Head of ACC Officials Confirms UNC is a “team that doesn’t foul much”

Lack of Fouls Key for UNC

“Historically, even looking back to when Dean Smith coached, UNC has just been a team that doesn’t foul that much,’’ said John Clougherty, the

That is a statement from the head of the ACC officials not some UNC PR firm. Can someone explain to me how 4 coaches over 53 years are all able to teach hundreds of players how to “not foul”?

In order to try to understand this a little better I looked at the stats.
UNC is called for the 8th fewest fouls in the nation. That means 337 schools are called for more fouls per game than UNC.

So maybe they play passively and thus can avoid foul trouble. Nope, they are ranked number 8 in the country for blocks per game and they are ranked number 3 in the nation for offensive rebounds per game. So in the two most aggressive categories in basketball they rank 8 and 3 but never commit fouls. How is this possible?

Clougherty also said that his officials study teams’ and players’ tendencies, so they know what to look for when it comes to fouls. And that they don’t favor anybody

So the refs come into a game with the preconceived notion that UNC does not commit fouls. UNC does not commit fouls because UNC is known not to commit fouls. That is how it is possible. It is a self fulfilling prophecy.

What kind of impact does this bias have on a team that plays UNC?
UNC has played 24 games. In those games they have shot an average of 24.75 free throws per game (leading the nation) and their opponents have shot 13.29 free throws per game. That means at UNC’s 65.4% free throw rate, teams will start the game with a 7 and a 1/2 point deficit.

They have had only one player all year who was disqualified because of fouls. So while other teams need players to step up when foul trouble hits. UNC just plays the same players because they never have to deal with foul trouble.

“I’m screaming all the time ‘Pressure, pressure. Don’t foul, don’t foul. Don’t reach, slide your feet, slide your feet. It’s the third most thing I’m yelling,’’ Williams said. “… You really have a better chance of getting what you want if you emphasize it the most.”

I should have known. It is just great coaching that allows UNC to avoid fouling, because if you make it your third most emphasized point, it will happen.

This reads just like an ‘Onion Sports’ article.

Except it’s real world. Frickin’ dadgum amazing (ROY ROY ROY).

Maybe studying “teams’ and players’ tendencies, so they know what to look for when it comes to fouls…” is business as usual for all paid basketball refs … I don’t know … I’ve never been one and I don’t know what goes into typical prep. Whether it is or not, I think it’s downright repugnant. I want refs who call what they see, not what they’re looking for (or ignore because it doesn’t fit the recorded tendencies).

McClougherty is saying that, regardless of what was about to happen on the floor, at tip-off his refs expected Richard Howell to commit far more fouls than Tyler Zeller in their last game. How about 5 to O! Sheesh!

  3. StandUpAndHowl 02/10/2012 at 10:15 PM #

Good thing we will be playing them fewer times in the future. One less rigged game on the schedule.

Here’s another way to look at what what Clougherty says. Look at how many players uNC put into the League. Outside of Kentucky recently with Calipari, I would wager that they have put more players in than anyone. Then look at how many national championships or the NCAA finish they have to show for the talent they have had. Tournament finishes should correlate with amount of NBA talent with other factors being even. When the Cheats get to the tournament they lose their homer refs and can’t get away with what gave Deano so many of those W’s in conference play. Their finish vs NBA player ratio is likely much lower than most all Div 1 teams. Any way you look at it, it’s a travesty for amateur sports in general, and the ACC in particular. Wait till Boeheim starts playing the holes. He’s the same color as Clemson who is probably in the top quartile for fouls called against them. Maybe we’ll see some Rick Barnes attitude from a coach with a lot more national clout. This could be fun!

PS It could also be partially attributed that the talent hasn’t had the best coaching they could have had, but the refereeing bias can be seen by any casual observer.

Geez, Ryebread, you just flipped my “Lee Harvey Oswald” switch. Absolutely ridiculous. Does Swofford get a cut for every NCAA tournament bid or Final 4 appearance for the flagship?

  6. runwiththepack 02/10/2012 at 10:46 PM #

Well said, Born. But Syracuse isn’t a Cow College, so the refs probably won’t scrutinize their players “tendencies”.

What can NCSU do to enhance our appeal to the Southeast Conference? The SEC doesn’t seem so enamored with USN&WR college rankings.

I would think that they would want to study tape of themselves to see if they are calling the game correctly. Checking what they are missing or doing right to continue to improve their own abilities not looking at tape to form or reinforce bias.

^Who does objective stuff like that??? C’mon. Getting stuff right is absolutely what we’re not about in the ACC.

This stuff just reinforces what a lot of us have said and thought.

“UNx is supposed to be good / get this win / have better players with better technique – so that’s how I’ll call the game! To hell with what actually happens!” Brilliant!

Clougherty’s statements make absolutely sick…and angry. What a tool.

I am perfectly fine with leaving this crooked ACC for the SEC…if they ever come calling. I dont really expect it, but you never know. They could tap into the Triangle TV market by going with State.

My Dad graduated from State in ’60. When I showed him this article his response was: “I remember back in the 50’s when we used to beat ’em now and then, it was true then.”

