N & O wrong again!

Most readers I assume have heard about UNC-CH coach Fedora’s over-excited statement from Wednesday night.  When asked about the State rivalry, Fedora apparently exclaimed ““I don’t want to talk about [the rivalry] too much because I don’t want to legitimize their program.”  Yeah whatever.  I actually don’t care that much about his dumb comments.  What I do care about is the mistake in the N & O’s online and print coverage:

UNC fans are eager for the Heels to break a five-game losing streak against N.C. State – a streak that represents UNC’s longest stretch of futility in the series since losing five consecutive games from 1978 through 1982.

State actually won from 1988-1992.

1988: 48-3

1989: 40-6

1990: 12-9

1991: 24-7

1992: 27-20

And State did not win 5 straight from 1978-1982, so they got it doubly wrong.  Is it asking too much for our “home-town” paper to get basic, easy-to-check facts correct?

Before everyone starts, just keep in mind that it is wiser to never attribute to conspiracy what you can just as easily attribute to stupidity. \

Or, in this case, simple incompetence. Those facts are not only on both teams’ web sites, they are also in the archives of their own newspaper. Amazingly poor research!

Larry “Full of Bull” Fedora is correct the NCAA has not legitimized our program like they did to his, UNC-CHeat!

Just to show no hard feelings and to welcome him to north carolina, we should at least invite him to come watch our bowl game since he won’t be busy!

    Yes.

That is not even the most ergergious I have seen. My late grandfather was good friends with Hugh Morton. When Morton published a book of his fvorite photos, my grandfather got an advanced copy from him. It had one of Jimmy V being a guest color commentator with Woody Durham and someone else at the 1982 NCAA final. The caption read, and I am paraphrasing, “Jim Valvano would finally realize his dream years later of a championship when his Wolfpack would cut down the nets in 1993.” I almost threw the book out into the back yard when I read it.

So it looks like a typo: it says 1978-1982 when it should say 1988-1992.

Why don’t you just email the writer to point this out? I’m sure he would correct it.

It happens. I’ve seen plenty of typos in legal briefs filed by lawyers getting paid hundreds of dollars an hour. For that matter, I’ve seen plenty of typos in columns posted on this site.

Yea, PackMan’s example is so much worse because it is not a typo. To say “year’s later” when we negated their win the VERY NEXT YEAR!

    Go pack, let’s get another.

But back on Football. I want so badly to beat them three more in a row because our best streak is 5 as claimed above and i think theirs is 7.
Let’s make it 8!!!! Note: facts not checked. I’m in a hurry.

  8. Baccapacker 04/27/2012 at 9:12 AM #

He will know how legit we are when he becomes the 3rd straight coach at unx to be beaten by TOB.

  9. TruthBKnown Returns 04/27/2012 at 9:13 AM #

I saw this, too, and was considering writing a message to them about it. But I knew a lot of other people would beat me to the punch. And it appears I was correct!

Pack85EE, do you really think the league and the officials would let that happen (an 8-game winning streak)?

I emailed a high profile local writer a couple years ago about a simple mistake he’d made, trying to be helpful, saying we had played football at Maryland in a year we played them in Raleigh. He responded simply: “Thanks for the note, but we disagree on this,” like the location of the game was disputable.

I remember wearing my “And the beat goes on….5 in a row” shirt when I was a senior in highschool in the spring of 93′. Was so excited to be going to State that fall and continue the tradition. Unfortunately we lost the next five. oh well.

  13. LRM 04/27/2012 at 9:54 AM #

^It’s worse than you remembered. We lost the next seven.

… doesn’t want to legitimize our program …

Somebody ought to legitimize the N&O. Good grief.

Let’s cut Carter a little bit of slack. He is a State grad after all. One of the better sports writers The Technician had from my days.

My definition of “typos” differs from yours somewhat I think. To me, a typo is something like a misspelling or a missing/duplicated word. Should ideally still be caught before going to print, but obviously isn’t always.

OTOH, getting basic facts wrong (such as stating a five year span and missing the mark by a full decade) is nothing but a failure to check one’s facts. Again, as you said, it does happen. But when one is being paid and has paid staffers, it shouldn’t.

Even the pic in the N&O has him holding a can of Red Bull. He must own stock in that stuff……

I think that he pulled the stats from a place that often check. I went and looked and the data does show it as he indicates, however, it is wrong.

    From here:

http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/acc/north_carolina_state/index.php go down to the “by opponents”

to here and choose unc-ch to get here:

    http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/acc/north_carolina_state/opponents_records.php?teamid=2279

it seems to have a lot of the data wrong in that table by opponent, but the yearly data for State seems right.

Sorry to get off subject. Lutz has talked to Va Tech about their opening, if they offer he is gone. This would be a big loss. Hope he does not take Moxley with him. Nothing is ever easy at NC State.

Now that just sucks! My dislike for turkey-burg just doubled!

  21. highstick 04/27/2012 at 12:40 PM #

Oldwolf…check the data warehouse and tell me what happened to the 1967 game with South Carolina. I looked the other day and it didn’t even list a game. I find that odd since SC was still in the ACC and we would have played everyone at that time.

  22. GoldenChain 04/27/2012 at 12:41 PM #

The same article was in the observer.
I however, would like to address the comments.

Funny, seems like I remember the most recent holder of his job making some comments….when will these guys ever learn?! (I know, NEVER)

  23. runwiththepack 04/27/2012 at 12:47 PM #

Maybe the N&O/Tarheels don’t count the 12-9 victory, since there was no time showing on the clock when NCSU hit that monster yard field goal to win the game.
Did i get that right. that’s how i remember it, listening to it on the radio as I was driving.
Remember, these are tarheel fans we’re dealing with.

“Is it asking too much for our “home-town” paper to get basic, easy-to-check facts correct?”

When the “home-town” paper is the News & Observer, “yes”.

Journalism died years ago… it’s folly to expect a local sycophantic rag staffed by liberal hacks to buck the trend. Accept it for what it is and it won’t aggravate you.

  25. runwiththepack 04/27/2012 at 1:33 PM #

    listen to tj.

Still, it’s cathartic to give the N&O a little hell when time allows.

And it still sucks that the hometown newspaper ISN’T the hometown newspaper.
