Wolfpack does what it had to do … win

At this stage of the game it’s not about style points. It’s not about shooting percentages, margins of victory or any other meaningless numbers in a postgame boxscore.

When you’re the N.C. State basketball team, doing whatever you can to keep your NCAA tournament bubble from bursting, the only thing that matters anymore is the result.

Like Al Davis said: “Just win, baby.”

Hess’ presence felt at ACC tourney, even though he’s not there

Wednesday, word began to leak at Philips Arena that Hess would not work any games during this week’s ACC tournament.

While that may have been good news for State fans still upset over the incident, Hess’ fellow officials clearly weren’t as happy. To show their displeasure, along with their support for their colleague, Jamie Luckie, Mike Eades and Bernard Clinton worked Thursday’s tournament opener between Wake Forest and Maryland with Hess’ initials taped to their shoes.

It was a gesture that didn’t go over well with the State continent. Senior associate athletic director Chris Kingston voiced his concern to league officials, who issued a statement about the situation. None of the referees in Thursday’s other three games repeated the earlier tribute to Hess.

Wolfpack Closes Door On Boston College

1. Philips Arena was virtually empty 15 minutes before Thursday’s opening session began. With North Carolina playing Maryland in the first game Friday, followed by the N.C. State-Virginia matchup, there should be a lot more energy in the arena. Wolfpack fans will clearly be on Maryland’s side, and it’ll be interesting to see if UNC fans root more for Virginia or N.C. State, which needs a win to help its NCAA tournament chances. The Tar Heels appear to match up better against the Wolfpack, but that still might not be enough for the Carolina blue crowd to get behind the Wolfpack’s cause.

NC State clinging to bubble

If NC State doesn’t make the field, look no further than the lack of wins against the top teams in the ACC as the culprit. Coach Mark Gottfried has been working the media circuit to talk up his squad and the conference, parsing through RPI and strength of schedule. As he should, since those are the only things keeping NC State in the conversation.

However, going 0-5 against conference leaders is a glaring hole in the résumé. It’s classic NC State S…uh..stuff that Miami is slotted above the Pack in the projections despite getting swept in league play. The Hurricanes have what NC State doesn’t, which are wins over Florida State and Duke.

Joe Ovies (WRALSportsfan.com)
Refs Unlimited

The ACC has no one to blame but themselves for this situation. They committed their first foul the night Hess ejected Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani from the RBC Center. It took the conference several hours to address the matter, and failed to properly do so with a vague explanation involving procedural matters. Their second foul happened the following Monday, where the ACC released a more substantive explanation and public reprimand of Hess. The ACC fouled again when they pulled Hess from NC State’s next home game against Miami and reassigned him to another conference game, which essentially acted as a form of suspension and prolonged the inevitable return.

[snip]

However, I’m not buying the idea Hess was trying to do the ACC any favors. If he didn’t want to take away from the ACC Tournament, Hess would have worked it. All of this mess is a result of his decision.
Is it done? NC State did “Wolfpack Unlimited” and Hess did “Refs Unlimited.” You’d think it was done, but it likely isn’t. Hess will eventually show up in the RBC Center and all of this will be rehashed again.

Friday preview

#4 N.C. State vs. #5 Virginia (2:30, WRAL-TV5, 99.9 FM/620-AM)

In January, the Cavaliers escaped Raleigh with a 61-60 win in which the Wolfpack nearly came all the way back from a 10-point deficit. But, that Virginia team was playing with a lot more confidence than the Wahoos are at this juncture of the season. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack appear to be putting things together at the right time as Scott Wood’s jump shot has returned, thus creating plenty of room for Calvin Leslie and Richard Howell around the basket. As long as Mike Scott doesn’t foul out State’s entire front line, the match ups really favor the Pack.

North Carolina State [21-11 (9-7), RPI: 52, SOS: 19] A win over Boston College obviously doesn’t move the needle, but like so many other bubble teams fighting for those last 12-15 spots above the line (including fellow bubble hopeful Miami), the Wolfpack merely needed to advance and survive and move on to bigger and better challenges, which they will get against Virginia on Friday afternoon. A win there is likewise a must, because this résumé hasn’t changed: The Pack still missed those three big late-season chances against Duke, UNC and Florida State, they’re still 0-8 against the rest of the RPI top 50, still have a marginal RPI themselves, and their best nonconference win is still over Texas. Lots of work to do in Atlanta yet.

Field of 68: Rams, Pack live another day; Northwestern’s drought to continue

Stock Up

1. Colorado State. On a day when disastrous performances by bubble teams were the norm, the Rams easily handled a TCU team they’d split with earlier this season. On Friday, they’ll play a San Diego State team that just barely squeezed past Boise State in the Mountain West semifinals.

