Pack Baseball Downs Charlotte

Wolfpack Baseball continued its winning ways on Wednesday night, dispatching the Charlotte 49ers by a final score of 6-3.  GoPack.com has a great write up here.  Sounds like Trea Turner continues to impress.  The Pack’s leadoff man apparently displayed both speed and power last night.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Trea Turner led off the game with his second homerun of the year, but No. 19 NC State still needed a four-run fifth inning to put away Charlotte 6-3 Wednesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Turner’s homer in the first highlighted a 3-for-4 evening with two RBIs and three runs to spark the Wolfpack (27-12) offense. The freshman from Lake Worth, Fla. turned on the jets for an infield single, and reached on a bunt single for his remaining hits.

The N&O’s Bill Woodward had a fantastic piece on Trea Turner a couple days back which you can see here if you missed it.

Turner leads the nations in steals and broke the Wolfpack single-season record of 30 (Kyle Wilson, 2009) in just 31 games. With 15 regular-season games left, the ACC tournament and an almost-certain berth in the NCAA field of 64, the ACC’s single season record of 63 — set by former UNC star Brian Roberts in 1998 — is within striking distance.

Turner has been clocked at 6.4 seconds in the 60-yard dash and 4.37 seconds in the 40, sprint times that place him in baseball scouts’ elite category, and his speed and mindset combine to disrupt opponents.

“I don’t think Brian [Roberts] had Turner’s pure speed,” said John Manuel, Baseball America’s Editor in Chief. “The mindset has to be the same. Trea Turner is always looking to go. And he’s never satisfied with just stealing second. Every time he gets on base, he’s a one-man rally.”

State returns to action Friday evening at 6:30pm as they welcome the Duke Blue Devils to town for the weekend series.

IMO this was the most amazing thing from that article on Turner:

“Turner has been caught stealing only twice this season, both times when the pitcher threw behind him after he had already taken a step toward second. No catcher has been able to throw him out this season.”

    He has 41 stolen bases!

I don’t follow college baseball closely enough to know how rare this is, but it seems incredible to me.

I follow State Baseball, of course, but I don’t keep up with most teams outside the ACC (including national stats leaders) so I don’t know how Turner’s pace compares to leaders from past seasons. Perhaps Dr.BadgerPack can give us some better perspective on that.

That being said, Turner’s 41 steals is ten ahead of the guy in 2nd place. That tells me it is probably pretty incredible.

Rare is the 4.37 speed on the diamond. The totals are fabulous, but the freakin’ wheels, man.

Great to see Wolfpack Baseball getting some love. And great to see Turner getting local attention, the kid is lightning fast. I hope the “One-Man Rally” nickname sticks.

Off the top of my head… 105-ish is the single season record… Coastal Carolina had two players steal 50+ in the last season or two.

“I don’t follow college baseball closely enough to know how rare this is, but it seems incredible to me.”

For perspective- you are considered an exceptional base stealer if you can sneak up to about 85% on success rate. 41/43 is ludicrous. Truly elite.

What I was really focused on was the fact that he has stolen 41 bases and has not been thrown out at second base even one time. That is ridiculous.
