First Four Open Thread

Isn’t it wonderful that the tournament is starting? Even more wonderful that the Pack is invited? Even more wonderful still that we get three days of appetizers before State and SDSU tip off?

Tonight, we can cheer on Iona College, for giving us V (and the “Jim Valvano, I-own-a college” joke he loved to tell). March is really here, and how sweet it is.

Hell, WKU’s whole season is an epic comeback. Their coach was fired like 7 ganes into an awful season. Losing record overall, etc. I do like the First Four concept. But no more, dammit.

Entertaining, yes. But Big Blue isn’t exactly quaking in their boots.

“Hilltoppers keep Hilltoppin'”. That’s why they pay Kellogg the big bucks.

And of course, he laughs at his own terrible joke. Like always. Seriously, how does he have a job??

    PM Cameron looks about 14.

Great start to the tourney for Kellogg…..way to pick ’em. Also, horrible wide open air ball 3 by the Delta Devils that would have tied it. Congrats Hilltoppers.

Woohoo, time for the ghost of V to enter the building. Still plenty of time to spirit to Columbus for part two…

One of the best comebacks I have ever seen.

  8. JEOH2 03/13/2012 at 8:49 PM #

    27 turnovers…only 19 shots made…and a team won…

DONT expand the tourny ever…or get rid of automatic bids…

Wow, I hate that I couldn’t take any more and turned the game off.

Update on the two horrid teams Lunardi kept putting in his bracket – Mississippi State loses at home to UMass, Seton Hall wins by 2 at home…against Stony Brook.

Can someone explain to me why in the hell Kenny Smith has a job in front of a TV camera?

Expansion of the NCAAT (within reason) wouldn’t necessarily make for more games like this. The added teams it would allow in wouldn’t necessarily be this bad, and if they expanded and did away with auto qualifiers, I dare say it would possibly improve the watchability of some of these games…or at least give us better alternatives to the ones that turn out this way.

They could expand by 16 (well, 12 I guess) to get to 80. Top 16 seeds get first weekend (2 rounds) byes. Rest are seeded and play two rounds to get down to 16, then face the top 16. Break that in half twice and you’re down to eight after the second weekend.

Then, rather than the final four weekend (saturday, monday), the teams are re-seeded and play single elimination for three days, Friday thru Sunday, like the ACC tourney used to be.

Fans would love it. NCAA and CBS would love the $$$$

Flipping channels and unfortunately stumbled across the Oregon-LSU NIT game. Oregon has the ugliest, most distracting court surface imaginable…just bad.

BTW, that reminds me….who is the ONE SINGLE PERSON in the new poll who had the gall to pick us up to the national championship game, and then lose it? I mean come on dude!!!!!(or dudette)

Fess up….which one of you was it?

I know this is completely off topic and perhaps someone would like to move this somewhere else, but did anyone realize that the baseball team is ranked 25th in the latest ESPN poll…and we won again (big) tonight.

At the moment, it would be I own a Cougar.

Every deserving team already makes it, IMHO. No more expansion.

But wow, does Iona ever look like they belong. Now I’m extremely glad we didn’t get stuck playing them in the prelims! Running circles around the Stormin’ Mormons.

Momo Jones is every bit as good when AZ shellacked Duke last year.

  19. Wufpacker 03/13/2012 at 9:44 PM #

Dang. Tracy Wolfson needs to fire her makeup person.

And I agree that every deserving team makes it as it is, and I’m generally not in favor of expansion. To be honest, I’d prefer they cut it back to 64 and do away with auto qualifiers. But what I was proposing was a way to cut out auto qualifiers (thus getting rid of the really bad teams), while making sure that a decent number of deserving mid-majors would be included (deserving always being a relative term, of course).

Looks like there’s still some fight in the Big Love yet. 7-0 run BYU.

Machado with 7 assists already…good lord.

  21. BJD95 03/13/2012 at 9:49 PM #

The ghost of Bill Henrickson has arrove to battle Spiritus Valvanos.

Iona is on pace for 120+

  22. BJD95 03/13/2012 at 9:53 PM #

I don’t mind #1 and #2 seeds getting the reward of playing a lousy team in the first round. But yeah, it would be nice to see more deserving mid-majors instead of awful low-majors.

  23. Lunatic Fringe 03/13/2012 at 9:56 PM #

I actually think that Iona lapping BYU says more about why BYU should not be in tournament than why Iona should be in it.

  24. Wufpacker 03/13/2012 at 9:59 PM #

I too am glad we are not facing the Gaels tonight. They appear to be the ones on a mission. (get it?)

Northwestern’s court is trying to out ugly Oregon’s.