2. N.C. State. The Wolfpack are barely on the bubble, but their strength of schedule at least keeps them in the conversation. And the easy win against Boston College on Thursday gives them an opportunity to record a meaningful victory against Virginia, another bubble team, on Friday. The Wolfpack lost to the Cavaliers by one point in their only meeting this season.

3. Texas. The Longhorns pulled off the best win of any bubble team on Thursday, upending Iowa State after trailing by four at halftime. Texas plays Missouri on Friday; the Longhorns lost to the Tigers twice this season, but the second time was only by one point, at home.

Most bubble teams lost and lost badly, which did shake up the bottom of the bracket, but I still can’t seem to get Northwestern out of it. South Florida and Seton Hall have the Big East well represented in the play-in games. Washington dropped out again after another bad loss. The same is true for Mississippi State. N.C. State and Texas are in for now.

I e-mailed Debbie Yow the Statefans Nation article and photo of the ref’s near the end of The Maryland game. She replied within 2 minutes of me sending her the e-mail. This was her reply:……”My Name, I am on it. Have been for a couple of hours now. ACC needs to respond to this first. Giving them that chance now.
Cannot open the SFN article on BB…for some unknown reason here in arena.
    Debbie Y.

One minute later I got another e-mail:…”Was able to open it…thanks.”

How GREAT is SHE!!!!…We have a Athletic Director who actually cares what her fans think!!!!

Awesome summary, 1.21! I don’t always find these daily updates useful, but during tournament time and leading up to the post-seasons when there are a lot of teams in motion in the standings this stuff is invaluable!

  5. Texpack 03/09/2012 at 9:10 AM #

The events of yesterday across the country have put us in a win and you are in game today. I don’t think there is a person on this board who wouldn’t have taken a 4 vs 5 game in the ACCT as a one game playoff for a bid when the season started.

The goal is always to play your best ball at Tournamenttime so it was nice to see Wood get hot for the last two games. If we can get CJW back on track we can win the whole ball of wax in Atlanta. GO PACK!

  6. mak4dpak 03/09/2012 at 9:13 AM #

FYI, just wanted to check the BC schedule, and discovered that even though they have not had a good season, they did beat the same FSU team, that beat UNX by 33 points. Nothing is impossible. Go Pack!

4got, even though Phillips Arena is a nice venue, if you watch the local news, as I did Fox 5 here, there was no mention of the ACC tourney, or scores. But lots about local high school basketball. It is as if they are ignoring it. Take it back to NC, where it is appreciated.

  9. Wufpacker 03/09/2012 at 9:17 AM #

A 30 win season is still possible. The goal should be nothing less.

  10. gopack10 03/09/2012 at 9:20 AM #

It is just easier for the State, UNC, Duke, Wake, Clemson, MD, UVA and V-Tech fans to go to the tourney when it is in Carolina.

Phillips is a really nice arena but Tech fans aren’t that passionate about their team in recent years and it is further away from the big basketball schools in the ACC.

On the other hand I live in Atlanta so it does give me the opportunity to see State play twice in the same season. I’ll be on hand today for all four games.

  11. Trout 03/09/2012 at 9:24 AM #

How in the world is Miss State still considered above us in Bracketology? Miss State last 7 games:

    – Georgia, L 68-70
    – @ LSU, L 67-69
    – @ Auburn, L 55-65
    – Kentucky, L 64-73
    – @ Alabama, L 50-67
    – @ South Carolina, W 69-67
    – Arkansas, W 79-59
    – Georgia, L 61-71 SEC Tournament

    RPI 72. SOS 80!

I, too, exchanged emails with AD Yow. She was on top of “it” and doing what was necessary to resolve it. As much as I disagreed with her decision on Coach Lowe, I now believe it was correct and certainly believe that we have one tough “cookie” as an AD and she is STATE, through and through.

Coach G. is a great hire. He is not the re-incarnation of Case, Sloan, Valvano, Robinson (sentiment – not results), etc. However, he has a piece of each of them and I have not had but one small critical thing to say about him.

LOSE THE LIGHT BLUE SHIRTS!. If I did a W-L chart and had his shirt color there, I swear we have more difficulty or lose when he and/or his staff wears that blasphemous color.

    So, there….that is his wart.

Other than that, I am MORE than happy.

GO PACK….play the game of the season today….and then the game of the season tomorrw and beyond.

