ACC’s so called ‘statement’ another slap in the face to NC State (10:10pm)

Why did they f***ing bother? In this statement the conference weasels its way into even more disdain from fans focusing on Karl Hess’ authority to remove Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta, while completely ignoring his controversial judgement to do so.

—————————————-

Feb. 18, 2012

Statement from ACC Supervisor of Officials John Clougherty on the ejection that took place at today’s Florida State at NC State men’s basketball game:

“Under Rule 10, when circumstances warrant, an official has the authority to request home game management to eject fans when the behavior, in the officials’ judgement, is extreme or excessive. It’s unfortunate in this instance that ACC protocol of communicating directly with the home game management was not followed, and instead, a building security officer was solicited. We will re-communicate this policy with all officials to ensure proper protocol is followed.”

—————————————-

Sadly, one of the best explanations of the statement came from the twitter account of a UNC fan:

So, instead of “Hess was wrong to throw them out,” the ACC’s position is “Hess threw them out wrong”?

—————————————-

Another Tar heel homer also agreed when WRAL’s @ErinESummers used the following description of the statement:

ACC stands behind Hess and does not question/comment on his judgment to eject Corch, Gugs but instead comments on how it was done improperly

She also seems to agree with all of WolfpackNation’s characteristic of this farse –

that’s the official release and it is absolutely lame

—————————————-

So…after the ACC has had a chance to comment on the issue, the primary question still remains — EXACTLY WHY did Karl Hess have Corchiani and Gugliotta removed today? Corch & Googs have taken the stance to go on the record to publicly state that no curse words were used or threatening statements. This account of the situation seems to have been corroborated by multiple eye-witness accounts of people on press row and around the incident.

So, WHY is the ACC and Karl Hess not expected to be held accountable to explain the specifics of the situation that Hess CHOSE to initiate?

—————————————-

I will ask the same question that was being asked on the blog on Thursday night — why do NC State fans, leaders and administrators CONTINUE to participate in an affiliation that is so dis-respectful and slanted against us? Why do we keep fooling ourselves into believing that we are a part of anything less rigged than professional wrestling at this point?

At duke they chant “ref you suck”. Should the ref not halt the game and disqualify duke and give the win to the opposing team and empty the stadium????

  2. Wolfacct 02/19/2012 at 8:09 AM #

NCSU and VT to the SEC; FSU and Clemson to the Big 12. MD and BC to the Big 10. Screw the ACC. We’ve all seen what “tradition” and being a “founding member” gets ‘ya.

“Is anyone else secretly happy that something like this happened? I hate that it happened to those 2 guys for sure. But, we’ve all been tired of this kind of crap”

I thought about this but since it is obvious nothing is going to be done then it is irrelevant. All it did was prove what a farce the ACC has become.

  4. Avid109 02/19/2012 at 8:30 AM #

After the ACC’s pathetic response, the best thing that we can do as fans is keep the conversation going ahead of the UNX game. If enough State fans make their desire to leave the ACC known in public (on Facebook, letters to their local newspaper, etc.), the issue ought to be mentioned during the UNX game broadcast. That would at least let a many more people know that a sizable chunk of the Wolfpack fanbase is not happy with the ACC.

If public officials know that a significant number of supporters are unhappy, they are more apt to press for changes instead of just waiting for the storm to pass.

At first when I saw it during the game I thought “only if they(C&G) had used to worst of the worst profanity during the game and repeatedly said it over and over again to the ref would they be thrown out” and I concluded that they must have done that otherwise simple criticism or harsh criticism would surely not get one ejected from a game. I thought, maybe they are highly intoxicated. I have been to many ACC basketball games and high school basketball games and sat right at court side and screamed at the ref all night. A chorus of “ref you suck”. I was a member of PEST in 1983 (PACK ELITE SUPPORT TEAM).

HOWEVER, when I saw all the children sitting around them and realized C&G were there with their families I knew they did not utter one profane or vulgar word. Neither of them did it when they were on the court. While C may be a bit of a person that mouths off, G is actually a quite and reserve person. As for the drunk, you can clearly see that as they walked off the court that they were as stone sober as a judge on sunday morning teaching sunday school class.

Hess must have been having a bad day. Maybe he was constipated or had an ingrown toenail or had an upset stomach or started off his day by getting up and stepping on a sandspur. Who knows, but I for one want a full investigation and I want and demand an explanation for a set of events I have never seen unfold at a game. Ejections happen only when someone is so disruptive (throwing things on the court and/or excessive drunkenness).

