NC STATE BASKETBALL

Caulton Tudor (N&O)
Wood’s back and so is the Pack

The prevailing theory among N.C. State basketball fans for the past several games was that Scott Wood had to resurface at some point.

Those fans were right.

After missing 31 of his last 38 field-goal attempts, the normally accurate junior forward finally was back on target Wednesday night in the RBC Center against Miami.

Although it still may be too late for the Wolfpack to land an NCAA Tournament bid, Wood’s 15 points on five 3-pointers helped key a 77-73 win over Miami – a game that N.C. State absolutely had to take.

N.C. State women rally to beat Florida State, 74-71 at ACC tournament

The N.C. State women’s basketball team had Florida State right where it wanted.

The No. 9 Wolfpack, rallying in the second half and drawing the game close late, thrive in tight games, especially in the ACC tournament.

The Pack pulled out another one in the first round, claiming a 74-71 victory over the Seminoles at Greensboro Coliseum. The Pack moves into the quarterfinals against top-seeded Duke on Friday afternoon.

Thursday’s victory looked familar as the Pack played gritty defense late and made critical shots to get the win.

My analysis of NCSU heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

CBS Sports (thru 2/29)
NCSU 19-11 (8-7)
RPI = 59
SOS (OOC SOS) = 25 (25)
VS RPI
(1-25) = 0-6
(1-50) = 0-8
(1-100) = 6-8

Stat Sheet (thru 3/1)
NCSU 19-11 (8-7)
RPI = 59
SOS (OOC SOS) = 23 (UNK)
VS RPI
(1-25) = 0-7
(1-50) = 2-8
(1-100) = 6-8

Teams NCSU needs to win to help NCAA Resume (CBS RPI):
Miami (51)
Texas (52)
St. Bonaventure (96)
Princeton (97)
Maryland (103)

______________

ACC Tournament Seeding Analysis:
UVA, NCSU, Miami, Clemson (8-7)

Remaining Games:
Boston College at Miami
Clemson at FSU
Virginia at Maryland
NCSU at VT

3 Way Tie Scenarios (head to head records):
(4) NCSU (2-1)
(5) Clemson (1-1)
(6) Miami (1-2)

OR
(4) Virginia (2-0)
(5) NCSU (2-1)
(6) Miami (0-3)

OR
Clemson (2-1)
Virginia (2-1)
(6) NCSU (0-2)

4 Way Tie:
(4) Virginia (3-1)
(5) Clemson (2-2)
(6) NCSU (2-2)
(7) Miami (1-3)

As you can see in these 4 scenarios, to get the 4 seed, Virginia MUST lose and Miami MUST win. Since NCSU needs Maryland & Miami to win to help in NCAAT resume those are easy games to watch and know who to pull for. Even if we all hate Maryland we can suck it up for 1 game.

So, Pull for State, Pull for Maryland, Pull for Miami, and Pull for FSU. (Refer to BackingThePack to see who to pull against on a national level.)

The worst thing to happen is to finish 4th and have to play the winner of Clemson/GT. Does nothing for State’s RPI or resume. I would think State would have to make it to the finals to make the NCAAT. Though I could be completely wrong but this is what happens when you live life on the bubble.

Please Pack find a way to beat VATech and hope we get lots of help from others to wrap up 4th seed. Just the fact that Greenberg is such a HWSNBN sympathizer should be enough. Go Pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would add Dook to the list of teams that we want to win too

  3. my_adidas 03/02/2012 at 8:48 AM #

Maybe its the faint memories of V, or the terminal underdog syndrome (state fan, and cubs fan) but something inside me wants another shot at the holes and Satan (K). They both know this isn’t Sydney’s team anymore and would probably prefer not to see Calvin and Lorenzo anymore.

  4. Sweet jumper 03/02/2012 at 9:25 AM #

I always root for Dook when they are not playing State or Davidson. I never root for UNX. I have tried but I just can’t do it. Total ABC for me!!

  5. tuckerdorm1983 03/02/2012 at 9:26 AM #

we will know going into our game sunday night what we are playing for. Most likely it will if we win we are 5th and lose we are 6th. So be it. I don’t see MD beating UVA and I don’t see Clemson beating FSU. Miami will beat BC meaning it falls this way

I like the 4 way tie for fourth. (all four teams lose or all four teams win)
UVA, NCST, MIAMI and CLEMSON are all 9-7 or 8-8

NCST against the other three 2-2
UVA against the other three 3-1
MIAMI against the other three 1-3
CLEM against the other three 2-2

it could come down to a coin toss. That would be a hoot

    see the rules

Great post thanks for putting this together for everyone. We certianly need to win and get a 4 or 5 seed. I am an ABCer for sure, root for Duke some when they play. Was born in Va. so second favorite ACC team for me is Virginia. Grew up rooting for Pack and Wahoos. A great ACC player you never hear about is Jeff Lamp. I remember him being part of a cover story in Sports Illustrated with some other college players, maybe labled as super sophs or something like that.

@ Adidas- I like the “satan” match up soooo much better than the other.
    GO PACK!!

SweetJumper…I must say I’m ABBB (Anybody but both blues). I hate them both with major disdain. I wish they could both loose this weekend. Go Pack!