  13. tuckerdorm1983 03/09/2012 at 9:39 AM #

all this analysis don’t mean skittles on a stick if we don’t win today. It is win today, then probably make it in. Lose and its NIT city baby. You know, I think if we did not make the NCAAT it might make CJL come back for another year and give it another try. Maybe I am crazy.

  14. BJD95 03/09/2012 at 9:44 AM #

Nice arena or not, it’s a city that only cares about UGA football. Why it needs or even wants an ACCT is beyond me.

I think we have a 90 percent shot at a bid if we win today (thanks to Minnesota, Colorado, and the aforementioned Georgia). But just to be sure, it would be nice if St. Joe’s, Arizona, Colorado (Pac 12 may be a one-bid league if Cal beats Oregon State in the final), Marshall, UCF (we want a Memphis-Southern Miss final), Tennessee, and Xavier to lose.

We certainly don’t need all of those things now. Just 1 of 2 would suffice.

  15. Trout 03/09/2012 at 9:46 AM #

^ Win and we are in. Simple as that.

  16. BJD95 03/09/2012 at 9:47 AM #

    Sorry, “1 or 2”

I have no idea how Mississippi State is still being considered. I think the bracketologists are out to lunch on that one, as well as Seton Hall. Those two are essentially the same team. And they are poster children for the kind of teams that absolutely should NOT be rewarded with a bid.

  17. Trout 03/09/2012 at 9:47 AM #

And BJD is right. Atlanta cares about UGA/SEC football first and foremost. Period.

  18. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/09/2012 at 10:02 AM #

    “Eye Test”

These pundits are beyond out to lunch. If you forced them to tell you what was important first, then lay out each teams records/rankings in a blind test, they’d be forced to go back on most of the teams they are putting ahead of us.

Yet when they do the blind test without stating what’s important they always make excuses for SH, MSU, Drexel, Northwestern, etc. so they can put them in. I really do believe Lunardi and a few others just don’t like us.

Whatever they’re smoking it must be some good stuff.

  19. ADVENTUROO 03/09/2012 at 10:05 AM #

Can barely spell BRACKETOLOGY, so here is a question for those that follow it….

If STATE wins today and MIAMI wins tonight, then WHAT happens?

Does VA become a Bubble Team?

Will the ACC STILL only have 4 invites?

Assuming that STATE and MIAMI would NOT be either of the teams playing on Sunday, WHO and HOW MANY get invited?

Texas, according to the stuff I read, moved up last night. I assume that was because they beat a ranked team.

Really heady stuff, and confusing to me….any comments?

  20. ncst8 03/09/2012 at 10:06 AM #

Just wanted to say that I am impressed by what our players have to say. Such a marked difference from what we have heard the past few years…in terms of focus and attitude toward one another. I am really glad this group decided to stay through the transition, and I am really proud of the team and coaches for creating such a different environment in the program. I hope beyond hope that the team wins out through the national title, but No matter what happens today…I am thankful for a pack program to be excited about again.

    Now crush the Hoos!

  21. wolfie91 03/09/2012 at 10:18 AM #

Bracketologists are going to miss some. Miss St. has some decent wins (Vandy, WVU, Bama, TN) but no big marquee win that I can tell. The biggest thing our guys need to do is to focus on one game at a time and just keep winning, not trying to figure out how many wins they need. I hope they are doing that and come out and play hard and play loose. Me, I am quite nervous this morning.

  22. Wufpacker 03/09/2012 at 10:24 AM #

    @Adventuroo,
UVa is pretty much a lock already so they’re safe even after we destroy them today. Our competition is the other bubble teams. The only ACC team we’re competing w/ is Miami, but since we beat them twice and they are currently behind us on the bubble, we’re kinda hoping for them to succeed and piggyback in along with us.

  23. vtpackfan 03/09/2012 at 10:30 AM #

I’m surprised the Bracketology for the 2013 yet. A SAS program run by a couple Professors atUNF, called Dancecard, puts our odds at over 30% right now without any other wins. A W today and it should jump dramaticly.

  24. nav 03/09/2012 at 10:42 AM #

Seth Davis stated that South Florida passes the eye test and should be in but State needs today and likely 1 more win to get in. Has he seen S. Fl. play compared to the the way our team is playing? It’s night and day. State looks like a tourney team playing. S. Fl. does not.

  25. Rochester 03/09/2012 at 10:42 AM #

Illinois fires Bruce Weber. I expect a lot of hand-wringing today. I mean, it’s not like he made 5 NCAA Tournaments in 10 years or anything. Oh, wait, he made it 6 times in 9 years, including a Final Four? How dare they run him out of town!
