Hess Fiasco Update – Yow has contacted Swofford; ACC to issue statement tonight [7:39pm]

ESPN is featuring Karl Hess’ ejection of Googs and Corch across all of their networks during college basketball coverage tonight. Kudos to Andy Katz who criticized Hess at halftime of the Florida-Arkansas game for needing to have thicker skin and pointing out the margin in today’s game was an astounding 18 points at the time of Hess’ antics.

A couple of quick mind-boggling statistics to ponder for a moment before the news updates —

* Chris Corchiani played in 124 games for NC State and NEVER got ejected.

* Despite some of the worst profanity and treatment that any college coach in America can imagine, Karl Hess has never ejected Coach K from a basketball game.

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong tweeted tonight:

Don’t know if it’s been reported elsewhere, but Debbie Yow confirms she’s had a convo with Swofford about the ejections. Said ‘more to come’

and then just followed up with the following:

NCSU issues statement saying in part that ACC has agreed to issue a statement tonight.

Joe Giglio has an update at the N&O tonight at this link but has followed up with more updates on his twitter account.

From @jpgiglio —

N.C. State AD Debbie Yow says the school has asked for an explanation for the Corchiani/Gugliotta incident but has not yet received one

Yow said: ‘We want to make sure our fans are being treated fairly.’

More from Yow: ‘I’ve been an AD for 21 years, 18 in the ACC, and I have never seen two people ejected like that.’

According to the ACC handbook, Hess has the power to eject fans, but also has to provide an explanation

If Hess interpreted the ACC handbook literally, Cameron would be empty 2 seconds into every game

Wasn’t picking on Duke there, just making a point … Hess is one of the best officials in the ACC but he made a mistake today

From Giglio’s article —

After the game, Corchiani was still looking for a reason why Hess stopped the game and asked him and Gugliotta to leave.

“I’d like to know why it happened,” Corchiani said. “You could hear us, there’s no doubt you could hear us, and we said something about three or four different times but not once did we use profanity and we never threatened him.”

Corchiani, who played point guard for the Wolfpack from 1988 to 1991 and is one of three players in ACC history with 1,000 assists, said he attended the game with his wife, Stewart, and 11-year-old daughter, Annabelle. Gugliotta, an All-ACC forward for the Wolfpack, played from 1989 to ’92 and was an NBA All-Star with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1997.

“We were just fans, cheering and yelling like everybody else,” Corchiani said.

After Hess’ confrontation with Corchiani and Gugliotta, N.C. State briefly cut into what was a 20-point Florida State lead in the second half. Scott Wood was fouled by Deividas Dulkys at the 6:40 mark, before Hess went to the scorer’s table, on a 3-point attempt.

The atmosphere in the arena was noticeably livelier after Corchiani and Gugliotta walked off the court and watched the remainder of the game from the tunnel leading to the N.C. State locker room.

Wood made all three of his free throws and followed up on the next trip with a 3-pointer to cut FSU’s advantage to 59-47 but that was as close as the Pack would get the rest of the way.

“If State would have come back and won, for me it would have been worth it,” Corchiani said.

Hess declined comment to an Associated Press reporter after the game. ACC head of officials John Clougherty also declined comment on Saturday afternoon.

N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow was trying to get an explanation from the conference on Saturday about the incident and was waiting to hear back from the league before commenting.

I am sure Hess will argue he notified the cop and the NCSU athletic official during the timeout that Corch and Googs were out of line. That will be his argument. Look, I do not care if it was “legal” or not. We all know it was patently wrong. The heck with Bilas and Phelps. If the statement issued by the ACC is not sufficient, which I am sure it won’t be, then let us hope Yow will fight for us.

Swofford is too busy rubbing his taint and sniffing his finger to issue that statement.

  3. BJD95 02/18/2012 at 9:58 PM #

The statement will infuriate and nobody (Yow included) will fight. Let alone what really needs to happen (leaving the ACC cabal).

  4. Dogbreath 02/18/2012 at 9:59 PM #

My theory on the delay is that Yow requested to see it before release. She didn’t like what she saw, and this is turning into quite the spat. If so, good for her. And us.

