“Clustering” at The Flagship?

Dan Kane isn’t letting up, referencing a report two years ago by the Indianapolis Star questioning “clustering” (or, as they say in Swahili, kuna tofauti za) at The Flagship (News & Observer):

The report notes that seven of the players on UNC-Chapel Hill’s 2005 championship team who had graduated by the time the story was published all received the same degree — a bachelor of arts in African and Afro-American Studies.

The Star interviewed Sean May, who was the center for the team, and his comments have a particular resonance today, with the university now acknowledging a major academic fraud case in that department involving classes with little or no instruction. Many of these classes have high enrollments of athletes in the two big money sports — basketball and football.

According to the Star: ‘May said he started as a double major with communications, but dropped it so he could graduate faster after leaving for the NBA.Afro-American and African studies, May said, offered “more independent electives, independent study. I could take a lot of classes during the season. Communications, I had to be there in the actual classroom. We just made sure all the classes I had to take, I could take during the summer.”‘

May left the school for the NBA following the 2005 championship, but collected his degree four years later. It’s unclear what classes he took or who taught them. The academic fraud centers on the former chairman, Julius Nyang’oro, who is being allowed to retire effective July 1.

More to come. Count on it. After all, it’s not Friday yet.

WRAL Sports is really missing an opportunity to break national news that ESPN would love.

It’s interesting to everyone – love them or hate them, we’re all compelled by what is going on over there. We all want to know about this potential drama-bomb. And because the school has a strong brand, their reach goes nationwide. I’ve seen UNC hats or stickers or mailboxes many times out of state. Hell, I saw a UNC Pennant in the background of a scene in ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’.
My point is that A lot of people want to know about this story, and I hope we eventually get some “breaking news” to glue our eyes to the WRAL station/website.

^^in other words, I agree with that guy

C’mon Alpha, that’s hard-hitting journalism right there. What if WTVD had scooped them on that on their own website? It’s not the puppy’s fault, he’s just caught in the middle. Besides, the triangle’s local media is what it is, regardless of the format. I shouldn’t be angry with a zebra because it has stripes, should I?

At the risk of sounding as if I’ve joined the tinfoil hat club, it seems the local media in general (with a few notable exceptions) has been more than willing/happy to continue handling this ever-growing issue in a “business as usual” manner. That is to say, treating this “story” the same way they historically treat pretty much any story/information that has the potential to reflect poorly on the flagship….by giving it coverage only when necessary, and spinning that coverage to as much of a degree as possible.

    Same as it ever was.

WRAL can’t be bothered with this kind of news. All their focus needs to be on Greg Fishel telling us it’s going to be hot and humid with isolated showers everyday through the end of September.

I don’t think our football team or basketball team was in much danger of failing. Football was 943, basketball 947, both out of 1000. UNC BB was 905, football 895. We came out right in the middle of the ACC in just about all scores. Wrestling, which did have a failing grade recovered to 1000. In fact I believe I read that State was up across the board. And all that with NO Swahili, imagine that!

Those darn classes where you have to “be there in the actual classroom”. I can understand how they could get in the way of things.

Dan Kane had better sleep with one eye open or else he may end up wherever they put Joe Giglio.

As much as many of you would rather see a thermonuclear detination approximately 20 miles west of Raleigh, I’m quite content to continue watching this slow motion train wreck. It keeps me entertained through these slow summer months. Besides, this lack of openess and candor can’t help but make things worse in the end. Deny, deny, deny. Isn’t denial the first step of the ten step process? This will go on for years!!!!

Not to derail the thread, but that would be one of the few forecasts that he got right all year.

    Current Forecast.

According to the DualCrapper5000 there is a sh@t storm heading toward Chapel Hill. Things start out with large gassy smelly wind gusts. Then large size brownish hail like things fall from the sky. It looks like the center of the storm is around the Kenan Staduim area. Folks you better take your umbrella with you today. We might see a funnel cloud whirling about pulling things down at the very end. It should all be wiped up by the late afternoon.

Hope Greg is right on this one.

LOL, Tucker. Well played sir, well played.

  13. Greywolf 06/21/2012 at 10:47 AM #

Yeah Tucker, that is very funny. One place I hope you are off is that the ‘storm’ is centered over the Nose Dome.

UCONN should have offered Afro American and African classes. Maybe they’d still be eligible to make the tourney.

So the really scary thing about the report released this AM in the N&O and discussed here – the low scores UNX received – so it appears they have gone above and beyond to register athletes for phony classes to keep them eligible. What would those scores look like WITHOUT the administration help?

  16. tuckerdorm1983 06/21/2012 at 1:39 PM #

    tally ho!!!

“Coloring outside the lines…no big deal. Look! Michael Jordan’s here!” UNC spokesman.

Tucker-Plase let Greg know that it is now pronounced ‘Kenum Stajum’…

  19. YogiNC 06/21/2012 at 3:21 PM #

^^ Maybe we should ask the NCAA to come in and do a recount for UNC and consider all those “rogue” classes to be failures. Ole Roy would have a heart attack! Both football and BB would be below 900.

“Isn’t “cluster” just the first word?”

No, it’s half of a word. The whole word can be hyphenated.

  22. highstick 06/22/2012 at 4:06 PM #

Tucker, you’re bringing back memories. I have to concede that I worked and “relied” on the guv’ment. I had one student loan for $250, had GI Bill money for 4 years of service, and worked at UPS at nights. I ate a lot of hamburger, green beans and rice from Winn Dixie occasionally splurging on making spaghetti!

“Tuckerdorm obviously cheated and stole from someone if he “earned” his own way through school with no help from Uncle Sam. ”

He just had the NC Constitutional mandated help from Uncle State Legislature that made tuition very affordable in the 1980’s, as he pointed out up thread.

    *********************************

Just curious how much pressure has to be placed on the N.C. State legislature to get them to act and force an independent investigation?

I know some of you have probably written your legislator, but there really should be a no-hold-barred investigation, with subpoena power, that only the state legislature can demand.

I don’t see anyone else – the NCAA, the ACC or the BoG – setting up anymore investigations.

The state legislature seems to be the only hope to unearth anything and even that’s a long shot.
