Pack/Devils Game Thread

Or if you prefer, the game against a Blue that we can win. And I stand pat in asserting that the Pack WILL win. One factor that I forgot to mention in my initial upset predicting post – Thursdays are good luck. Tonight, it’s all coming up Milhouse.

In the meantime, we can discuss topics such as the televised root canal that is VPI at FSU. Yeesh.

I blame it on the black jerseys. Hopefully, they will not be seen ever again. As long as we win the last one of this “brutal” stretch, I’m fine with the Pack.

    ACC officials…more of the same.

We built a lead playing solid defense, rebounding, and getting out on the break. Aside from the cheap fouls on CJW, there were plenty of ticky tack stuff called on both sides tonight. Howell continues to pick up 2-3 fouls a game 20-30 ft from the basket…and that’s the zebras fault?..lmao This team still has too much Lowe in it.

We lost the game b/c we left Curry, Dawkins, and Rivers with wide open looks late in the game. WE didn’t defend worth shit. And we didn’t score worth shit. Nobody complained about how terrible the refs were in the first half when Alex Johnson was making everything.

You can’t win games against good teams when most of your starting line-up is rendered ineffective by half time by biased officiating. The momentum changer and the difference makers were again the boys wearing black and white.

  5. GApack04 02/17/2012 at 12:19 AM #

The first 5 minutes in the 2nd half was just terrible officiating on both sides. All those fouls didn’t squander the lead but it planted the seeds for a Dook comeback. This team cannot win with 3 out of 5 starters sitting major minutes. MG and the team looked flabbergasted at the end and both made mistakes. MG refusing to use his time outs to suppress the run and the players settling for jumpers and stepping out of bounds. Beating Dook unfortunately is not about just beating a BBall team it is beating the refs, the ACC, one of the best coaches in history, and literally decades of NC State suck. Hopefully this is a building block going forward.

“WE SCORED 27 POINTS IN THE SECOND HALF. 27. Herbesque. It just don’t win games. Pressure ate the boys up. Alligator arms. Tentative. That’s why you had to play the big boys when there’s momentum. Absolutely gave this game away. Epoch choke job.”

Wow. Couldn’t disagree more. There was a very clear reason – to anyone paying attention – that we had to play p*ssy ball in the 2nd half. It had very little to do with choking and a lot to do with refs and no bench.

Our team was WAY better than their team tonight all things being equal. But things were not equal in any way, shape, or form.

“I blame Gottfriend for this one”
    Idiot.

I would request that everyone ignore this obvious troll.

  8. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 12:22 AM #

Namecalling? Really? Idiot? WTF? You guys are deuches. Refs didn’t lose it. CJW had a rough night with some cheap ones. But Howell, 20-30 ft from the basket reaching?

  9. redcanine 02/17/2012 at 12:23 AM #

The sh!t they called on CJW (and Calvin) was downright cruel. F these refs!

It’s time to explore other (league) options.

  11. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 12:25 AM #

First 5 minutes, we got roughed up with some cheap ones, but that isn’t what lost it. And I guarantee you the coaching staff isn’t whining about the zebras.

  12. eas 02/17/2012 at 12:26 AM #

We went from running the ball to running out the clock. No second or third passes just one bad shot each time down the court. The last 11 minutes was the same as a prevent defense in football and it just doesn’t work for a running team.
Play the scrubs and keep the tempo up.

    Just awful refs….awful.

  13. swamppack 02/17/2012 at 12:28 AM #

Whiteshoes, to be sure your just playing the role of the antagonist for your own entertainment. To be sure.

  14. SaccoV 02/17/2012 at 12:33 AM #

The 4th foul on Calvin Leslie was a two-handed blocked shot on either Austin or Rivers. The refs DIRECTLY affected the outcome of this game. Missed free throws didn’t help, but when you have three of your starters with 3 fouls or more within one minute of the second half, we didn’t have a prayer of winning this game. For our part, Lorenzo Brown needs to stop thinking that he’s going to make a step-back three at the end of the game. This is the second time for such a calamity.

  15. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 12:36 AM #

swamppack, i wish that was true. I’ve just been around long enough, played in and coached in enough competitive contests, to know that the zebras and the umpires rarely decide the outcome. Basketball officiating is definitely frustrating b/c it seems the least consistent. But you’ll never hear me admit it decides outcomes. Never. Ever. How many minutes did CJW play tonight? And Rick says, you have to sit him. For what? It’s lagging a birdie put that you have to make to win a PGA event. Maybe he fouls out earlier, maybe he doesn’t, but if you don’t play them, you sure as hell don’t know. We needed more firepower in there in the second half.

