N & O: UNC-CH football and basketball players made up 39% of the suspect classes

I hope nobody passes out from shock when they read this N & O article that explains how UNC-CH football and basketball players accounted for a wildly disproportionate number of the enrollees in the imaginary classes over in Chapel Hill.  We never saw that one coming!  Wow!  Who could have imagined!

Some highlights:

There were 686 enrollments for the 54 suspect classes. Of those, football players accounted for 246 of the enrollments, or 36 percent, while basketball players accounted for 23 of the enrollments, or three percent, according to UNC. All told football and basketball players accounted for 39 percent of the enrollments.

Football and basketball players account for less than one percent of the total undergraduate enrollment…

and

The investigation covered courses offered within the department from the summer of 2007 to the summer of 2011, though all but two of the classes were offered from 2007 to 2009. UNC officials said the only two people within the department who appear to have been responsible for the suspect classes are Nyang’oro and his administrative secretary, Deborah Crowder. Some professors interviewed for the probe said they did not authorize grade changes that students taking the classes had received and said their names had been forged on academic records.

Crowder retired in September 2009 and declined requests for interviews by the investigators.

and by far the funniest thing I have read in weeks:

On Monday, Tom Ross, the UNC system president, said in a statement that he saw no need to look further into the academic improprieties.

“I believe that this was an isolated situation and that the campus has taken appropriate steps to correct problems and put additional safeguards in place,” Ross said.

For those of you too young to remember, this is exactly how the UNC system acted in 1990.

While we are on the subject of Professor  Nyang’oro, let’s all remember that, according to this N & O piece from September 2011, he hired a professional football agent to teach classes at UNC-CH.  Julius Peppers’ agent in fact.  Hmmmm.  That’s interesting.

And does everyone remember this tweet from UNC-CH running back Shaun Draughn?  We did an entry on it at the time. No wonder he did not know what his classes were or who his professors were!

This tweet from UNC-CH basketball player Reggie Bullock is even more interesting given recent events.

Stay tuned

Does anyone know if there is a stated reason for why the investigation goes back to 2007 and not earlier? Nyang’oro became chairman of UNC’s African studies department in 1992. I see little reason to believe that this issue began in 2007.

Also, from the Daily Tar Heel:

“University registrar data on the class rating website unc.blinkness.com shows that between 2003 and 2009, Nyang’oro gave out 74 percent As, 25 percent Bs and 1 percent Cs to a total of 1,126 students.”

That is ridiculously easy grading. Add it all up and it seems obvious that football players in particular were steered to his classes because it was an easy GPA booster with minimal work and little to no attendance required.

Does the fact that Nyang’oro did this for the other 60% of students who were not athletes alleviate the athletic programs of accountability for this?

Nothing changes on cheater hill. They admit to academic fraud, but said there was no preference for athletes. 39% of the enrollment in these fake classes were basketball and football players!! Someone outside UNC-CHeat needs to do a real investigation. Where is the BOG? Surely not the “flagship” maybe the CESSPOOL !!

Wow. As an ACC fan I am embarrassed. Friday PM release, trickle, trickle…. More to come for sure.
    216 is the combo.

Powerful stats already – but, 23 from the basketball team seemed like a very high percentage of total players to me so I ran some numbers. I was interested to see the percentage of players from the basketball team that were enrolled in these classes… between the 2007-2008 season and 2010-2011 season, the basketball program saw a total of 37 unique players on it’s official roster (www.tarheeltimes.com and Wikipedia).

That means disproportionately high percentage (62.1%) of players on the UNC Men’s basketball team were at one time enrolled in these “classes”… and you’re telling me their academic “advisers” weren’t aware of this academic fraud?

Anyone wanna go behind me and crunch some numbers or poke some holes in my 15 minute analysis?

You should go back and read this. It has a TON of great research on who is in AAS.

I’ll take credit for this…It’s been about an hour and a half since I called them out.

A few carries before he started to go off, I wondered why Washington got so much playing time.

You see what you can do if you’re willing to be wrong?

  7. choppack1 05/07/2012 at 10:52 PM #

And I’d like to send Ross a bill for my blood pressure. Geez, these people have absolutely no shame. They make John Edwards seem humble. (Is it any wonder he claims the Tar Heels??)

love the first pic … nice work

  9. Tau837 05/07/2012 at 10:56 PM #

JKL, isn’t it 23 enrollments, as opposed to 23 players? That is, couldn’t one player have accounted for multiple enrollments? Not sure your analysis is accurate.

  10. statered 05/07/2012 at 10:59 PM #

remember the 40% number is only football and basketball players. How much do you want to bet the remaining percentage is made up of a lot of baseball, women’s soccer and basketball, and various other sport athletes? Hell I bet this is one of those classes regular students could not get in to because registration was closed as all sections were filled.

This is ridiculous. I am really disappointed in Tom Ross. Coming from Davidson, he knows about academic integrity, an honor code that works and personal morals and ethics among administrators, professors, students and student-athletes. For him to blow this off and say that UNCheat has handled this “isolated” situation is inexcusable. The problem extends much further than the African American Studies department at UNX. An independent investigation of the magnitude of the NCSU inquisition of 1989 needs to be ordered immediately and heads need to roll starting at the top.

“I believe that this was an isolated situation”

As in isolated to Chapel Hill?

