Not too long ago I got sucked into a little verbal sparring with a Wal-Mart Tar heel fan who – to my astonishment – actually threw out the ‘insult’ of ‘Chris Washburn’. I kid you not. Almost THIRTY YEARS after the top rated high school basketball player in the country – who was heavily recruited by UNC’s Dean Smith – ‘disgraced’ NC State with the ‘awful’ crime of stealing a stereo (the horror!!!!) and effectively not filling out his SAT (because there were no minimum academic standards at the time), many Tar heel fans can come up with nothing better to say.
A long list of responses ‘arrove’ in my stream of consciousness but, I just laughed…and cried…and moved on. I hope my buddy is reading this today.
Christopher Hawkins, 30, a former University of North Carolina football player and a man implicated in the purchase of a jersey from University of Georgia football player A.J. Green, pled guilty Monday to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute charges.
Hawkins was initially arrested by Georgia State Patrol troopers on April 23, 2009 in Morgan County while driving a U-Haul truck for former NFL running back Willie Parker from Florida to North Carolina. According to courtroom testimony during the October 2011 trial, Hawkins was given a key to the truck and told to deliver furniture to North Carolina.
“Nobody told him there were drugs in the back of the truck,” Pate told jurors during the first trial.
However, GSP troopers located approximately 96 grams of crack-cocaine wrapped in duct tape, peanut butter and pepper in a Wendy’s fast-food bag in the locked U-Haul.
If Hawkins’ story is to be believed, then one has to wonder what role former UNC player Willie Parker played in this fiasco?
^That, of course, is just one of the many UNC-related angles of this story that will probably go forever unanswered. In light of all of the friendships and money that was directly and indirectly related to Hawkins and his relationships with UNC players (who still called him a good friend even after the ‘crap hit the fan’), it sure would be interesting to know the source of Hawkins’ money and whose hands ended up holding the gifts his money purchased.
If old Hawk is struggling for money today…I’m willing to bet that he has a lot of information and stories
