NC STATE BASKETBALL

Caulton Tudor (N&O)
Wood’s back and so is the Pack

The prevailing theory among N.C. State basketball fans for the past several games was that Scott Wood had to resurface at some point.

Those fans were right.

After missing 31 of his last 38 field-goal attempts, the normally accurate junior forward finally was back on target Wednesday night in the RBC Center against Miami.

Although it still may be too late for the Wolfpack to land an NCAA Tournament bid, Wood’s 15 points on five 3-pointers helped key a 77-73 win over Miami – a game that N.C. State absolutely had to take.

N.C. State women rally to beat Florida State, 74-71 at ACC tournament

The N.C. State women’s basketball team had Florida State right where it wanted.

The No. 9 Wolfpack, rallying in the second half and drawing the game close late, thrive in tight games, especially in the ACC tournament.

The Pack pulled out another one in the first round, claiming a 74-71 victory over the Seminoles at Greensboro Coliseum. The Pack moves into the quarterfinals against top-seeded Duke on Friday afternoon.

Thursday’s victory looked familar as the Pack played gritty defense late and made critical shots to get the win.

My analysis of NCSU heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

CBS Sports (thru 2/29)
NCSU 19-11 (8-7)
RPI = 59
SOS (OOC SOS) = 25 (25)
VS RPI
(1-25) = 0-6
(1-50) = 0-8
(1-100) = 6-8

Stat Sheet (thru 3/1)
NCSU 19-11 (8-7)
RPI = 59
SOS (OOC SOS) = 23 (UNK)
VS RPI
(1-25) = 0-7
(1-50) = 2-8
(1-100) = 6-8

Teams NCSU needs to win to help NCAA Resume (CBS RPI):
Miami (51)
Texas (52)
St. Bonaventure (96)
Princeton (97)
Maryland (103)

______________

ACC Tournament Seeding Analysis:
UVA, NCSU, Miami, Clemson (8-7)

Remaining Games:
Boston College at Miami
Clemson at FSU
Virginia at Maryland
NCSU at VT

3 Way Tie Scenarios (head to head records):
(4) NCSU (2-1)
(5) Clemson (1-1)
(6) Miami (1-2)

OR
(4) Virginia (2-0)
(5) NCSU (2-1)
(6) Miami (0-3)

OR
Clemson (2-1)
Virginia (2-1)
(6) NCSU (0-2)

4 Way Tie:
(4) Virginia (3-1)
(5) Clemson (2-2)
(6) NCSU (2-2)
(7) Miami (1-3)

As you can see in these 4 scenarios, to get the 4 seed, Virginia MUST lose and Miami MUST win. Since NCSU needs Maryland & Miami to win to help in NCAAT resume those are easy games to watch and know who to pull for. Even if we all hate Maryland we can suck it up for 1 game.

So, Pull for State, Pull for Maryland, Pull for Miami, and Pull for FSU. (Refer to BackingThePack to see who to pull against on a national level.)

The worst thing to happen is to finish 4th and have to play the winner of Clemson/GT. Does nothing for State’s RPI or resume. I would think State would have to make it to the finals to make the NCAAT. Though I could be completely wrong but this is what happens when you live life on the bubble.

“Between the blues it comes down to pulling against the most obnoxious fans for me. The UNC fans I have lived with all my life. At least they pull for their team in all sports and have ties to their U or they have been fans since they were kids.”

Pack85EE, It is not that way where I live. You can find a very, very few tarhole fans that even know that they have an ongoing football scandal in chapel he!!. I mentioned the scandal to a couple during the NCAA investigation and they accused me of fabricating the whole thing. They said if the tarholes are doing anything illegal it is because everyone else is doing it too. I blew up at them when they said that State was ” probably doing worse things” and the NCAA would be calling.

D@mn a bunch of tarhole fans! They are the most obnoxious people in the world. I will never pull for that lying, cheating, homosexual school against anyone!! Efffffff them all and their walmart t-shirts and hats.

    Go Pack!

I offer my apologies for the tirade but GO ABC!

The Pack, Duke, FSU and Maryland need to win this weekend.

I don’t think we are in the discussion if we lose in the semis, unless we beat UVA in the quarters (quality win) and really give a blue a dogfight. The lack of quality wins is what hurts us. We’ve lost to every good team we’ve played. That smells like NIT to me.

But I am heartened to see our RPI up to 59. Better than I expected.

I am NOT heartened that we are so deep into bubble talk when we still have a coinflip game on Sunday night. I have a bad feeling about that one.

  5. BJD95 03/02/2012 at 11:01 PM #

And yay, Wolfpack women! Better late than never, eh?

  6. MP 03/03/2012 at 6:45 AM #

Yes, Sunday is job #1. And it ain’t gonna be easy.

Win at VPI and on ACCT Friday that makes us 10-7 (I’m not going to count ACCT Thursday even if we play that day). I think Coach Gott was being fair when he said we needed 11 wins, and he meant regular season only. If we can’t even get there including the ACCT then we really don’t have a case. Getting to the NCAAT without at least a win on ACCT Saturday would be a complete gift – Attributable to NCAAT expansion.

BJD – I did a quick break down of the Real-Time RPI and posted it on the SFN Forums, but here’s the meat and potatoes of it all when it comes to our post-season chances:
The 59 teams in front of us are from 19 conferences. This means that if by some miracle no “new” team (a team not in those 59 spots) emerges, you can go farther down the RPI…and right now, my non-coffee math says that this means of your 68 tournament teams, 56 would be from the top 68.
    * What does this all mean? We’re not in as bad shape as some might think. As of right now, strictly from an RPI standpoint (which is our worst indicator) we stand at 60 with a tournament taking potentially the top 56 at large spots.

  8. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 10:33 AM #

I think the worst indicator is Top 50 record. We really need Texas and Miami to have good conference tourney runs. But Texas especially looks like dogshit every time I see them.

I think we’ve in good hands with both the men and women’s programs for the moment. Both coaches just need some troops – the men have them coming, and I think I’ve heard the women have some talent coming too.
What we hoped for (men) this year was to make the NCAAT – here we are in March and we’re still talking about it. We’ll all be very disappointed if we don’t make it, but think about how far we’ve come since this time last year.

  10. WolftownVA81 03/03/2012 at 1:48 PM #

Even if we make the NCAA, we’ll be such a low seed that we’ll draw a tough apponent with a likely outcome of losing in game one. Not being negative but just wanted to set up a hypothetical:
    1. Better to go to the NCAAT and get bounced in game 1 or
    2. Go to the NIT and get multiple game experience?

Perhaps for where this team stands, number 2 is not such a bad option.
Regardless, this team has come a long way and has had a pretty successful season based on where they were last year. Here’s hoping for a strong finish. Go Pack.

  11. Rochester 03/03/2012 at 2:01 PM #

Wolftown, would you rather score once with a hot chick or five times with a fat, ugly one?

    NCAAT > NIT every time.

  12. BJD95 03/03/2012 at 2:48 PM #

The NCAAT is always better. But based on our stage of development, the NIT is a very worthy consolation prize this year. Either tourney would be good for us.

My “eye test” is that we are an NIT team. Completely a fair assessment of our abilities and performance, IMHO.

This season should hopefully quell any talk of further expanding the field. Definitely no good teams staying home this year.