Not that I think it’ll do any good, but I’m gonna write some letters. We’ll see if I get any responses.

my mama used to say to me “sometimes things in life are just not fair” and “play the hand dealt you”. I believe that the light color blue causes an optical illusion that impacts the optic nerves making the refs unable to see fouls (like a cloaking shield). While red on the other hand sharpens the optic nerves and causes the refs to see fouls that do not exist. Why do bulls charge red cloak?? After years of research we should have our teams clothing be red and white striped. For more info see

I hope AD Debbie Yow looks at this in detail. It may be time for us to explore options in other conferences.

There will always be bias in any human judgement. It doesn’t matter who or what situation because we all have heuristics which influence or decisions….especially when we are making quick decisions and relying on what academics call system 1 (the seed of intuition and rapid thinking). It would be interesting to look at the acc across lots of years and see if there is a statitically significant Carolina effect. Does that data exist where it’s easy to obtain? Specifically: number of fouls called on each team, rank of each team, which is home and away (or neutral), which refs are calling it, attendance.

  15. IMFletcherWolf 02/11/2012 at 9:58 AM #

My father always said that UNC-CH got a disproportionate amount of favorable calls b/c the refs “know” that they have the better players and therefore, the better players don’t have to foul. You know like: that hole player couldn’t have hit the State player on the arm – he’s too good for that, so I won’t whistle him for a foul.

This article and statement from the ACC only re-enforce what most of us have seen our entire lives.

  16. Hungwolf 02/11/2012 at 11:02 AM #

Every ACC coach fired for not winning should sue the league. Oliver Purnell and Rick Barnes were just validated for moving to schools outside the ACC.

Every ACC school besides UNC should be convening to form a confernce without UNC or should be moving to fire Swofford. Remember UNC wins the right way and doesn’t cheat either!

  17. WV Wolf 02/11/2012 at 1:07 PM #

Shouldn’t a game be officiated in a vacuum? Shouldn’t a foul be a foul no matter the player, team or time on the clock? If so, Clougherty admits that ACC officials do the exact opposite of this.

Expansion and stuff like the officiating and scheduling is slowly killing my interest in ACC basketball.

  18. TheAliasTroll 02/11/2012 at 7:55 PM #

This is disgusting. I hope somebody sends this to Yow. This kind of story needs to stay at the top of SFN for a LONG time.

This is an outrage! If a ref goes into a game with the mindset that a team has certain tendencies regarding fouling, then he is certain to go easy on them when it comes to calling fouls against them.

Sometimes you can tell that a ref made up his mind to call the foul before it even happened, like on a fast break when the defender pretty much has no other choice than to foul. I think they do this so they can blow the whistle in a timely fashion rather than making a delayed call after their mind has actually processed what happened. When you blow the whistle late, half the audience is going to be very unhappy about it.

Having said all that, if the ref is making up his mind before fouls happen, and they are already biased toward one team that they “know” doesn’t foul often, they are going to be less likely to blow that whistle like they would against other teams.

It’s just an outrage that they even said all this.

Let me get this right… this guy just said 1-we study tendancies and what to look for and 2-we’ve concluded UNC does not foul much(implied we don’t look to call many on UNC).

If that is not the dummest thing to admit to. If the other 11 coaches don’t request all new refs then that is just stupid IMO.

  21. Howler 02/11/2012 at 9:36 PM #

I study tendencies too, and I have determined that the stable of refs tend to suck.

  22. Cincinnati Wolf 02/11/2012 at 11:56 PM #

Maybe the refs have been hypnotized to go easy on the baby blue and they just don’t see it. I remember an X-Files episode where this guy played mind tricks and he caused this guy to not see Cerulean Blue. Guess what? Cerulean Blue is within the range of Carolina Blue.

What is funny is the Butch Davis didn’t get the memo. No wonder his teams sucked, they had too much navy blue so those hypnotized refs would think they were Duke and ring them up.

  23. turfpack 02/12/2012 at 1:08 AM #

And Head Ref says Carowhina does foul much…..Ok and thats news?
We’ve seen the Uncheats bias for years…..something new?

  24. Hungwolf 02/12/2012 at 11:47 AM #

If what Cloughtery said were true then NBA scouts and coaches would be saying the same. If UNC-CHeat players were so well coached and trained not to foul then wouldn’t that carry over to the NBA? The fact is that is has not! Felton for example made many rookie mistakes and stupid fouls while here in town with the Bobcats. Where was the great coaching in that example? Hansborough is the same, NBA refs call him for fouls that were never/seldom called on him in the ACC, he has also had to correct the Hansborough Shuffle as to not get called for walking in the NBA.

I will putting a letter out to Debbie Yow and copying the ACC office. It is a disgrace to have the head of officials of a major college conference come out and confirm officiating bias that is not supported by facts or evidence. He should be fired, Swofford should be fired, and the whole conference officiating system over hauled.

  25. Rick 02/12/2012 at 1:50 PM #

I compared NCSU To UNC to look at the picture a little better.
UNC gets called for 14.5 fouls per game.
NCSU gets called for 16.2 fouls per game.

UNC get more offensive rebounds (16.3 to 12.0), more steals (7.3 to 7.2) and more blocks (6.1 to 4.3) and yet gets called for fewer fouls.
I guess it is because of all that great coaching.
