Friday Night Revelry/Getting Above the “First Four” Thread

Now that the Pack is 99 percent in the dance…can we skip the Tues/Wed preliminaries? Yes, if everything breaks right.

St Bonaventure’s win helped us, for sure. A Miami win ensures us of 4 Top 50 wins for the season. The hot mess that is the Pac 12 tourney rages onward.

Some games we can now just watch for fun, as we let our heart rates get back to normal. Go Hokies!!

How is virgina not on the bubble. I would even think they could be on the outside looking in. Besides the early season win against Michigan there only quality win was a January win against us…..doesn’t the committee look at how the teams play towards the end of the season

  2. BJD95 03/10/2012 at 12:24 AM #

Jerry Tarkanian sighting, courtside at New Mexico/UNLV. That old bastard is gonna live forever.

  3. BJD95 03/10/2012 at 12:28 AM #

The Michigan win is enough, given their overall RPI #s. They may be down to a 10 seed now, though. Possible they will get some bump (I don’t agree, but committee does do this) for the Brogdon injury, if he will be back.

Colorado on fire early, which would ensure a second Pac 12 bid.

I think there are still 3 very important games left for State’s comfort level:
    Vandy must beat Ole Miss tomorrow;
    Memphis must beat Marshall tomorrow;
No upset in A10 final on Sunday (Xavier or St. Louis must win)

If UMass or the Bonnies pull of an upset in the A10, that eliminates one of the 9 bubble spots. If Marshall beats Memphis, they are a lock, taking one of the bubble spots. If Ole Miss beats Vandy, they may be a lock, which could take another bubble spot.

If none of these things happen, it would be very nice.

I’m think Miami losing is probably a good thing for the Pack. We are directly competing with them for one of the final spots. I’m still not convinced we’re in. Every year on Selection Sunday there is always one team that gets screwed, that everyone is like, “How did Team X not get in with their impressive wins and RPI?” I think FSU was one of those teams a few years back. But we are NC State, we know we would never get screwed…

  6. nouveau wolf 03/10/2012 at 12:31 AM #

For the record, as of 3/9 (no time listed) NCAA page has Miami at 49, followed by Oral Robets, UCF, WVU, Miss, Xavier, then us.

A loss to FSU enough to bounce idle teams up? or Miss 4 spots?

  7. BJD95 03/10/2012 at 12:34 AM #

If alll 3 of those things happened (Marshall, Ole Miss, Bonnies/UMass steal bids), then I would get nervous. But think all 3 have to happen before it bites us. Even then, the bubble could steal one back if Cal wins Pac 12.

  8. WeAreCured 03/10/2012 at 12:40 AM #

I’m still nervous about all of this. I know a lot of people are thinking it’s a 90/10 split of whether or not we get in, but I’m thinking it’s more like 50/50 right now.

  9. WeAreCured 03/10/2012 at 12:50 AM #

Oh yeah, I forgot about the fate of the WAC. If New Mexico State can pull off the upset and beat Nevada in the finals (assuming Nevada beats Louisiana Tech later tonight), it’s likely they will both get in. We need Nevada to win the tourney to ensure there is not a second team from the WAC in the field.

  10. BJD95 03/10/2012 at 12:54 AM #

I am assuming that at least one of Long Beach and Nevada will win. If one doesn’t, they take the Drexel slot. There are 3 other First Four slots, and IMHO, we occupy the most secure one. So all 3 of tomorrow’s possible bad things have to happen to endanger State. Again, IMHO.

    Good night, all!

  11. WeAreCured 03/10/2012 at 12:59 AM #

Let’s just hope that none of them happen. Nighty night.

  12. ScottieJ2000 03/10/2012 at 1:34 AM #

I’m not sold on Nevada getting in if they don’t win their tournament. RPI is 48 BUT SOS is 160 and no wins against Top 50. I think they have to win it all to go to the NCAA tournament. But watch out!!! They are the regular season champions! haha

  13. WeAreCured 03/10/2012 at 1:44 AM #

I’m not sold on it either, but I’d rather them win it like they’re supposed to and not have to worry about it. Lunardi has them in as a 13 seed right now. I would assume a loss to Louisiana Tech would do them in, but a loss in the championship game to a decent New Mexico State team? I’m not sure. It would just be nice to not have to worry about it.

