Weekend Hoops Open Thread – Murray State delivers

4:10pm Update
Murray State was unimpressive, but they eeked out a 2 point win over Tennessee State that insured that the Ohio Valley Conference will only receive NCAA Tournament bid.

Original Entry
First order of business – congrats to former Pack assistant Eddie Biedenbach, as he takes UNC-A to a second straight NCAAT.

We can also track bubble and Pack resume related games. So far, one bad thing has happened (UConn over Pitt). The asshole Huskies have a good enough RPI that they are likely in for sure now (and ESPN’s lackeys are already spouting excuses about poor wittle Calhoun’s back). WVU beat South Florida, which is probably neutral (unless you’re WV Wolf).

Very big games this afternoon, especially Northwestern at Iowa at 2:30. I can’t cheer against a team that has NEVER made the field, but the Mildcats really need a W. Also the Ohio Valley final – Murray State would get an at-large bid if they lose.

Even though Miami is also battling for a bid…the Pack really needs them to win. Our worst resume line is record against the Top 50. Miami getting to T50 status makes that much, much better.

Yep. We need Murray state and about 10 other schools to win their conference title. It would be nice to have as many of those schools in front of us to win a title as possible.

As for us, we’ re exactly where we’ve been since we lost to ga tech…in need of a signature win and beating our mediocre opponents. Do these 2 things and we’ll get the rpi spike we need for an at-large bid.

Good to see USF go down, assuming they are ahead of us.

  3. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 3:43 PM #

USF definitely ahead of us, and might still be. Of course, so was/is WVU. Which is why I suppose likely a neutral result. Northwestern getting spanked early.

Watching Murray State struggle right now tied at 29

  5. rky 03/03/2012 at 4:09 PM #

Cinci doing their best to keep Nova in the game . . . right now 58-56 Cinci with just under 6 minutes to go. Ooops . . . now a tie game.

  6. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 4:27 PM #

Cincy looking better, Murray looking worse, NW stormed back in a big way.

None of those things are good.

  7. rky 03/03/2012 at 4:33 PM #

wow . . . big break for Murray State with that horrible pass by Tenn St.

  8. rky 03/03/2012 at 4:39 PM #

    And Murray State survives.

  9. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 4:40 PM #

Whew, Murray wins. Do NOT pick those guys in your bracket. They aren’t very good at all.

  10. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 4:47 PM #

Iowa is coming back. Again…I really don’t want a Pack bid at NW’s expense. Those poor, long-suffering, egghead bastards.

  11. Texpack 03/03/2012 at 4:57 PM #

I will take a Pack bid even at The Vatican’s expense.

  12. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 5:02 PM #

Iowa sure has some scarily unattractive fans.

  13. choppack1 03/03/2012 at 5:06 PM #

I refuse to feel pity for any northwestern fans. Tennessee st fans deserve much more pity.

The Missouri Valley is right now a two bid league (Wichita State, Creighton). Right now, Illinois State within 1 of Wichita, very late in the semifinals.

  15. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 5:15 PM #

NW wins. Illinois State with the ball, and can shoot for the win (down 1, 18 seconds left).

  16. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 5:18 PM #

Alabama losing by 8 to Ole Miss. Not sure the Tide are a lock. Illnois State up 1 with 0.9 seconds left. Wow.

  17. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 5:22 PM #

Wichita goes down. If Evansville beats Creighton (they already have once), a bubble slot is eliminated.

  18. Texpack 03/03/2012 at 5:25 PM #

The Dance Card has ‘Bama 20 slots ahead of us in lock territory

  19. blpack 03/03/2012 at 5:28 PM #

We’ll be Creighton fans tomorrow, I giving them the win today which is waaay premature.

  20. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 6:11 PM #

Colorado State in a very tight game with Air Force. Rams look shaky if they lose.

  21. MrPlywood 03/03/2012 at 6:45 PM #

I don’t know why you guys even bother. State will run the table next week and determine their own fate 🙂

  22. rky 03/03/2012 at 6:54 PM #

CO State, like NC State, is headed in a much more positive direction regardless of if they make the Dance or not. Nice to see!

Here’s the “good surprise” – Seton Hall getting demolished by DePaul. They are totally not closing well.

Creighton murdering Evansville, so the MVC might stay a two bid league. Watching the blues with the volume off. Still want to vomit. Flipping elsewhere quite a bit.

  24. WeAreCured 03/03/2012 at 8:21 PM #

If Belmont loses to a sub .500 Florida Gulf Coast, which they are at the moment, they wouldn’t get a bubble at large bid would they?

  25. WeAreCured 03/03/2012 at 8:25 PM #

Also, are 2 teams expected to come out of the CAA? If VCU doesn’t win the conference tournament, did they buy enough goodwill from their run last year to get in, hovering in the high 50s of the RPI?
