NC State earns 11th seed in Midwest Region!!! [11 PM Update]

Congratulations to first year head coach, Mark Gottfriend and his NC State Wolfpack for earning an at-large berth to the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament!! Gottfried takes the Wolfpack program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season and joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as first-year coaches to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament.

NC State earned an 11th seed in the Midwest region and will play Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. If State were to win on Friday the Wolfpack would advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Belmont on Sunday.

CBS really toyed with WolfpackNation when the network waited to announce NC State as the LAST of the 68 teams in the field. (Link) In reality, the Wolfpack was not even a part of the ‘Last 4’ in the field; State was ultimately seeded No. 42 overall, ahead of Texas, California, South Florida, BYU (in order).

The selection also committee announced that Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada and Drexel were the first four for whom the bubble burst this year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference ultimately got five teams in the dance, with NC State joining rival, #1 seeded UNC-CH in the same region! Duke, Florida State, and Virginia also were included. Virginia’s 10th seed match-up with 7th seeded Florida looks to be a tough match up for the Cavs.

The intensity with which NC State fans have been sweating our position on the proverbial ‘bubble’ has increased to a fever pitch in recent days. But, if you were following SFN this afternoon you would have seen some ‘inside information’ that hit around 5:15pm that would have helped you breathe a little easier. (Link)

The Midwest region seeds are as follows: 1 UNC, 2 Kansas, 3 Georgetown, 4 Michigan, 5 Temple, 6 San Diego State, 7 St Mary’s, 8 Creighton, 9 Alabama, 10 Purdue, 11 NC State, 12 Cal/USF, 13 Ohio (coached by former NC State assistant, John Groce), 14 Belmont, 15 Detroit, 16 Lamar/Vermont.

This evening, Dick Vitale picked his sleepers as defined by 5th seeds or higher — UCONN, Memphis, Vanderbilt and NC State.

11 PM Update: Game time set.

State’s game on Friday at 12:40 will be called by Tim Brando and Mike Gminski. The game will be on TruTV.

“No Andrew. Raleigh IS Wolfpack Country”

If the team plays the defense they played in the ACC tournament then we are in good shape. If they bring the heart too then we are in better shape! I would LOVE to get another crack at UNC!

Couple interesting things I’ve noticed this evening…a lot of folks are picking Michigan to get bumped in a huge upset in round 1 because they “live and die by the three.”. Weave and heave will never do well in this tournament format and everyone knows it.

To the contrary, we are picked as a sleeper talking about our inside presence mixed wit capable outside shooting. As in…. We now play this game called basketball. Thank you, Gott and staff.

What an interesting matchup with Georgetown should it happen. The last time we played them we got bounced by a terrible call that pretty much ended the last of the glory years of Wolfpack Basketball.

If given the chance, can we exorcise the demons that have haunted us for 25 years?

    What a relief.
I am very happy about this. I did not even dream this team could make it after seeing them last year. Gott has done an awful lot turning that mess around.
This summer can be about improving instead of fixing bad habits.

I admit I was holding my breath at the last but was hopeful not being in the bubble teams was a good omen. At first glance I have no real issues with the teams or the seedings.

A big congrats to the team and the coaching staff. Lots of other stuff of late with the Hess situation and the fallout from it – something the ACC office should address in the off season.

My other thought is just maybe the ACC wasn’t as weak as expected when the season started. Props to FSU for the game they played today – in my opinion they are a tourney sleeper and maybe the Pack is as well.

Didn’t we play G’Town last year in one of those preseason tourneys? IIRC, we may have had the lead at halftime.

From a gambling POV, I am pissed that my Final Four sleeper (Wichita State) would have to get through Kentucky in the round of 16. But the Wolfpack perspective is much more important, and I love that more than words can express!

looks like Duke will be smashed by Notre Dame in the 2nd round.

  10. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 8:25 PM #

We played them for 25 minutes then it got out of hand. Score was GU 40 NCSU 37 at half.

Excellent interview by the Gottfather. Then again I didn’t expect anything else. I am buying a couple of gallons of grape Kool Aid this week and drinking every last drop!

We are back and I am speechless at the amount of work + improvement this team has done. Yow & Gott had the balls to buy out our crappy cream puff schedule and we are already reaping the benefits!!!!

Side note, let’s not forget the Dorcy situation. Any other coach (not just US) would have been T’d up, ejected or fined for saying what he did. The ACC better pony up a punishment for this. I’m sorry but this to me trumps the bad calls because it is NOT up for debate. He said it and the media vouched for it!