I hope they can find Scott Wood before the game this weekend…kid disappears in big games.

Whiteshoes – I agree with some of your points, but you can’t place blame on one thing. Dook was terrible most of the game and State was on fire in the first half. Not even the biggest State homer in the world could possibly think that would continue. I mean Alex was on fire early and the dude has been bad all yr from 3. The fouls early in the 2nd hurt both teams at that moment in time – prevented Dook from mounting a comeback, but also crippled State bc they lost 3 out of 5 starters. Couple that with Wood being a non-factor, Brown was trying to carry the load for the whole team. Eventually State stopped scoring and Dook started hitting shots. IMO – Seth Curry deserves most of the credit for this win he kept them in it before Rivers finally showed up.

The team that played better for most of the game lost, but the team with the most talent won. Hopefully when we have more talent and more depth MG and company can overcome all the normal Blue Factors.

We were up 61-41 at the 11:33 mark. And that’s long after we had a few guys in foul trouble. We scored 12 points in 11:33. 12 points. That’s Herbesque. And that wasn’t the zebras.

  18. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 12:47 AM #

This one just hurts so bad b/c it had major NCAA tourney implications. I liked this chance much better than the FSU or UNC games. We play better in transition, Duke likes to push, and shoot the 3. FSU will bog us down in the halfcourt where we’re not so great, and they’ll bother us with their size and length. Very dissappointing loss.

  19. swamppack 02/17/2012 at 12:50 AM #

Whiteshoes, I agree with one thing you said, Gott should have allowed his starters to play with fouls. Once he finally put them back in the game they were “cold” so to speak. I kept begging in my mind for him to quit waiting. When it got to the 6:00 mark it was just too late.

I still think you are going too light on the effect our hands unjustly being tied by the refs had on the game.

  20. swamppack 02/17/2012 at 12:55 AM #

By the way, does State have the worst combined record against Duke and Xarolina over the past 15 yrs. of ANY ACC team?

  21. GApack04 02/17/2012 at 12:56 AM #

I think the 20 pt lead made him push the envelope a little too far. This being his first time in Durham maybe he didn’t realize how quickly it goes downhill there.

I’m with you swamp I think whiteshoes is discounting the fouls a little bit too much. It didn’t win the game for Dook but it sure as hell made it more difficult for State to win.

  22. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 1:00 AM #

Hey, I’m throwing shit the whole first five minutes of the first half when CJW gets hosed with the fourth foul and the other guys pick up cheap thirds. But HOwell picked up 2 tonight that were just bonehead fouls, which is typical. I thought they credited CJL with one that should’ve gone to Johnson. Otherwise, i can’t complain. But having CJW on the pine for nearly 30-35 minutes, man, you just can’t replace that guy. That’s where the zebras came into play tonight. Dawkins and Curry and Rivers ate us up in the second half.

  23. Whiteshoes67 02/17/2012 at 1:10 AM #

I’m not discounting the foul situation or zebra impact. I saw plenty of ticky tack stuff called tonight on Blue. They just didn’t pile up because K played 10, we played 8. I think the foul situation was 24 (Red) to 21 (blue). The zebra impact was felt more with CJW on the pine than anything. We missed his perimeter defense and scoring in the second half. AJ didn’t give us much after the first 20. But props to him for stroking it in the first half. I just would have preferred if GOtt had gone out with guns blazing. The way i see it, he lagged a few too many birdie and eagle putts. The stakes were too high to hold out key players.

Did you see the look on Howell’s face after he “fouled out”? He knew he was screwed, even if the 5th foul was a legit call. And same with calvin.

But, it doesn’t seem like a good idea for those two guys to sit and mope. Their team still needs them to keep their heads in the game.

Maybe this game was just too much, and they can’t be blamed for checking out of the game after they fouled out. It was Howell’s last trip to Cameron, and perhaps Calvin’s, too.

When the TV commentators have to comment on the bad calls, (nearly all at NCSU’s cost, like usual), then the zebra effect isn’t just imagined.

Thanks, Mrs. Howell and Williams for the great effort you made here in Raleigh for us. You couldn’t know that you were stepping into the Twilight Zone when you committed to NCSU – playing for a team that isn’t one of the pre-ordained blue “chosen ones”.

Have any old ACC players commented on the refereeing after leaving Raleigh?
