Weekend Hoops Open Thread – Murray State delivers

4:10pm Update
Murray State was unimpressive, but they eeked out a 2 point win over Tennessee State that insured that the Ohio Valley Conference will only receive NCAA Tournament bid.

Original Entry
First order of business – congrats to former Pack assistant Eddie Biedenbach, as he takes UNC-A to a second straight NCAAT.

We can also track bubble and Pack resume related games. So far, one bad thing has happened (UConn over Pitt). The asshole Huskies have a good enough RPI that they are likely in for sure now (and ESPN’s lackeys are already spouting excuses about poor wittle Calhoun’s back). WVU beat South Florida, which is probably neutral (unless you’re WV Wolf).

Very big games this afternoon, especially Northwestern at Iowa at 2:30. I can’t cheer against a team that has NEVER made the field, but the Mildcats really need a W. Also the Ohio Valley final – Murray State would get an at-large bid if they lose.

Even though Miami is also battling for a bid…the Pack really needs them to win. Our worst resume line is record against the Top 50. Miami getting to T50 status makes that much, much better.

It has to be the first game this year Mason has 3 fouls in first half.

  2. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 8:28 PM #

OK, that 6 or 7 seed is starting to look pretty good. Anything but the 5 (extra game, still in Holes’ bracket).

  3. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 8:31 PM #

I don’t think Belmont has any shot. Not really sure about the Colonial, maybe Drexel gets in regardless, think VCU has to win the tourney. But not really sure.

Hey, did you know that Carolina and Duke’s respective campuses are only eight miles apart? Twice every year everybody becomes a geography expert. How come in the fall they never talk about how much D-1 football suck can fit into those eight miles?

That’s what you get for leaving the sound on. I will be so glad when this game is over, and am quite happy it’s not “another classic.”

I hope I can stay up late enough to watch the West Coast Conference games (strategically, root against San Francisco, the other three semifinalists are already in), those games are fun to watch.

  6. Wufpacker 03/03/2012 at 8:46 PM #

Good point re: the sound. Sides of brackets notwithstanding, I hope to God that Duke doesn’t stage a comeback at this point. Can’t stand the thought of hearing about it for weeks (months? years?) to come.

All this stuff about other bubble teams is interesting, but if State plays at Blacksburg like they did here last Wednesday, I think they’re in big trouble. Remember, Miami was a 5-footer away from taking the lead with 15 seconds to go, and had that shot gone down, I believe the Hurricanes would not be a bubble team now.

The Pack simply hasn’t played well since the 11-minute mark of the Duke game. They have looked at times uninspired and have had defensive lapses, plus they still don’t show much confidence on the free throw line when they really need points.

I don’t think that this particular team likes the challenge of playing on the road. I truly hope they can start a nice winning streak tomorrow, but I’ve seen little since February 16th that makes me think they will.

I laugh at Dickie Vs diatribe about Duke “almost being 15-0” at home. Media conviently forgets Belmont, Virgina, NC State, and Virginia Tech. I can make a good case that Duke had a better chance of being 9-6 than 15-0.

I don’t have a good feeling about tomorrow either. But it’s fine to track bubble teams whether it helps us or not.

I think we played really well against the Holes. The fact that they still beat us rather handily…don’t want to play them anymore. So at least now if we lose tomorrow, we will be in the Duke/FSU bracket and maybe can make an interesting run.

I can’t be happy for a Hole win, but after that travesty pulled against us…I’m quite happy to see Duke systematically and embarrassingly destroyed on their home floor.

Still can’t comprehend how ANYONE beat the Holes by 33, let alone FSU.

Perhaps this is some of my “old fogeyness” bleeding through, but I get really tired of hearing about “regular season championships”.

Maybe Mr. Amile Jefferson saw the Duke/UNX game and does not want to play for Duke

Run with the Pack, or fall down on purpose with the Devils? 🙂

Has the KU Jayhawk always worn shoes?

  15. Marvin 03/03/2012 at 9:56 PM #

Am I supposed to cheer for Texas b/c we beat them, or KU b/c according to ESPN they’re one of the last four in, and we’re one of the first four out? Help me understand.

“Perhaps this is some of my “old fogeyness” bleeding through, but I get really tired of hearing about “regular season championships”.”

AMEN. Those do not and never have existed in ACC Hoops.

  17. 61Packer 03/03/2012 at 9:59 PM #

    Texas = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  18. Texpack 03/03/2012 at 10:12 PM #

We are really close to being in the field. I think we can get there with two wins in the tourney if we win @VT.

Regardless if you are an ABC or an ABD or an ABD&C fan, Duke will have a real chip on their shoulder in their game on Friday. They will feel the need for re-establishing their manhood.

    BTW,

Has anybody EVER seen a coach NOT talk to the “designated” reporter and send his assistant over? Mikey looked like he had a case of the trots and needed to get to john to keep from crapping in his Duke Blue undies.

I would have LOVED to have heard Bobby Knight call that game instead of Vitalle….

Hope the pack gets THEIR head in gear tomorrow and does everything they can to further THEIR cause.

Then, you just gotta roll with the punches as to how the OTHER games go.

  20. Wufpacker 03/03/2012 at 10:16 PM #

Too bad they can’t both lose. Two of my more hated non-conference teams. Jayhawks should rot in hell for the Danny Manning issue alone, and Texas is the Carolina of the southwest. I mean, what’s not to hate? Plus, Mack Brown is in the house.

  21. Wufpacker 03/03/2012 at 10:22 PM #

CBSSports.com has front page pics up from the Duke/Carolina game. Do they now legally have to pay royalties to ESPN for using copyrighted trademarks? (I’m implying that ESPN owns all rights to ANY use of Duke and/or Carolina images, for those in Faison….tip of the hat to GC).

  22. Wulfpack 03/03/2012 at 10:26 PM #

K never speaks to reporters at the half. Collins has been doing those for years. Duke got punked, and I agree they will be out for blood at the ACCs. UNC is most certainly Final Four caliber if not better.

  23. blpack 03/03/2012 at 10:28 PM #

My guess is the Jayhawk can’t fly, so needs the shoes.
Hated to hear the holes win, but I’m still thinking we won’t see them in the Final Four. Who knows? We don’t match up well with the holes, but they go through the motions in the ACCT until the finals. Maybe…

Was doing some web-mining and found this. It’s a few years old, from Esquire of all places, but I didn’t remember hearing about it.

    http://www.esquire.com/the-side/feature/college-basketball-history-2009

What caught my attention was that despite being number two on the list, they never say what the “violation” was that kept the ’73 team on the sidelines, while going into a fair amount of detail for the other schools’ issues. Perceptions suck…..we must have gotten the most fricking negative mileage out of two of the more tame “scandals” ever to occur in college sports, while the fracking factory in Chapel Hill continues to churn out its product despite a big F you to the NCAA.

How did Karl Hess not eject Mrs. Plumlee and Doc Rivers for questioning his calls and “inciting” the crowd?? Also, did anyone else read Roy’s lips in the second half when he yelled instructions to a player and ended his rant with “g#dda*&it”?? Goshdarnit, I don’t frickin’ call people out for cussing unless they make a point to tell the media that they don’t ever cuss because it sets a bad example for the kids. What a hypocrite. I liked him better when he was in Kansas. Go Pack!!!!
