CBS’s Doyel crushes UNC-Cheat: “Maybe the ugliest academic scandal in NCAA history”

The hits just a keep on coming as the national media FINALLY wakes up to

I didn’t think it could get much better than this. I was wrong.

CBS’s Gregg Doyel tweeted today that he is mad at himself for ignoring the UNC academic fraud scandal and that he wouldn’t ignore it any longer. He didn’t. And, his work is one for the ages – click here.

The entire thing is a must read…but, we’ll call out some quotes that we want to have for easy reference in the

“Maybe the ugliest academic scandal in NCAA history”

We tend to believe what we want, and since my sister graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and loved the school so much that she still lives nearby, I didn’t want to believe this school — her school — could be so shameful.

But it is. The school’s cover is blown. The free ride, as I said, is over.

And to North Carolina’s shame on so many levels, the cover was blown by a fan at North Carolina State.

We have evidence not only of grades being given to athletes for at least a decade — but also that UNC academic support staff steered athletes to those classes. This can’t be dismissed as the rogue actions of a man named Julius Nyang’oro, the embattled former head of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies. If it was just him, well, that could be explained away to a certain extent. The school would be vulnerable to NCAA sanctions, but one man running amok? That’s not horrible.

What actually happened at North Carolina?

This is horrible.

Did the coaches know? Well, ask yourself this: Are we to believe that academic advisers were steering famous athletes to bogus classes behind the backs of the millionaire coaches who recruited, coached and needed those athletes to remain eligible?

Answers are coming, but already we know this: The scandal spanned the decade from 2001-11. Know what happened that decade? The UNC men’s basketball team played in three Final Fours. It won national titles in 2005 and ’09.

It’s time for the NCAA to start digging. In the meantime, North Carolina should get a head start on some of its own chores.

For starters? There are some banners at the Smith Center that need to come down.

    Is it Friday yet?

  3. TLeo 08/14/2012 at 4:36 PM #

Man, he blasted the holes with both barrells! Love it!!!

  4. Wufpacker 08/14/2012 at 4:37 PM #

Dang. He pretty much hit all the highlights, eh? Even got a parting shot at the folly that is Carl Carey. Way to get caught up, Gregg.

  5. old13 08/14/2012 at 4:40 PM #

He’s gotta have a certain amount of sympathy for U*NC-CHeat because it’s his sister’s alma matre. So good for him in calling them out anyway! Does the state government of N.C. understand the meaning and legal aspects of FRAUD in state institutions and the State’s LEGAL obligation to pursue such!

  6. MISTA WOLF 08/14/2012 at 4:50 PM #

BOOM!!! HEADSHOT!!! Oh what a tangled web they’ve weaved.

  7. state73 08/14/2012 at 5:04 PM #

It is finally sinking into the national media. Doyel is a long time tarhole homer. For him to see the light come on is huge. The only hope for the holes to receive their due is with a lot of national media pressure. The pompous bastards at chapel hole deserve the death penalty!

  8. Virginia Wolf 08/14/2012 at 5:13 PM #

And when it’s over, Death it will be!!!! When this is really investigated by an “Independent Council” their football and Basketball programs will/need to be shut down for at least 4 years!!! Just go ahead and shut down the whole place permanently!!! Oh what fun I’m having with this one. I’m right ansy waiting for U*NX’s response. I can hear it now, “We think this is over and we just need to move on!” Idiots!!!!

“And to North Carolina’s shame on so many levels, the cover was blown by a fan at North Carolina State.”

Oh my goodness, I can’t stop laughing.

An in the same week Roy was called out as the “most over-rated coach.”

The only thing I can conclude is the Mayans were right. This IS the end of the world.

  10. gumby 08/14/2012 at 5:21 PM #

I don’t think Doyel is a long-time tarhole homer so much as he’s an equal opportunity offender. He had a field day smacking us around because at the time we were easy pickins…now its Cheaterlina’s turn.

The long-standing apparent media “hands off” wall around Carolina has FINALLY crumbled and suddenly it’s not taboo to slam them. And what perfect timing – Olympics are over, Penn State is old news, baseball is…well…baseball, and nothing else really happening in the world of sports that hasn’t already been flogged ad nauseum. Writers love a scandal, and this is one for the ages.