  13. oceanman 05/07/2012 at 11:36 PM #

Like they always say, its not the crime that does them in, its the coverup!! Its obvious that a coverup is in full swing.

The most disgusting part is the Ross whitewash. He might as well have said “everybody is doing it.” It’s obvious from that statement that Ross is in the game. He is trying to just make it go away and minimize the problem when he should be exerting leadership and demanding a complete independent investigation. He should appoint an investigator tomorrow morning. What good can come from this incident or, what is to prevent it from happening at one of the other 15 universities, if there is not full disclosure of the culture and dynamics that allowed it to prosper. What is the deterrent established to prevent it from happening again. Thorp and Ross were captains of the ship when it ran aground. Pack your bags.

Listen carefully and you can hear the mavi (Swahili for dung, Wikipedia) hitting the fan.

  14. oceanman 05/08/2012 at 12:00 AM #

If your as ticked off about this as many appear to be, then drop Tom Ross an email. So I will not be accused of giving out his email address, it can be found at http://www.northcarolina.edu/directories/index.htm. Don’t forget to copy your favorite state Legislator and the Governor.

  15. Wufpacker 05/08/2012 at 1:48 AM #

[email protected] – That’s his email address.

No worries about posting it I don’t think. Feedback from citizens is what it’s there for, or at least it should be. It’s publicly available on the UNC System website so this isn’t like giving out Karl Hess’ personal or business phone numbers so irate fans can bug him at home or at work just because they’re pissed.

While we’re at it, there’s a list of email addresses (and street addresses and phone numbers) for the BoG members as well. Follow oceanman’s link above and then just choose “Board of Governors” in the center pull down and a list comes up. I won’t post it here only because it’s 7 pages long. Fill up their inboxes folks. Wouldn’t hurt to send snail mail as well. But please…be respectful.

And oceanman’s suggestion of copying the Gov and your reps is a good one, and you should let the BoG members know (in your correspondence to them) that you will be doing so AND letting the Gov and reps know that you’ve already contacted them (the BoG members) about the same issue. Those folks are appointed by state reps in the general assembly and their RE-appointment might hinge on doing the right thing here if enough people make noise.

  16. blpack 05/08/2012 at 6:52 AM #

As if this is only isolated to football and basketball…
It is official, the BoG has lost its mind and a UNC-ch degree value is falling like formerly Enron stock. This is bad for them on so many levels yet they don’t seem to care. It may take a decade to get the stench out of their sheepskins. However we still hear, ‘move along, nothing to see here.’ Rules just don’t apply to them.

  17. Pack78 05/08/2012 at 7:03 AM #

This follow-up article is the top-of-the-fold story in the local section of the CO under the headline ‘Players Packed Suspect Classes’. How long will the crap spouted by co-conspirators like Ross and Orr be tolerated? Looks like the flagship has hit the berg and is going down…

  18. rtpack24 05/08/2012 at 7:46 AM #

I do not know about last few years but for years basketball and football players took Portuguese to satisfy the language requirement. Someone with the contacts should check that out. Hard to believe that more members of the admin. at the school are not speaking out to the media.

  19. coach13 05/08/2012 at 8:25 AM #

I just hope we have cleaned up our cupcake classes a bit to have some form of accountability since this is drawing the spotlight. Look for someone (probably a UNC advocate in the media) try to investigate all such classes at the other universities so they can say “look everyone is doing it”. I don’t mean you have to get rid of easy classes, but you should have to do something to earn a grade. hell, I graduated from engineering and I took some easy bake classes myself. Our players do need to at least got through the motion.

  20. wolfpackdawg 05/08/2012 at 8:35 AM #

Help..I need the Facebook icon thingy so I can post it. Thanks.

  21. Hungwolf 05/08/2012 at 8:51 AM #

The UNC board has already been quoted as they are not going to do anything. One of the UNC System BOG members has said she doesn’t know if they will do anything until she talks to other board members. In other words since this happened at Chapel Hill we will sweep it under the rug and hope nothing comes of it. If it were NCSU or ECU well heads would roll. Disgusting.

The reason for paying off Butch “The Chief” Davis has been confirmed. The academic fraud system was in place way before he ever got hired. He just ran with it.

The reason for hiring Hubert Davis with no bball coaching experience as an assisitant becomes very clear. They hoping his conncections at ESPN and the national media will pay off in good exposure and a lack of coverage of the stink in Chapel Hill. Why else hire someone with no experience in coaching, when so many with experience wanted the job? Maybe Davis speaks Swahili also?

  22. StateFans 05/08/2012 at 8:59 AM #

Isn’t this the same Tom Ross who kept a condo in Chapel Hole for the sole purpose of attending UNC basketball games?

  23. TheAliasTroll 05/08/2012 at 9:18 AM #

“I just hope we have cleaned up our cupcake classes a bit to have some form of accountability since this is drawing the spotlight.”

I don’t think the issue is cupcake classes. I think the issue is GIVING out grades for classes that don’t exist and are taught by no one.

  24. TheAliasTroll 05/08/2012 at 9:24 AM #

Oh and I can’t wait to hear what David Glennnnnn has to say about this. If he even mentions it, he’ll probably attribute it to racism some how.

  25. vtpackfan 05/08/2012 at 9:25 AM #

Some thought of why its a 07-11 issue for the almighty wise ones at UNX. Department in question answers to Dean of certain college. Thorpe Dean of Arts and Science from 93-07. Any questions?
