NC State earns 11th seed in Midwest Region!!! [11 PM Update]

Congratulations to first year head coach, Mark Gottfriend and his NC State Wolfpack for earning an at-large berth to the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament!! Gottfried takes the Wolfpack program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season and joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as first-year coaches to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament.

NC State earned an 11th seed in the Midwest region and will play Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. If State were to win on Friday the Wolfpack would advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Belmont on Sunday.

CBS really toyed with WolfpackNation when the network waited to announce NC State as the LAST of the 68 teams in the field. (Link) In reality, the Wolfpack was not even a part of the ‘Last 4’ in the field; State was ultimately seeded No. 42 overall, ahead of Texas, California, South Florida, BYU (in order).

The selection also committee announced that Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada and Drexel were the first four for whom the bubble burst this year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference ultimately got five teams in the dance, with NC State joining rival, #1 seeded UNC-CH in the same region! Duke, Florida State, and Virginia also were included. Virginia’s 10th seed match-up with 7th seeded Florida looks to be a tough match up for the Cavs.

The intensity with which NC State fans have been sweating our position on the proverbial ‘bubble’ has increased to a fever pitch in recent days. But, if you were following SFN this afternoon you would have seen some ‘inside information’ that hit around 5:15pm that would have helped you breathe a little easier. (Link)

The Midwest region seeds are as follows: 1 UNC, 2 Kansas, 3 Georgetown, 4 Michigan, 5 Temple, 6 San Diego State, 7 St Mary’s, 8 Creighton, 9 Alabama, 10 Purdue, 11 NC State, 12 Cal/USF, 13 Ohio (coached by former NC State assistant, John Groce), 14 Belmont, 15 Detroit, 16 Lamar/Vermont.

This evening, Dick Vitale picked his sleepers as defined by 5th seeds or higher — UCONN, Memphis, Vanderbilt and NC State.

11 PM Update: Game time set.

@Pack Pride‏
State’s game on Friday at 12:40 will be called by Tim Brando and Mike Gminski. The game will be on TruTV.

Congrats to Coach G and the team!

I was on pins and needles as Clark Kellogg got to the end of the brackets without mentioning our name. But it appears we got a winnable draw and 2nd round prospects look decent.

I’m happy for the team. Go Pack!

    Those fellas love Gott.

I was in the car, had to be out. I was hoping I hadn’t missed the announcement and JUST caught it as I got back in after my last stop. They had some nice things to say about Gott and the team.

I was told Amile Jefferson is to soon make his decision. Maybe our success will reel him in, and we will have 4 McDonalds All Americans. The future is bright for men’s basketball at NC State.

Anybody know what the heck TruTV is?

  11. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 10:48 PM #

    TruTv = Not Reality. Actuality.

  12. Sweet jumper 03/11/2012 at 10:50 PM #

    TruTV used to be CourtTV.

  13. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 10:53 PM #

I swear that had to be the longest 40 minutes of their lives! I’m sure they were looking up all the predictions before today and thought we were out after we didn’t get the last play-in game. Only State would be the LAST team they announced in. I thought we were out!

  14. JohnGalt78 03/11/2012 at 10:54 PM #

Geez, so it’s a network…..I assume available on TWC or Direct TV….I hope…

  15. WolfWall 03/11/2012 at 10:57 PM #

TruTV is available on everything, owned by TWC actually, and quite a popular channel.

    Woops, double post

“Those fellas love Gott”. What’s love Gott to do with it? A whole lot, and if we keep our focus and intensity it could carry us for a good ride!

I’m not just thrilled to be celebrating an NCAAT berth right now, I’m thrilled that I’m celebrating a team that plays such a good brand of ball!

  18. JSRy2k 03/11/2012 at 11:00 PM #

ScottieJ2000, thanks for the ’83 video link. I had never watched a highlight video like that. It really puts life in the vision of the Pack on THE national stage.

  19. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 11:15 PM #

@JSRy2k Gives me a warm feeling and a tear in my eye everytime! I hope this team is the next Cardiac Pack!

  20. StateFans 03/12/2012 at 6:27 AM #

    Is TruTV on AT&T UVerse?

  21. LifeLongWolf 03/12/2012 at 6:40 AM #

“…hope this team is the next Cardiac Pack!”

Whilst I appreciate and agree with the sentiment, my heart can’t take that. Beat ’em all by 50!

  22. GAWolf 03/12/2012 at 8:26 AM #

A hahaha. That video above is fantastc!!!!!!

Coach Gott looked like I felt which was about the time my wife looked at me and said, “OMG are you about to cry?”. With lip quivering I said, “shut it.”.

So awesome. That video gives me goosebumps. I could not be more happy for everyone in that room.

  23. BJD95 03/12/2012 at 8:38 AM #

Yay re Brando. Boo re Gminski. Interesting that the Tobacco Road trio all play on Friday, pretty much in a row. And the Holes get stuck with a weekday afternoon slot? When was the last time that happened?

  24. TruthBKnown Returns 03/12/2012 at 10:32 AM #

If nothing else, this just vindicates the hiring of Debbie Yow and Coach Gott, and the replacement of Sid (and dare I say… Herb?)

We were supposed to accept table scraps, but we didn’t. And now we sit tied for 4th in the conference, SHOULD have played in the conference championship game, and we’re back in the dance once again.

I’d call that sweet vindication, even if we don’t win a single game in the dance. The Pack may not be “back” quite yet, but the program is back. We’re doing what we need to do to GET back, and that’s something we haven’t been able to say in a long, long time.
