NC State signs deal with Adidas

GoPack.com reports NC State has signed a deal with Adidas.

I am not sure what to think about this. I have heard that Nike will never sign NCSU because of the whole Jimmy V travesty so that might not even be an option but Adidas has always seemed like the “runner up” in the shoe wars. However, the list of schools signing with Adidas is pretty impressive. Will this have any effect on recruiting?

No matter what it should bring in some extra funds and that is extremely important.

    Kansas is also Adidas.

EDIT: Whoa, RickJ with the impressive list. My little addition of Kansas seems pretty sad now. Nevermind.

One of my favorite bits of copywriting ever is in this commercial for Adidas Adizero: “You don’t lace these up. You tie them down.” Love that.

How is this deal a “big deal” exactly? Is it because it is the first time we got a deal that covers all sports? Are we getting more money than we used to get with our old deal(s)? Is this an accomplishment for Debbie, a feather in her cap?

    Basically, what’s the big deal?

+1 WTNY, this is an important step in continuing to unify our brand and the money is a nice perk also, congrats Deb!

This is a big deal for our soccer team, right?

“Which is projected to save the school between $900,000 and $1 million a year from its previous deals with a variety of shoe and apparel companies.” from News Ob.

Wait, so with these deals we pay Adidas. Not they pay us?

    Color me confused

Sorry to be off subject but I need to turn to my Wolfpack family for some quick advice. I’m moving to the Raleigh area and I need to know which is a better place to live. wake Forest or Knightdale? My wife has a new job at Wake Med. Some kind input would really be appreciated.

“Didn’t we have a basketball shoe deal with LA Gear for a short time at one point?”

I hope they were at least LA Lights.

wolfpack15, We lived in WF (and my wife worked at Wake Med incidentally). I prefer WF to Knightdale (I worked in Knightdale while we were living in WF). It just seemed to have more stuff and to be closer to stuff without feeling like you were in some big city. It was a nice area to live. I don’t know about living in Knightdale, though, so someone else could chime in.

PackerInRussia, thanks so much for your input and help. This is why I love the Wolfpack family.

Maybe we can get some BKs….if anyone remembers those.

wolfpack15, I live in Raleigh, but I like WF and Knightdale. Knightdale has grown up a lot. We hop on 540 and are there about as quick as where we might go in Raleigh. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking Knightdale is more convenient for trips to Raleigh. Coming to Raleigh from WF during peak times is probably a much worse commute. (Just guessing…)

There are some really good restaurants in Knightdale. And they have some good shopping centers with several of the big chain stores there, too. If I had to pick right this instant, I’d probably pick Knightdale.

wolfpack15 – If you move to Wake Forest, I’d advise you to live where you’ve got access to Hwy 98 and Creedmoor Rd (Hwy 50) to get to Raleigh. The alternative is US 1/Capital Blvd which is traffic hell in the morning and afternoon during the week – probably one of the worst commutes in all of North Carolina. Your wife will probably not like that drive to and from work.

K-town is not as nice as Wake Forest, but it’s more affordable. Although you might have more difficulty reselling your home than in WF, the commute to Raleigh, especially downtown and to State games, will be much easier.

Adidas has certainly stepped up their game the last few years especially in basketball and football. The gear is lighter and more comfortable. They have more elite pro athletes sponsored than just five years ago. Our teams have been getting better gear from Adidas as can be seen from the new football uniforms with stretchy fabric or the updated bball jerseys and wearing the D.Rose shoes / tights / shooter sleeves etc. Athletes care about swag. This doesn’t affect soccer as adidas has sponsored the soccer team for over a decade (unless the amount of support has gone up).

Love the commercial MrPlywood linked. Saw RGIII is an adidas athlete too. I think there are some clear advantages to being an Adidas school, especially while Adidas is trying to play catch up (and having some success) to Nike.

“Wait, so with these deals we pay Adidas. Not they pay us?”

From what I understand Addidas will supply us with all the gear that we had to buy in the past and that is the $900k savings.

    Knightdale schools suck.

wolfpack15. is your wife working at the WakeMed on Falls of Neuse or New Bern Ave?

I live in WF, so am partial. I love it. However, the comments about getting to stuff are correct. I just prefer the wooded scenery and ample lots available. I am not as familiar with Knightdale’s real estate, so i can’t compare the two.

    Paying vs Being Paid

This goes back to one of the statements Debbie Yow made when she first took over. As best I can tell, during Lee Fowler’s tenure, our high profile revenue sports had deals with multiple apparel companies who paid them to varying degrees to wear the gear. Meanwhile, our non-revenue sports were shelling out cash for gear, again from different companies, to the now mentioned tune of 900k+.

She implied last year during a press conference that only an idiot AD would fail to leverage his/her revenue generating sports to cover the costs of the non-rev sports apparel via a single Unified Apparel Contract and she mentioned that this would be one of her first/major goals.

Edit: Found a quick link referencing this, http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/print-edition/2011/12/23/ncsu-against-time-to-nail-apparel.html?page=all

So now, instead of paying for our non-rev apparel, it will be covered in full by Adidas while simultaneously increasing the overall revenue for the Athletic Department on the original contract.

Fantastic job in my opinion 🙂

    ^^^ “…only and idiot AD…”

Idiot is synonymous with Fowler…nothing new there.

“She implied last year during a press conference that only an idiot AD would fail to leverage his/her revenue generating sports to cover the costs of the non-rev sports apparel…”

I always thought this should have been grounds for Fowler’s firing over and above just about everything else he was inept at (no need to list it all here I don’t suppose). It was easier for him to cut corners and run a nickel and dime operation I guess. Still can’t believe he won an award for his performance.

The only real impact on recruiting of an apparel contact yes in basketball recruiting, the aau teams have deals with companies and the companies like to keep the kids in the fold. Kind of a unofficial shoe deal until they can sign a shoe deal, gotta protect their investments. Anyone know who sponsors amile Jefferson’s aau team is sponsored by?

But can we get some hats that don’t suck for once. I haven’t had a decent cap since the chuck Amato days (Nike cap white with block s fitted cap) all the new caps don’t fit my ginormous head

  24. DirtyCap 04/25/2012 at 5:24 PM #

    Just my 2 cents:
UNX and Duke are both with Nike.
We are State and should Dare to be Different, and not just settle to be another sheep in the herd.

Plus with so many Nike schools, the kids who are brand loyal because of Nike camps will be spread thin. While the kids who are brand loyal to Adidas because of Adidas camps will have less to choose from. Although, I can not prove that kids actually think that way in regards to choosing a university to play for.

Ditto on some nice hats for people with large heads.
