Pack Takes Best Shot, Holes Win By 12

Deliberate word choice – the Pack didn’t lose the game – UNC just won it. When an opponent takes your best shot, and beats you fair and square…you shake their hands and move on.

Lots of positives – the all-around game of Calvin Leslie, the tenacity of Lorenzo Brown, the hustle and determination of DeShawn Painter. Most importantly, no shell shocked, deer in headlights look (that had me worried about a 7-9 finish on Saturday). In Chapel Hill, the Holes were clowning around most of the second half. Tonight, they had to fight for 40 minutes and it very much seemed like they respected the game we played.

Two benchmarks to keep your eye on – first, the very realistic goal of finishing with a winning league record. This would suffice for at least one home NIT game, which would be a nice reward for a season of great progress. The second is a longshot, but by no means a pipe dream – a five game winning streak that would earn the Pack an NCAAT bid (or four if State is the 4 seed in the ACCT).

But please, God – if the Pack can’t win the ACCT, please let a non-blue knock us out. Preferably, Florida State. Amen.

For those of you with short memory, we would not even be discussing our chances at playing in the NCAA tourney if Wood wasn’t on this team, logging the minutes he is.

He’s in a slump, and he fell into one at a most inopportune time. But he’s the second leading scorer on the team. Also, players like him need to shoot their way out, not sit on the bench.

With CJW and AJ gone, are we supposed to start 2 or 3 freshman so Wood and his senior experience can come off the bench? Seems a wee bit knee-jerk reactionary for my taste.

Was at the game and extremely proud of the effort displayed.

Everything was left out there … so proud of that. Marshall beat us – I agreed with leaving him open – he just knocked them down. Dam*. Also think zone is a great way to go against the Holes, we just have a long way to go defensively and they knocked down shots.

If we shoot a little better and Marshall is “normal” shooting then who knows.

Holding out hope that we can make a run to close this out.

P.S. I hate Henson. Tis’ all.

FWIW – It was reported elsewhere that the NCAA chief ref was scheduled to attend this game (evaluating refs for the NCAAT) before Heir Hess decided to show his ass. Also that ACC refs are not ACC employees, but are contracted through another entity.

Been thinking along those same lines about Wood, nouveau wolf .

    Loved the team effort tonight!

  4. 8pack 02/22/2012 at 6:15 AM #

^Nouveau, Wood is certainly just in a shooting slump offensively right now…however, he is currently suffering through a three year defensive slump.
Like most players, he has certain limitations and weaknesses. What I was suggesting is more of a role player scenario (still 17-20 min or so), where he can stay fresher and we can play to his strengths.
And yes, at least one of the freshmen will get major minutes. Probably two of them, if not all three. To be clear, I like Scott Wood…I just believe on a stronger, deeper team, he comes off the bench so that we are more athletic and able to run and defend like Gottfried is building toward.

Not knocking Wood’s contribution earlier in the season, but the best players always show up for the big games. Scott Wood’s shooting game went the way of the buffalo when we got to the business end of the schedule. It’s hard not to call it coincidence after a hard loss to our biggest rival.

The effort was great from the guys last night, but we really needed a win to help save the rivalry. I think that’s why I’m so torn up over this one.

    Observations:
Share some of the same sentiments about Wood. I think when he is in, State is playing 4 on 5 – he just stands around on offense and is a defensive liability. I have always liked him, but I think he is the weak link right now.
CJ (Calvin) Leslie played his butt off. Double edged word as it makes him look better to NBA scouts. Man, can he jump. And he did a much better job of being quick with his decisions.
I want to see more drive and dish by Brown.

Not whining. Just an observation. And maybe it’s out of respect or lack of respect. But do we get every team’s best effort/game in the ACC? I mean, FSU beat this UNC team by 30+. I don’t think by any stretch FSU is better and certainly not THAT much better. But UNC had a “bad” game. UNC played us flawlessly, and we played well last night. I consider an over 70 point outting a good offensive effort. Our D was lasckluster but still. UNC played lights out against us…again. FSU had one of their best offensive performancves against us. GT came in and had their best game ever. Is anyone going to mail it in on us at least once other than WF? I mean, I thought we kinda mailed it in against FSU. So, everyone respects us and brings their A game, or disrespects us, and assumes a good effort can beat the ol wolfpack.

IMO Wood should be coming off the bench at this point. Every team we are facing now comes in with the gameplan of locking him down and they have been successful. He was ineffective vs UNC last night. We don’t have alot of options I know but AJ I think contributes more at this point.

Plus it might mess up opposing teams. You take out the opposing team’s target, might mess them up a bit from the get-go.

  9. Rick 02/22/2012 at 9:10 AM #

Woo is not hard to shut down. He does not work to get open.
This summer he should spend two hours every day watching tapes of how Reddick used to work to get open. That is what it takes.
He does not break hard off of picks and is not ready to shoot when he gets the ball.

  10. Rick 02/22/2012 at 9:13 AM #

    Leslie played great.
    The team never quit.
We made the run in the first half when AJ came in. He sparked us.
    The zone was awful.
I would give Marshall those shots all day long but, of course, against us he nailed them.

  11. PackerInRussia 02/22/2012 at 9:25 AM #

Agree 100% BJD. I thought the Pack had a good plan for down low on offense and defense. They found ways to score without going directly at their bigs; went under and around them. On D, they helped down low and put their fate in the hands of Marshall. I’d take those odds as well. It just turned out that Marshall played a great game. Not disappointed at all with the play; disappointed they lost of course, but it’s a much more satisfying, respectful disappointment than in the past. I suppose that’s progress.