From a Seminole who watched today’s game, that ejection was bizarre. Given what students and fans say on a regular basis, I can’t imagine the Corchiani and Gugliotta said anything so beyond the norm that they should be removed.

I did not know who was being ejected until the announcers named them (I knew them as players, but didn’t recognize them in street clothes and a baseball cap). It seems to me that college athletes – current and former – have a more laid-back persepctive on things and would be the LAST ones to be out of control. They understand how it all works and don’t lose control.

Strange events. Get mad and take it out on the boys in pansy blue.

Yow strikes me as a fighter if pushed in a corner, and the last two games are indeed evidence that they’ve put us in the corner.

    I said it earlier.
This is going to be a whitewash and I would not be surprised if Googs and Corch are turned into the perps while Hess becomes the victim.

    The ACC blows beyond belief.

“Swofford is too busy rubbing his taint and sniffing his finger to issue that statement.”

I readily admit that my preferred brand of humor is “low brow”, to say the least, but this made me loller.

“Private entities (like sports conferences) can make rules about conduct and speech.”

So I am a private entity. If I hear someone talking about bananas and I really, really hate bananas so I request a police officer to escort them out of the public area, is the police officer allowed to comply with my request simply because I am a “private entity”.

They are just waiting for us to fall asleep so the impact of the fury is reduced. And not in the headlines. Typical Swofford and Clogherty.

ACC Statement: “We regret the incident that occurred earlier this afternoon. Comrade Hess should also have ejected Chucky Brown. Next time he will get them all. Good night.”

Bilas can kiss my ass. Of course he is speaking out of turn because he has not spoken to Gugs and Corch yet, but when did that ever stop him?

    The ACC makes me sick.

For me, the whole issue isn’t about free speech or any legal issues, or whether an official has the technical right to eject fans. It’s about a conference representative (this time an official) thinking they are going to bend us over yet again, and expect us to take it and say “thank you” yet again.

Karl Hess does a lot of games. I feel certain that today is NOT the first time that he’s heard it pretty heavily from fans and/or former players. So what made today different, Karl?

    yes.
    +1 Nolehoops.
use this for our next game.
don’t let Duke beat us 3 times.

Pride, in the case, no, assuming it is public property. In that case, general law applies. Now, if that situation occurred at your home, yes, then you could have an officer escort them away. The RBC cenfer is private property, so you can be asked to leave, per the contract you enter into by buying a ticket. I agree that there really is no first amendment issue here, although I am no law expert. We should really drop that line or arguement. Now that does.mean that Hess did not over step his bounds. Just not a first amendment issue.

Sooooo….don’t eat bananas at Pride’s house is the moral of this?

Since it will probably be spin sent out that will inevitably include that again State is some second rate program I’ll throw this lay this out there. An acquaintance shared with me friday that an official who once coached his daughters middle school team was making a name for himself and shooting up the ranks of big time officiating. He approached the ACC about work and they told him he would have to wait 8 years until further consideration. Well, by his third year as an SEC official they thought so highly of him that he was one of the ones doing last years SEC Championship game. Is it any wonder that the pieces of work doing ACC act like they do when they know everyone outside their cabal is getting the stiff arm?

    Wufpacker, yeah, sounds right.

“Under Rule 10, when circumstances warrant, an official has the authority to request home game management to eject fans when the behavior, in the officials’ judgement, is extreme or excessive. It’s unfortunate in this instance that ACC protocol of communicating directly with the home game management was not followed, and instead, a building security officer was solicited. We will re-communicate this policy with all officials to ensure proper protocol is followed.”

REQUEST! As in ask. An official does not have the right to have someone removed, nor the authority to direct the police power of the state. Some of you are not getting the point.

    Fuck bananas.

    Errr… Hess.

Screw it; I don’t even know what we’re talking about.

    Apparently the ACC doesn’t either.

Sorry ‘foose. Board is running a little slow, so it hadn’t shown up that you dropped that quote yet!