California loses and looks like Nevada is about to lose too. Outside of our game, Today was not as friendly to us as yesterday. Lame.

Let’s hope all this positive talk about us persuades the selection committee or better yet, we beat UNC!

ok, this is my first post, i have been watching this site for years!!!…i am not an alum, i was 11 years old during the run of 83 with jimmy v & i was hooked. i was there as a kid when we lost to murray state in the tourney & it killed me!!…i was at the game at the meadowlands when corch & monroe lost to g-town in the elite 8. i survived the kenny inge years (difficult)…more than most i appreciated the sendek years simply because we were somewhat important, beating uconn etc….HOWEVER!!…watching gottfried hugging zo today after the win made me remember the valvano days. i think we are in no matter what happens tomorrow. sorry it was a long rant but i am tearing up as i am writing it!!……glad to be back in the show!……by the way howell do not dribble the ball….EVER!!!!….& CJ ( Calvin)….please stay!!!

The espn network say Joe Lenardi has us in, and besides that beat the holes today, and it don’t matter what any other team does. Hopefully Henson is out, or at least not up to par. We just have to take it to em, without any studpid fouls, especially foul friendly Howell. And hopefully the refs will lets us play, and call it both ways. And please set screens to get Wood open, as Bullock will be all over him, like last time. Hope the team just realizes and can handle the large and loud holes contingent. Would love to shut em up. Perfect scenario would be a whipping like FSU put on em, but I will take a win regardless of the margin.

  17. Tuffy2 03/10/2012 at 7:57 AM #

Win our game today nothing to worry about. I just don’t get the feeling that we are going to get blown out. I don’t know if any of you feel this way but this team looks like they mean business. I guess we will know around 3pm

I am sick of looking at the scores around the nation and I am going to focus on unc, as I believe THE WOLFPACK IS WILL BE DOING.

  18. lawful 03/10/2012 at 8:18 AM #

    Tuffy, I think we’ll know by 1:30.

So, I’ll ask the resident experts again, there is quite a bit of confidence at this point. Who are we rooting for/against today?

  19. Wufpacker 03/10/2012 at 8:20 AM #

Agreed Tuffy, I have a feeling that we’ll put up a good fight today…at the very least. We seem pretty focused and confident. We lack some polish at times, but we do not lack heart. If Carolina is hitting on all cylinders there’s not much we can do about that, but I also think we’ll have something to say about that….we’ve been play with better intensity on defense as well.

As far as Henson, I hope he plays. I’d much rather have him in there worried about being able to grip the ball and the pain it causes.

So does the Colorado upset now mean that the PAC12 gets in 3 teams – Cal, Washington and the tourney winner?

  21. choppack1 03/10/2012 at 8:38 AM #

    They shouldn’t…uw doesn’t deserve a bid.

  22. wolfie91 03/10/2012 at 8:48 AM #

as of 2am or so, Lunardi had Zona and Colorado in the Next Four Out list. Obviously one of them will be in, and I assume will take WA’s spot, which is currently ahead of us in the Last Four In list. I think he has Cal solidly in, which seems odd to me.

  23. ADVENTUROO 03/10/2012 at 8:55 AM #

    ALL,

FWIW, here are two sites that I have added to my “shortcuts”. The Realtime RPI updates once per day and Joe Lunardi is now updating several times a day.

Caulton Tudor’s article just about nails it. If WOO can get in the groove and we have that little extra spring in our step or swagger and win today, then we don’t have worry about booking flights to Dayton. As one who often traveled to Dayton, it is NOT the place that I would pick for a nice visit, even if you only had to go downtown to see the Pack play.

    Here are the links:

This one is a repeat of what was, I think, posted earlier in case you missed it.

Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda (RE: our “dumb” losses to Clemson and GT) is over. Time to make some HISTORY! GO PACK!

  24. redwolf92 03/10/2012 at 10:29 AM #

As of this morning, we have only one top 50 RPI win (Texas). UVA and Miami are out of RPI 50. Getting a little worried…but, hey, that’s what us Wolfpackers do, right?