  12. PackerInRussia 02/22/2012 at 9:26 AM #

packpowerfan, I almost respect Barnes for his accurate perception. He’s on the money.

  13. tractor57 02/22/2012 at 9:32 AM #

Proud of the team. Disappointed with the loss but then I’m always disappointed with a loss. Looking back to last summer when we had no real indication what this team could accomplish all I can say is it is refreshing to even be talking about a chance at a NCAAT bid.

Now I can pick a few points that in hindsight I would do differently but with the way UNX played last night I really don’t think they would matter.

  14. ncsu1987 02/22/2012 at 9:33 AM #

This thread demonstrates one of the things I like about the SFN community so much. Despite the perception and the presentation in the mainstream sports media, we are NOT the lunatic fringe.

We don’t cry wolf EVERY GAME, only when we can back it up.

There’s little, if any, mention on this thread of officiating. A lot of acknowledgement that UNX played a better game, with better talent, and some acknowledgement that we see a tremendous amount of improvement in this team.

We’re going to remember that Duke game for a long, long time.

  15. SuperStuff 02/22/2012 at 11:43 AM #

UNC-CH shot lights out from the 3 point line. They won that game fair & square.

  16. Thinkpack17 02/22/2012 at 11:54 AM #

AJ has had many-a-game when he looked like he did not belong on the floor in a ACC game. He also couldn’t keep Seth Curry or Kendall Marshall out of the lane with a shot gun. Those that think he is the answer have a very short memory.

AJ was trending on Twitter after the VA game. The hashtags were not kind. I am glad we have the kid but this ain’t a Drew 2 for Kendall Marshall swap. Both players have huge holes in their game.

  17. patientwuf 02/22/2012 at 12:13 PM #

I thought last nights game was one the better officiated games this year. We just got beat. Is it me or do all teams shoot well in the RBC? Man!!

One observation: Howell and Leslie seemed to get a little aggravated with officials in the 2nd half. Almost like they were expecting to get bad calls. We were a little whiney in the 2nd half.

“So, everyone respects us and brings their A game, or disrespects us, and assumes a good effort can beat the ol wolfpack.”

Been wondering the same thing coach.

  18. BJD95 02/22/2012 at 12:45 PM #

The simple truth is…we can’t take everything away from a team like UNC. So, while we switched up defenses a lot (very good idea when you’re outmanned), for the most part we left them WIDE-ASSED OPEN from the 3 point line – other than Harrison Barnes.

Now, as we saw last night – almost everyone in this league (certainly if they get a Hole scholarship) can make at least half of their uncontested, essentially “set shot” threes. But doing that allowed us to rebound effectively, and to effectively contain Zeller and Henson. They still had to make those threes, and to their credit – they did. Even so, it was a fair tradeoff.

We get UNC’s best game because Ol’ Roy hates us (like with Harrison Barnes, this makes me respect him, which in turn makes me hate him more because I can’t stand respecting anyone associated with UNC). He will remember that game he lost to Sid until the day he dies. He’s still pissed off about it.

That’s fine with me, because it will make the times we do eventually beat them all the sweeter. I don’t really want us to elevate by getting vulture wins. I want to live up to the state motto (Esse quam videri).

  19. BJD95 02/22/2012 at 12:47 PM #

I can count on one hand the number of officiating complaints, in the highly-trafficked game thread last night – despite that being the place where we are the most irrational and hot headed.

  20. patientwuf 02/22/2012 at 2:32 PM #

“But doing that allowed us to rebound effectively, and to effectively contain Zeller and Henson. They still had to make those threes, and to their credit – they did. Even so, it was a fair tradeoff. ”

Exactly what I saw last night. I like what I see on the court just need more pieces.

Hope to see Gott try and steal more minutes from Harris and de Thaey. Could only help down the stretch.

  21. TLeo 02/22/2012 at 4:24 PM #

The cynic in me says the game was fairly well officiated because the officials knew the head guy was going to be in the stands and gave their best effort to be fair for a change.
However, I must say like others here, I like that the team didn’t give up after falling behind but they just came up short against a better team last night.

  22. tractor57 02/22/2012 at 7:13 PM #

Well officiated for whatever reason. The baby blues were the better team last night but not by a lot. Much progress!!

  23. choppack1 02/22/2012 at 8:05 PM #

Quick question because I missed a lot of the game. Who was responsible for guarding Marshall last night?

  24. Thinkpack17 02/22/2012 at 8:09 PM #

^Lo Brown and AJ, but they also had help responsibility for a lot of the game.

A few last thoughts on Wood:

Apparently, opposing coaches have realized that the best way to defend Wood is to rotate the players who cover him. I realize he stands around a lot on some possessions, but there are others where he doesn’t stop running. Seemed like before he was wearing his defender down and taking advantage later in the 2nd half. Now it’s Wood that’s tired.

Unfortunately, he is a step too slow to get open on screens sometimes, the defense recovers before he gets the ball, maybe some double screens sometimes?

Another advantage, whoever is covering Wood, for the last several games, has apparently been told to never leave his side, EVER. That means no help from his side, couldn’t that be an advantage?

Everything has seemingly come together at the worst time. I will agree, he hasn’t looked the same since he missed those first FTs. He’s in a bad mental place, it seems. And when he does get open, his teammates aren’t looking for him anymore.

I actually think his D has been better the last few games.

Lastly, we know what he’s capable of, and what he’s meant to this team this season. Maybe I’m thinking with my heart, not my head, but can’t the coaches help get his mind right by drawing up just a couple of plays to get him open and back on track? Is it possible?
