Pack/Eagles Game Thread

Sorry to take the focus away from the breathtaking excitement of high schoolers filling out paperwork, but there is actual sports in a few minutes. It’s BC, a team we killed once and should kill again tonight. See ya in the comments.

Like picking up an ugly chick.

  2. Rick 02/01/2012 at 10:29 PM #

I think we would have lost tonight to anyone except BC or Wake

Well, it was an ugly win. But it’s an ugly win on the road–and what would have been an ugly loss for last year’s team. I’ll take that as a sign of progress, however slim.

Well, its a win which I’ll take but that was painful to watch.

“We need a game like this grind it out…”

That’s called lipstick on a pig.

Well BJ you called it. We sure killed ’em.

Much more disappointed by this than by the last 2 losses. BC is terrible, you have to blow them out.

Well, we matched the win total of last years team in acc victories.

It was a win, but certainly not very impressive. Brown, Wood, Leslie, where were you. This shouldn’t have even been close. But again, at least we won playing like crap.

An ugly win but a win.

“I just looked. AJ is averaging 20 minutes a game. It is mind blowing that he is playing that many minutes for an ACC team.”

AJ was signed because we have no one else, who can play PG, unless you think you can convert Raymond or Harris into a point guard on the fly in the middle of a season?

AJ’s not shooting well right now, but he can at least do an decent job of setting up the offense, so Brown can get a breather.

We knew the deal with AJ is that he was going to play for one year as a back up, because we desperately needed the depth.

Win is a win, all I’m going to say. But I get a feeling we’ve peaked. Oh boy.

crapolo, CJW and Wood should be the only ones allowed to take 3s. Brown and Johnson can’t hit the side of a barn. As bad as wood played he bailed us out at the end with a three and then nailed the ft

    WOW.

  15. tuckerdorm1983 02/01/2012 at 10:43 PM #

wow and a half, gutted it out. Should have never been close. I see the NIT in our future if we play like we did tonight. About as sharp as a dull butter knife.

I’m telling myself that this one falls into the “learning to win” category. I’ll just take it as a sign of forward progress that we played so poorly but still managed to make winning plays at the end.

  17. 61Packer 02/01/2012 at 10:52 PM #

Glad we won, but we’ve simply GOTT to have a decent point guard next season.

This could easily have been a bad loss. BC isn’t very good but their coach’s strategy to milk the clock was shrewd and nearly worked. That and we played poorly. But we did win and so there’s still a glimmer of hope.

There’s an old saying about there being no pictures in the standings, and in the case of this game, it’s a good thing.

Still, don’t look past it: a road win in the ACC by a team that’s got no memory of consistently winning to fall back on is a good thing. Fugly? Yeah. But it’s another tick on the right side of the ledger.

Now it’s time to beat Wake at home and go back on the road to see if we can even the score with Georgia Tech. Both games are important and winnable. We’ll need those wins considering Duke, UNC and FSU are after that.

    Survive and advance.

Maryland just lost in 2OT at Miami, 90-86. Stoglin got 33 and Turgeon got 2Ts w/7 min to go in 2nd half.

Grinding out an ugly win on the road, when we’re not playing particularly well (and can’t shoot even mediocre) and against a league opponent, is never anything to be taken for granted. It’s one we had to have and we got it. To me, it’s the sign of a team that is improving as far as mental toughness.

Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

I think State is 6-35 from 3 point range the past two games. Still, a road win in the ACC.

After as many ugly losses as we have suffered over the last few years I am going to be happy with an ugly win. : )

  24. bleedingred08 02/02/2012 at 12:18 AM #

I agree with Wufpacker, we got an ugly win. We made some key shots and free throws at the end after some bad plays in the second half. Lets look for improvement in the next contest.

I didn’t get to see too much, but very happy we got the win.

The parts I did get to see – all I could think about was Sidney with whoever that was doing the constant whistling.

I didn’t get the sense / feeling that we were mailing it in – I thought the defensive effort was fairly decent from what I saw … But they severely outplayed us for most of the second half (gave up far too many offensive rebounds and just sloppy turnovers).

My sense is that the team might be a little fatigued, particularly on the mental side of the equation. Really disheartening loss over the weekend – plus this team has never really won. Learning to win is hard – but we have 3 conference road victories now. Maybe not over the best competition, but that’s still very impressive for this team.

We played pretty poorly, but I also thought you have to give BC some credit. Their game plan was solid and they were effective for the most part in getting the game to go their way.

We did just enough to win though, and that’s great. Ugly game – one that we probably lose 8 out of 10 times over the past 20 years or so – but we found a way to win. So take encouragement from that.

Definitely have to get the guys’ confidence up again … seems to have waned a bit. Go Pack.
