Pack/Eagles Game Thread

Sorry to take the focus away from the breathtaking excitement of high schoolers filling out paperwork, but there is actual sports in a few minutes. It’s BC, a team we killed once and should kill again tonight. See ya in the comments.

Don’t care who it’s against or how, an ACC road win is an ACC road win. When was the last time we were 3-1 on the road? Way to go Pack!

A few thoughts on the game and the current state of the team…

    1) A road ACC win is always a good thing. Doesnt matter who its against.

    2) We are playing like a tired team that has hit a wall…Not surprising with the short bench. I believe this is temporary and we will fight through it to finish relatively strong.

    3) Most of our players (especially on the perimeter) have reverted to very poor defensive posture lately. Of course, we saw this under the previous coach as just the regular defense. I notice our defenders playing way too upright on the perimeter, not giving proper spacing and relative body positioning to the offensive player, and reaching in/playing d with hands rather than moving feet. With this group, I think it goes back to being tired. Its very difficult to maintain proper defensive posture (and intensity) when fatigued.

    4) Scott Wood is an awful defensive player. I love the guy for the 3s and the FTs, but man is he bad at defense. He gambles like a player who is good enough to get away with being out of position if the gamble doesnt work. He’s not good enough. Its like he knows how poorly he plays defense, so he then tries to make it all up by trying to do more than he is capable of. He is guilty of every defensive shortcoming listed above in #3…except he has always played this way, not just when tired. Hey Scott, here’s the answer: Just work on being solid, not spectacular…and improve footwork. Oh, and stop whining to the refs after every time you reach in and get caught. Even if you didnt touch the guy, you look guilty because of the lazy footwork/positioning. In other words, work harder! (on both ends of the court for that matter)

    5) Obviously, our shooting % is taking a nose dive. Again, fatigue. No legs. This is even more reason to stop shooting a gazillion 3s, and pound the ball inside. I understand we are missing in the low post and layups too. But I still like our chances better if we are getting to the line. You dont do that shooting 17-22 ft jumpers. We won tonite at the FT line. Credit to Coach Gottfried.

    6) The best news is that I am positive that none of this is lost on the coaching staff. I really have confidence that they will push these guys through the rough stretch, and we will peak in late Feb/March. Does that mean we dance? I think we find a way to just get in…but that really hinges on A) Lo Brown running the show like he did earlier, B) Rich and Calvin being effective w/o fouling, C)Overcoming the team fatigue factor, D) Scott Wood playing better defense, E) Painter making a more consistant contribution every game.

I was thinking of getting the NC STATE Basketball team to come over to my house and help me put a new patio in my back yard. Reason being is they are so good at laying bricks. As Dicky V says “Brick city baby!!!”

I think you are seeing a fatigued team. The biggest complaint I have is that we don’t use more of the bench. I think De Theay, Harris, and Raymond should be capable of giving a few minutes each half without hurting the team. The only thing I can say about last night is a win is a win.

They are not capable. Give them a few minutes last night and we lose. Please give it a rest man. They are not good enough right now to have any minutes unless we have the game in full control. It’s a dumb idea otherwise, unless you are not playing to win the game. Again, PLEASE give it rest.

One very good postive. We got some rock solid experience playing a slow half court game. We were much better with our movement in the half court the second half. We shot 55% in the second half.

We played a slow, half court game and still won. It’s possible we may try a half court game plan against UNC next time, so good experience.

Another very solid game for CJ Williams. He is becoming Mr. Dependable. He’s playing very smart this year. Great shot selection, good defense, low turnover. Just having a solid year.

Primacyone, I respectfully disagree with your opinion. But everyone has one, right? I’m not suggesting you make wholesale changes in the rotation, but just to use some of these kids to give the starters more of a blow when they need one.

^If it was a great idea, I have a great deal of confidence that Gott, Lutz, and Early would be implementing that option. Don’t you?

If it presents a greater risk of 6-10 points going the other way due to turnovers, lack of defense, and offensive nonprodcutivity, I have a great deal of confidnce that Gott, Lutz, and Early would be leaving those kids on the bench. Don’t you?

Primacyone, love the coaching staff and the direction of the team. I have no doubt that we would have lost that game last year. Just concerned about fatigue becoming an issue.

As a fan I have no insight into the day to day stuff or the whys of the decisions the coaching staff makes. What I saw last night was a very smart game by BC – the strategy was excellent. They took away things the Pack has done to their benefit all year. I also saw some fatigue by the Pack – maybe that is mental as well as physical (this group of players have never been relevant to the question in their college careers and this is “new ground”).

I thought in general the Pack played with fire on defense – and with the BC tactics that required long stretches of intense defense. I saw few wide open 3’s by BC, lots of scrambling defense by the Pack and I did not feel there was a lack of effort. All that effort on defense apparently affected the offense.

In the end a road win however fugly. This part of the season is “just win, baby” time.

To pack44fan, I am on board with you, these guys need to get some playing time, but not together, mix them in with the starters. If they start screwing up, then the coaches know how to sit them. At present if were to lose any of our starters for any reason, we don’t really have any experienced replacements to feel comfortable with, except for maybe AJ, who sometimes looks rather inexperienced with his shot selections, as in the BC game. Not that every State fans cares, but the women’s team has started playing a large number of bench players, and it is working for them. even played 11 players in the FSU game, and not in the end, but during the entire game. It has paid off, as in the VT, game they won by 12 points, and State’s leading scorer only scored 2 points off free throws.