  6. Rick 02/19/2012 at 8:38 AM #

You have not seen bad reffing until you see what is about to happen to us. The refs are going to support their co-worker by making NCSU look as bad as they can. We are going to be so thoroughly screwed by the refs, we will not be able to walk for weeks.

    Mark my words.

  7. wolfmanmat 02/19/2012 at 8:39 AM #

Why don’t we ever look at things with a positive spin? Hess throwing out 2 NCSU greats only gets the program more attention. It’s not a bad thing. Contrary to what some believe, there is no UNC/Duke conspiracy in the ACC. The reason they win is talent. They have teams with 5+ McDonalds All Americans on them and the rest of the ACC has 3 between them ALL. 2011 Duke had 3 McDs and UNC had 2. The rest of the ACC had 0. 2010 Duke had 1, Carolina had 3, State had 1. No other ACC school had any. 2009 Duke had 2, UNC had 4, GT had 1 year Favors and Clemson had 1, FSU had 1. No other ACC school with any. John Swofford is bringing in basketball programs in Pitt/Cuse. I don’t like the guy alot, but he’s trying to beef up basketball after his attempt to beef up football(which is why VT/Miami/FSU/BC are in the conference) has not really worked out and really just weakened the ACC in basketball. The problem in the ACC is that the other schools aren’t getting talent. It’s not the ACCs fault that kids want to go to Duke and UNC. It is the ACCs fault that the football additions have made the conference weak at basketball. Anyway, there is a positive out of Corch and Gugs…they represent when State was relevant and any press they get is good for State.

I have actually never been a big proponent of moving to the SEC before, but now I am. We’ve lost our traditional ACC rivals due to expansion, etc. I think a once of year OOC game against the Holes (similar to Clemson/USC or Ga. Tech/UGa or FSU/Florida would satify me).

Southeastern Conference. We would be relevant nationally in HOOPS, and in a short time I think we’d be relevant (nationally) in Football. If we stay in the ACC, I doubt we will ever be relevant nationally in Football, and we will always be second fiddle to UNCheat/Puke due to the powers that be.

    SEC! Now!

  9. primacyone 02/19/2012 at 9:01 AM #

Hey Cloughtery – Please read the first sentence of Rule 10 again:

    “….”Under Rule 10, when circumstances warrant,….”

I don’t see that aspect of the rule being the case yesterday.

  10. Wulfpack 02/19/2012 at 9:02 AM #

“In response, Yow said in an email to The Associated Press that she appreciated Clougherty’s comments, she expects that protocol to be followed at future NC State games and that Swofford and Hicks understand her school’s concerns.”

  11. Wulfpack 02/19/2012 at 9:05 AM #

And heck no I’m not happy this happened. It’s blatant disrespect, both the ejection and the ACC’s wholly insufficient response. Nothing will be done about this. We are totally irrelevant, which is why some of us see little reason to stay in this bushleague.

  12. TOBtime 02/19/2012 at 9:06 AM #

^^Amen Rick. Even if H-@ss-hole gets banned/reprimanded/whatever there will be a show of force/unity by ACC clowndom(supposed officiating) to put us in our place. After the typical unx written response I don’t even see a reprimand coming.

Duke and unx win only on talent. Right. Sure takes talent to climb a guys back.

  13. runwiththepack 02/19/2012 at 9:12 AM #

    haha!

Get all the “state”, “A&M”, old bible colleges, and “tech” schools to form a new conference. WFU, FSU, GT, NCSU, VT, MS St. LSU, and Liberty. Just threw that last one in there – but they definitely seem to be on the rise. A conference we can all love, hopefully, and restore the round-robin.

I’m not serious, but i would like being in a conference with all those schools.

With regards to going to the SEC, i would hope that they would be interested in us, even if it doesn’t pan out. I would guess that they would prefer VA Tech first, which would push their TV markets through the state of NC and into VA, and maybe pull in some hillbillies in WV.

By the time we hear anything substantial about a move to the SEC, wouldn’t it already be a dun deal?

  14. Rick 02/19/2012 at 9:17 AM #

The ACC has put us in our place. They have shown us we are second rate citizens and they are really going to put the foot on our throat Tuesday.

  15. Ed89 02/19/2012 at 9:20 AM #

I saw this on an ESPN article comment section. I think it is great!

“I’m sure they didn’t pay for those seats, but it would be funny to see them in recliners somewhere near the floor for next game, preferably with megaphones.”

I mean that would be AWESOME!!

  16. runwiththepack 02/19/2012 at 9:24 AM #

Googs and Fire look like they might still be able to get on the court and show some moves. Our old boys look pretty good for old men, thankfully.

Pack fans will never forget this, which goes without saying. We will still be talking about this when we’re back in diapers, (those of us who aren’t already back in diapers).