  9. Lunatic Fringe 03/02/2012 at 11:14 AM #

Definately add Duke to the list. I still believe we need a win v UVA in second round and win v Duke in third round with a win v VT ( and BC if we play on Thursday). UNC is a bad match up for us so win vs them in third round would be harder.

  10. eas 03/02/2012 at 11:24 AM #

I hope we play anyone but The Tarholes in the tourney. They pretty much offer the worst match up scenario we could ever ask for.

  11. Texpack 03/02/2012 at 11:43 AM #

We can also finish 4th with a win a UVa loss and a Clemson loss. If the games go according to form (UVa, State, & Miami winning with Clemson losing) we will finish fifth. I really think we are the fifth best team in the league this year. UVa is only slightly better than we are.

No matter what happens this weekend, we would be best served playing Virginia in the quarterfinals and Duke in the semifinals.

It’s a new day for State basketball and we need to go into Cassell Coliseum and beat the living shit out of the Hokies.

The turkeys have lost the last four out of five games and only beat Boston College 66-65 and Georgia Tech 74-73…both at home.

    GO PACK!

Between the blues it comes down to pulling against the most obnoxious fans for me. The UNC fans I have lived with all my life. At least they pull for their team in all sports and have ties to their U or they have been fans since they were kids. But I hate the Duke fans (more). I can’t even harass them about football because they claim some other univerity like ECU or App, maybe their Alma Mater. How rarely do you meet a Duke Grad? Don’t they just go back up to yankee land where they came from? So the fans around here are just bandwagon fans riding duke’s long slime trail. At least that’s how it is where I work. Best case as always is the roof falls in.

  14. Pack85EE 03/02/2012 at 12:53 PM #

So, it looks like the only way we get that rematch with VA is if they win and we win and clemson looses. Miami does not matter but we need their win for RPI. I guess best case is a tie w Miami and we get forth seed and play them a 3rd time. I stated a couple of days ago, 5th would not be that bad. I was thinking then of playing VA and getting the good RPI win. Clemson would not be a great RPI win but it would be pay back to beat them.

  15. Thinkpack17 03/02/2012 at 1:04 PM #

It’s really nice to hear Scott take responsibility for not getting open. I don’t know if the coaching staff put that in his mind or if he came to that conclusion on his own, either way it’s a good sign.

Just cut hard, he does get held a lot. But it’s a lot easier for a ref to see a grab when you are going all out focused on your movement rather than slowing down to hand fight with your guy on the baseline.

Who we play on Friday in the ACCT is completely irrelevant. Beating a good(“ish”) UVA team on Friday has as much worth as beating Clemson or anyone else. The only way we’re going to the NCAAT is (1) Beat VPI this weekend, (2) Beat ANYONE on ACCT Friday, and beat any of the Top 3 on ACCT Saturday and/or Sunday.

A win over UVA with their relatively good RPI followed by a loss on Saturday means squat.

Everyone on here’s saying to pull for duke over Carolina and I would have agreed every other game in my life, but let’s not forget amile Jefferson is going to be at that game. I’m kind of hoping duke gets blown out and the fans boo and coach k loses his cool at his players and shows his ass. Showing amile who’s the best coach to come play for

  18. JasonP 03/02/2012 at 3:04 PM #

“I’m kind of hoping duke gets blown out and the fans boo and coach k loses his cool at his players and shows his ass.”

I’m picturing this in my mind and it is hilarious.

    * Still laughing.

  19. Prowling Woofie 03/02/2012 at 4:09 PM #

All K needs to lose his cool and show his ass is for one call to go UNC’s way…

  20. Pack85EE 03/02/2012 at 4:48 PM #

MP you are probably right although some of the bubble stuff makes it look like we are close if things go are way. Still, the only sure thing is a victory on Sunday. Aside from that happening I’m pulling for all the things that improve our RPI. A Miami victory tomorrow and a good win or two in the tournament.

  21. Pack85EE 03/02/2012 at 5:21 PM #

Wolfpacker has an interesting interview with Gottfried. I like hearing him talk Basketball. He says he does not give much creadence to prognasticators saying you need to win one or win two in a conf. tourny. Judging by what he said, it made me think that the tourny will be all about what it does for our final RPI. Besides winning it of course. He also talked about the strength of non conference schedule of NCSU compared w Clemson, Miami, and UVA. Ours was much tougher and he said that makes a difference.

  22. RabidWolf 03/02/2012 at 5:42 PM #

Don’t know if anybody is following (or gives a tinker’s damn about) the women’s tournament, but…..the Wolfpack girls just became the first ever 9 seed to knock off a 1, beating Duke 75-73.

    Way to go girls!

  23. state73 03/02/2012 at 5:45 PM #

Way to go WOLFPACK WOMEN! What a win over Duke. Good luck tomorrow.

  24. xphoenix87 03/02/2012 at 6:29 PM #

First time a 9 seed has ever beaten a 1 seed, but also the first time since 1991 that neither Duke nor UNC has been in the semifinals.

This team has plenty of talent, but they just haven’t been able to put things together this year. When Holston and Kastanek are both playing well, they can play with anyone.

  25. choppack1 03/02/2012 at 7:11 PM #

What will be interesting is if we win tomorrow and make it to Saturday. In that case we could have a nice rpi. Our sos is solid.