It may only be August, but it’s already open season on rams…

If the Peppers’ transcript is authentic, what implications might this have for Mac Brown, since he was at UNC back then? Could a program that may have operated under said coach have transferred to Texas? This could be big, very big.

  12. Virginia Wolf 08/14/2012 at 5:35 PM #

It seems to me that the wise thing for U*NX to do is to come out pubicly and say we have screwed ourselves and we are asking for an Independent investigation and we invite the NCAA to return and we will accept any penalties they give us to get through this and still exist as a University! Otherwise, just shut the pool hall down!!!!

  13. tuckerdorm1983 08/14/2012 at 5:48 PM #

Being a lawyer I want to know how you can prove any of this. How do we know or prove that the classes were no-show. Are the people that took the classes talking? How do we prove that the people in athletic academic advising knew these were no show classes. Maybe Peppers took this Independent studies and actually had to do work. Hard evidence is what is needed. We may all know what was going on, but proving may be a little harder. We are talking about classes that were taught perhaps as long as 15 yrs ago. My point is I know that they are cheating bastards, but I worry they will weasel out of it. Maybe they could find a “Deep Throat” or maybe the N & O could find a Woodward and Bernstein. (these are all watergate scandal references for anyone that does not know). It seems that unless the NCAA is slapped about the head and face with scandal they pretty much ignore it.

I’m troubled by his choice of the word ‘maybe.’

Why is that word in there?

  15. JohnGalt78 08/14/2012 at 6:14 PM #

I have a connection to, and have had a private conversation with, a current BOG member.

That person’s response when I inquired about all this: “All the schools in the system do what UNC did. UNC was the one that got caught.”

I’ve heard this a dozen times already when busting on my UNC buddies. I was actually surprised to hear it from a BOG member. I was naive.

  16. highstick 08/14/2012 at 6:21 PM #

    It’s all George Bush’s fault..

  17. JohnGalt78 08/14/2012 at 6:23 PM #

David Glenn is going to have trouble with the CBS article. He was intently focused today on diverting this from the massive scandal it truly is to a simple “privacy rights violation” regarding the improper posting of the Pepper’s transcript. Actually, he reflects the approach that most UNC alums seem to be taking…..HOW DARE YOU accuse US of such a horrible thing when it was nothing more than some dumbass lackey posting something they shouldn’t have…. humph!

^ Said the joker to the thief.

UNC is like a serious felon who justifies their felonies by saying, so what, all people break the law (i.e. CHEAT in NCAA context).

Ok true. All schools might jaywalk or have traffic violations, but not all schools commit the types of crimes you have sir!

  19. GAWolf 08/14/2012 at 6:39 PM #

Doyel also has to realize he was wrong about NC State given the quick rise of our basketball program under a competent coach.

He owes us one, quite frankly.

  20. Wufpacker 08/14/2012 at 6:46 PM #

Glenn, like most UNC folks as you point out, has trouble with a lot of things. Therefore, ignore it. If that doesn’t work, deny, divert and deflect. Nothing new for him or them so why change now? Depending on where this thing goes it might get quite entertaining. Actually, I guess it already is.

Don’t get your hopes up about this. The NCAA isn’t going to do squat to harm one of their biggest cash cows.

Doyle and the rest of the media are just filling dead time with this until the start of NFL and NCAA. As much as I’ll hate it, the holes will get away with it by promising it’s all taken care of

Wow! I have to say I’m impressed. The cover-up is blown and it is only a matter of time before heads roll. I think the NCAA will be shamed into going back in. Even thought they either did a sorry job of investigating the first time OR got suckered into believing the UNC-cheat spin. Going forward the NCAA crooks have to police the Cheats a second time or come to the realization that they’ve given schools a green to cheat 24/7. It is great the chorus the ‘Take the banners down’ is swelling.

golf76, Peppers didn’t arrive at UNC until 1999, 2 years after Brown left for Texas. Brown coached at UNC from 88-97.
