Shew!! NC State downs NCAA bound Virginia

Stay tuned to this thread for more updates in real time.

In the meantime, please link media websites and twitter accounts discussing the NCAA Tournament and bubble analysis here.

Tim Brando just tweeted

NCST should be in the NCAAs! This one should get them in.

After the Wolfpack’s win today, CBSSports.com’s front page showed the following:

CBS’ Eye on Basketball blog had this:

Heading into the ACC tournament, it looked like two wins might get it done for the Wolfpack. After their win over Virginia in the quarterfinals, have they done enough to get a bid? NC State now has at least two top-50 wins, as Texas rose into that category with its win over Iowa State. A two-game sweep of Miami (Fl.) also helps. Throw in the fact the Wolfpack are 9-5 away from home – including 4-1 on neutral courts – and one can make the case for them. On the negative side are two sub-100 losses and the 2-8 record against the top 50. An upset win over North Carolina would certainly lock up a bid, but this one might do it.

Wow! I survived the game in Phillips Arena. But my nerves were a wreck. Can we please learn how to make free throws. The game would have been over long before it was. Howell has to be the worst at the line. Do they not work with him to improve his ability at the line. But again we won, and advance, as many doubted we would. A win against the holes would be wonderful. It was quite disqusting to sit among some many of them. I thought I had died and gone to the land of the smurfs. Would love to shut them up tomorrow. Go Pack!

Sid never won more than 20 in a season or lost fewer than 14. Gott will beat both of those this year.
Herb won 22 once (year 10) and 23 once (year 6).

Gott’s got 22 in his first year. I want at least two more wins to get a bad taste out of our collective mouths.

i say we play UNC on defense with the same strategy that we had at the RBC…heavy zone…protects our bigs from foul trouble and forces Marshall to shoot like he did before for them to win…

if no Henson…CJL should be able to go to work on offense…they cannot put Zeller on him and even risk the fouls…

  4. swamppack 03/09/2012 at 6:35 PM #

Yes the HEART was there today, has been for the three games leading up to today but their HEART especially showed through in today’s game.. Even with the officiating again not allowing the Pack to shine fully, they said the heck with it and took the win anyway.

The play where CJL ripped the ball out of Scott’s hands on the baseline showed me something I have not seen since Jules played for us. Proud of you Pack!!!

And by the way, there is no way the officials will allow Zeller to get into foul trouble tomorrow. Discouraging, but it is what it is.

re: Calvin – I remember some angst from a few who were worried that the “Calvin” experiment (I’m referring to Gott using his given name as opposed to CJL) would backfire and Gott would lose Leslie. It would seem that concern has been put to rest.

I really like the way Calvin heads back down the court after a make or miss, without looking to the refs. He’s just playing now.

Joey Bracket’s sheet from this morning (before our win:

    ON THE BUBBLE
    Last Four In
    Washington
    Mississippi State
    Drexel
    Seton Hall

    First Four Out
    Tennessee
    Northwestern
    NC State
    Miami

    Next Four Out
    Iona
    Arizona
    Saint Joseph’s
    Oregon

I just pulled up the resume sheets for the six teams ahead of us on espn. Of all those six teams, the only two that you can even make an argument as having as good a resume as us are Seton Hall and Tennessee. The rest are just jokes.

I think that we are in, and I think there is a decent chance we don’t have to play in Dayton.

I wonder if Harrow is regretting his decision now.

  8. Avid109 03/09/2012 at 6:45 PM #

I’m impressed with this team. They are playing with a great deal of heart, and their composure is light-years ahead of where it was in years past.

can we comment on Lo Brown and his play during the tourny…?

    averaging over 13 points…nearly 4 rebounds…2.5 steals…and 8 assists to only 3 TOs…

floor general…he is leading this team in front of his home crowd…

  10. MrPlywood 03/09/2012 at 6:53 PM #

re: Harrow – I don’t know about him, but I’m not. This is a different team with Harrow here.

  11. BladenWolf 03/09/2012 at 6:57 PM #

I absolutely am reveling in these comments. Maybe it’s the Michelob Ultra. Gentlemen…this same team was 15-16 last year. Minus it’s starting PG, Gottfried and staff have coached this team to 21-11 and the semi-finals of the ACC tourney.

Awesome win! We should be in good shape to get in. With our wins vs. the top 50, that was what people were holding against us. This team has really stepped up when it had to in the last week. Not pretty, but the result is certainly.

  17. STLPack01 03/09/2012 at 7:23 PM #

As far as tonight’s bubble rooting interests:

I think we need to root for Miami. We NEED those two extra top 50 wins.
Root for Oregon State against Arizona
Root for Ole Miss against Tennessee
    Root for Dayton against Xavier
San Diego St. over Colorado St.
Cal over Colorado (to keep someone extra from the Pac12 from slipping in)
Long Beach State over UC Irvine
    Louisiana Tech over Nevada
I say Texas over Mizzou. We’re riding Texas as our best win and them beating Mizzou could help us.

  18. wufpup76 03/09/2012 at 7:28 PM #

^STL, we need Long Beach to WIN their conference tourny. Otherwise they may snipe an at-large. One bid league unless LBSU loses – then who knows.

Possibly the same scenario w/ Nevada – though I doubt they make it should they lose.

The nightime “other games” thread is open.

  20. NelsonHall97 03/09/2012 at 7:30 PM #

Love the heart we showed today! Great win. The faces of the UNX fans at work after we won were priceless. They admitted they had rather play Virginia than the Pack. Let’s go out and make it a game tomorrow!

  21. STLPack01 03/09/2012 at 7:31 PM #

@Wufpup – OK, I’ll grant you that. LBS has the better tourney resume, so we need them to win their tourney. Thanks for the catch.

^TROLL: I rarely post but love to read the often crazy comments and it’s time to put an end to an old one. Gottfried’s very first great coaching move was to see Ryan Harrow for what he was and more importantly what he could be (problem) at NCSU. Make no mistake, Harrow was asked to sit down and discuss the future of NCSU basketball. After that meeting he was asked to find somewhere else to continue his collegiate career. This story was really never told as to not disrespect the young Harrow. So Harrow may be wishing that meeting went differently but there was no decision on Harrow’s behalf to regret. I knew that day that Mrs. Yow had made a good hire.

Congratulations to Coach Gottfried, his staff and players on a great comeback season. Two more wins to go. Nothing could be finer than beating Carolina.

  24. WolftownVA81 03/09/2012 at 10:18 PM #

Big big win for the Pack today. I would have bet we were out of it after the Clemson loss. Congrats to our coaches and players. Gott should have been selected COY.

  25. wolfpack4ever 03/10/2012 at 1:18 PM #

I was not it the “Wolfpack section” yesterday, but it just did not look like we traveled well to Atlanta. However, those of us that were there certainly came away impressed with this team and the coaching staff. Increased skill level, fortitude and a great staff plus heart and desire to gut it out for the win.

We overcame a weak game by Scott Wood and poor free throw shooting to pull out a great win. I feel that we are definitely in the NCAA tournament now for sure.

However, we are a seven man rotation. This is our 3rd game and we are going to have tired legs. After watching the holes in person in game one, we are nowhere near athletic enough. We will have to play near perfect and they will have to be sub-par. Plus, no way in H#!! that we get a fairly officiated game from refs that had KH for Karl Hess taped on their shoes. Great win on day 2, but just not a good feeling about today.

    Go Pack!!
    Go Pack!!!