This is the only ACC member (up to that time, that i know of) that had a touchdown taken off the scoreboard (at UNC, of course, when “hot-tub” was our rb).

And now this! The only people i have ever seen thrown out of any game were those who were obviously drunk&profane and/or throwing junk – or irritating Roy Williams. I don’t think there would be half of Maryland fans remaining in their seats if they were thrown out for the same reason as was Googs and Corch.

These old heroes of ours were doing neither of the above, and Roy wasn’t even in the building, i don’t think.

Another ACC FIRST!!! to add to the other ACC firsts NCSU can claim. I was there yesterday, and also at the UNC game where T.A.’s TD was removed (my first fb game @unc).

I think we all should look forward to the next state game Hess calls on our home court…will be a long day for him. We are not going to win by waging a war on the refs, we are going to win with more talent, Gott and the rest of the staff coaching well and more mental focus/ swagger. Short term they have to figure out how to get Wood to elevate his game in these big games. He has disappeared in the big ones this year. We need him and Howell to man up against UNX, I know CJ and Zo will bring it.

  18. Ed89 02/19/2012 at 9:30 AM #

    runwiththepack,
WFU? They are not an Aggie school. And Liberty???? That’s where the idiot, Hess, went….

    SEC.

I have actually never been a big proponent of moving to the SEC before, but now I am. We’ve lost our traditional ACC rivals due to expansion, etc. I think a once of year OOC game against the Holes (similar to Clemson/USC or Ga. Tech/UGa or FSU/Florida would satify me).

    wolfmanmat,

what Mickie D doesn’t want to go to a rich school where the ref may as well put 10 points on the scoreboard for your team before tip-off?

This favoritism not only has helped get them where they are, but helps keep them there, too. These favorite schools also get much more favorable press for the good they do, as well as a lot less negative press for when their “squeaky clean” programs run afoul.

I know it has a lot to do with their talent. But I have said for years that if you show a bunch of these ACC unc games to refs in, let’s say Bulgaria or Estonia, where they might not even know about the vaunted unc rep, i would expect that they would say: “the refs sure like these light blue players.

  20. GoldenChain 02/19/2012 at 9:36 AM #

If we ever leave the ACC it shouldn’t be because we hotheadedly left because we didn’t like the officiating in one of the 24 varsity sports we participate in.
I understand under the emotion of the moment how folks could think this (especially if they thought we should leave anyway).

That being said perhaps this is a good thing to precipitate an overall review of the basketball officiating.

In addition this was probably the most stupid thing Hess could do! hess should leave the ACC for his own sake and the other officials. They are now marked men and fans (students) will be trying to get tossed as a badge of honor.

  21. state73 02/19/2012 at 9:37 AM #

The ACC’s reply was exactly what I expected. They used the UNC-CHeat model, deny anything of importance happened by changing the focus and then it will all be over by friday.

Not happy about yow’s statement. It has the ring of “thank-you sir! May I have another?”

I’m a Tar Heel fan, but I must say–I could not agree with you guys more. Karl Hess has to go.

This is bigger than whether you root for Carolina, State, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech–ANYBODY. If you live or have lived in the state of North Carolina, you know that college basketball rules in that area. It’s who we are. (I lived in NC until age 27.) You can’t have an arse-clown like this freak show mucking it up for us & just let it happen.

If this clown isn’t out of a job, then we need to boo him EVERY GAME he referees. Carolina fans, boo him at the Smith Center. Duke fans, boo him at Cameron. Wake fans, boo him at Lawrence-Joel. Every single time he makes a questionable call, we need to chant “Karl Hess Sucks” so loud the TV and radio announcers can’t be heard because of it.

Frankly, I think even if there were a few curse words said by Tom or Chris, so what? You can’t say “that call’s bullspit” without being ejected? Really? That’s just ridiculous on so many levels. Throwing objects on the floor, telling Harrison Barnes or Austin Rivers “your mother was fun last night”–okay, maybe then. Otherwise, the fans are there to make noise, referees are there to call the game–that’s it.

This is the very reason that many are at the point of trying to move or taking a real stand against the ACC commissioner and BOG. The BS has to stop. Either stand up to the oppression or fold up our sports programs all together. If the SEC comes calling pony up the 20 million and take the hike to the SEC.

If the floor is covered with cups and ice during the Carolina game I for one will not be surprised…..what are they going to do….empty the whole arena and play the game, give Carolina the forfeit, either way the National media will have a field day with the fiasco that the ACC has become.

    Follow Texas A&M’s lead…!

They put up with the Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas Bull$#!t for long enough, and said screw you. We need to follow their lead.
