trying to grasp the fact that NCAA announced no violations broken in UNC’s academic scandal.

Long story short on NCAA’s “conclusion.” UNC, unlike Penn St, didn’t make the evening news.

KilroyFSU ‏@KilroyFSU
A Boise State recruit sleeps on a couch, Boise is nailed. UNC uses fake classes to keep players eligible? Nothing to see here!

Devon Edwards ‏@Devon2012
What happened at UNC is infinitely more detrimental to everything the NCAA holds dear than criminal actions at Penn State. Not even close.

LRM Hijack:
The NCAA has essentially established a dangerous precedent that it operates outside the constraints of jurisdiction and due process (as with Penn State), while encouraging incentivizing its member institutions to set up a system that operates outside of acceptable academic standards for athletic gains (as with the Flagship).

I’m of the opinion that there are still wheels and gears turning in the background that need to be exposed over at the Dump on the Hump and that Gov. Martin’s investigation may still shed some light on the steaming pile at u*nc. Don’t everybody let up just yet. The national press will have some interest in this story now that u*nc has put out a statement for the n*caa.

*alleged (or stained due to hypocrisy)

  2. Pack Mentality 08/31/2012 at 2:59 PM #

Isn’t there the distinct possibility that this is nothing more than complete bullsh**. This is u*nc’s statement. Nothing they have said for the past few years as it applies to any scandal and punishment has proven to be anything more than a lie and attempt to deceive the public into believing that nothing will happen to them and everything will be over soon. Why would the NCAA release a statement when u*nc’s own investigation has barely just begun?

I’m not buying anything regarding their punishment that comes out of their own mouth. They have no credibility.

There are two words that apply here. The first one is bull.

  4. Wufpacker 08/31/2012 at 3:16 PM #

I missed that this was a statement released by them and not the NCAA. I would think it’s distinctly possible that this is just more spew and twisting of words. Sure, maybe the NCAA did say that. But it might not have been referring to the newly discovered (and as of yet undiscovered) issues.

If it was released by them I’ll figure it’s just more deflection and denial until proven otherwise. Pretty stupid to draw attention too themselves this way, however.

This is all being managed by their PR firm. This release came from UNC not the NCAA. Guess what happens tomorrow? First football game of the season. This will generate a postive buzz amongst the “sold out” crowd that will be there to watch Red Bull take down the mighty Phoenix.

All I can say is wow. Mine as well cheat, seriously.

Karma Sux *NC. Just wait and see what TOB protege Jason Swepson and his Elon Eagles have for cheats this weekend.

Tonight baby!! Dressed our best- Red from head to toe!

    This stinks to high hell.

How cowardly and coordinated to release this on a Friday afternoon prior to opening game-day holiday weekend. This is total crap.

This was DESIGNED to bury the “news” because they both know it’s crap.

The NCAA is the most ludicrous Kangaroo court ever.

  9. triadwolf 08/31/2012 at 4:33 PM #

This is UNC’s attempt to say this is all settled and everybody can just stop poking around. Hey, even the NCAA says so…

In reality there’s a real possibility that the NCAA comes back if those leading this crusade keep digging deeper. There’s enough here to hang’m; this is clearly a diversion tactic to keep the wolves away from the door. Hopefully it doesn’t work.

“The NCAA staff reaffirmed to University officials that no NCAA rules appeared to have been broken.”

This is strange and cloaked language – the overwrought use of past tense and the passive voice tells you this was scratched over and erased many times by their legal & PR squads. They’d like you to believe it’s a full picture, but it’s just smudge marks and remnants of a bolder line.

  11. blpack 08/31/2012 at 4:47 PM #

Crooked organization trying to ‘police’ a crooked university. The cover up continues, for now.
See you again soon NCAA, say 2015?

  12. jbpackfan 08/31/2012 at 4:49 PM #

I spent about 5-10 minutes with the NCAA Manual and based on a plain reading of it, there are clear violations of either rules or at the very least fundamental NCAA principles. I am working on a blog post about these obvious violations. The NCAA is full of it.

  13. MP 09/01/2012 at 6:40 AM #

LOL at all the tweets. *NC has figured out how to release statements to the media. Now if they could just figure out how to control that dang “social media thingy”…

  14. Pack78 09/01/2012 at 8:37 AM #

We keep hearing stories of moles deep underground and canaries singing at the dump on the hump…Kane (as one example) is getting his info from somewhere. This statement reminds of ‘I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.’

  15. eas 09/01/2012 at 8:56 AM #

My Wife (a Tarhole) felt kind enough to tell me about how UNC was cleared from the NCAA doing anything this morning. She said “why didn’t you give me that update yesterday?”. I am still steaming….With absolute proof to the entire world of academic cheating for players, they still get out of it with no penalties. Why can’t someone sue the NCAA for their actions (or lack of)?

The NCAA is the most worthless bunch of crooks.

Just as soon as the NCAA confirms that they do not care about academics by announcing they are not going to put UNC-CHeats basketball and football on probabtion for the intent to keep athletes eligible by committing academic fraud, which will be spoken load and hard if the CHeats are not penalized HEAVILY, every school in college that is part of the NCAA should immediately set up bogus schools and courses just for athletes that require little or no participation but just be sure to have one non athelete in just about every class. Imagine if you can promise mom and dad a diploma (doesn’t matter if it is worthless) and promise the kid a fantastic time partying and sleeping late, and never having to worry about a player being ineligible because of academics. Not only is it the smart thing to do, it is the only thing to do. Just be sure to keep it somewhat isolated from other cirriculums so you can brag about your schools fantastic academics if the accrediation committees come looking around. The road to athletic success has just been painted with bright red paint – if the NCAA doesn’t put a firm and final end to this by demonstrating cheating doesn’t pay by making the punishment outway the gain for UNC-CHeats.

For years our fan base has been accused of paranoia due to an inferiority complex. For years we are accused of falsely complaining of the officials protecting UNC in Basketball and Football because we just can’t accept losing to a better team. For years we have been told our academic standing is not and will not ever be the equivalent of that at UNC.

I hope the national press has an opportunity to now see what we have seen for years as a sham. If they will just report this factually and honestly, they will see that we have been right all along. I’m not going to hold my breath though. This corruption will be swept under the rug soon and we’ll never hear about it again.