Drink lots of Kool Aid this week…

Can we give Lowe some credit for bringing in Howell, Wood, Brown, and Leslie? thanks dude.

  13. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 8:27 PM #

I will readily acknowledge that we will have a size advantage in the lowpost…but Woo and Howell are going to have a very hard time defending guys that are MUCH quicker than they are. I will be interested to see if AJ ends up playing more minutes than usual. n

“My other thought is just maybe the ACC wasn’t as weak as expected when the season started.”

No, it wasn’t. I’ve said it beofre but we owe a lot to the likes of FSU, UVA, STATE, and Miami for upholding our end of the bargain. Clemson and Maryland also improved as the year went on. Exciting times on the horizon with all of these very solid coaches. If VT fires Greenberg, there could be another. And I really wish Wake would move on without Bzdelik – but to his credit they improved marginally this year and have a solid recruiting class coming in. But he just does not do it for me, or most Wake fans for the matter.

  15. eas 03/11/2012 at 8:31 PM #

Make no mistake SDSU is quick and well coached. They make up for a lot of size by playing the way they do. It’s like playing Duke without Plum “g” boys.

  16. Wulfpack 03/11/2012 at 8:31 PM #

    Thanks, Sid.

almost everyone has georgetown making the elite 8. I guess they’re pretty good if most think they beat Kansas.

  18. motorhead 03/11/2012 at 8:33 PM #

I predict that I might be sick Thursday or Friday.

  19. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 8:34 PM #

When I’ve watched Georgetown play, I’ve really not been impressed.

I honestly think the winner of our game (yet another coinflip) could do a significant amount of damage. I’m not really sold on Kansas, either.

@70Wolf “Any reason that noone is asking Gott directly what the ref said to him. ”

Gott was asked in the post-game yesterday, “Will you be sending Brian Dorsey a Christmas card?” His response was along the lines of “Can’t answer that, I’ll get fined”. Not many knew at the time what the question really meant…

  21. redwolf92 03/11/2012 at 8:39 PM #

Dayton and Columbus are awful close…someone was playing with us again

  22. Khan 03/11/2012 at 8:41 PM #

^^ That was a stupid question. Period. But you’re mixing questions and answers. He was asked that question and he said, “I’m not going to answer that.” He was basically acknowledging how stupid of a question it was.

Anyway, great day for the Pack. Good job by Gott and the staff, and great job by the players for buying in improving through the year.

    WE ARE BACK!!!! GO PACK!

  24. blpack 03/11/2012 at 9:01 PM #

Just about couldn’t take it. So very happy we got in and in clean, no play-in game. I think we got a good draw. Won’t be easy, but winnable. Great days ahead for the Pack!

  25. ryebread 03/11/2012 at 9:35 PM #

Great news for the Pack! I’m happy to see the hard work that the players, coaches and support staff put in be rewarded.

Honestly, I had the preseason record nailed — 20-11 (9-7). I thought we’d be a bubble team, but I thought our bubble would burst and we’d be looking at the NIT. Boy, I was really happy to be wrong. With the win against UVA and the close loss to UNC (the latter convinced me that we were definitely in), we went to the ACC tournament and played our way in. Heck yeah!

The first round game is intriguing. Of the 6s that we could play, SD State is the one that I think we have the best chance of beating. I don’t think they’re as good as they were last year, though they did beat both Cal and Arizona (by a point). They are athletic and do defend. I think we can work our size advantage inside as long as we don’t turn it over.

I don’t know what to think of Georgetown. I don’t think they’re as good as they were last year when they handled us fairly easily. One day they can lose by a bucket @ Syracuse or hammer Notre Dame at home, but then the next day they can have a double digit loss to an awful Pitt team, or get blasted by Seton Hall.

Other ACC teams? UVA is out in round one. They’re out of gas and Florida is coming on strong. I think Duke beats ND and UNC and FSU get out of the first weekend to put 3 ACC teams in the Sweet 16.

BJD: I too had Witchita State down as a sleeper because they’re possession oriented, play defense well and can shoot. I think they got an awful first round match up though. VCU came on strong down the stretch and I think their style of play will give the Shockers fits. I’m going with VCU in that first round game.

My pick it win it all is Kentucky. Along with UNC, they have the most talent. Cal will have them laser focused after the loss to Vandy. I don’t like the squid, but I think this is the year that it all comes together.
