ACC Scheduling After Pitt & Syracuse Joins

The ACC has released information on the future scheduling plans for the conference after the addition of Pitt And Syracuse. You can read the linked article for more detailed information but here are the basics.

Football
Syracuse will join the Wolfpack in the Atlantic division and Pitt will be in the Coastal.

The conference schedule will move up to 9 games. Each team will play the 6 other teams in their division and 3 games in the opposite division (1 against the primary crossover partner and 2 rotating).

Men’s & Women’s Basketball
The basketball schedule will be going to 18 games. Each school will have a primary partner that they will play home and away and will play the other 12 schools at least once on a rotating schedule. NC State’s primary partner will be Wake Forest. Yes, that means NC State and North Carolina will no longer play twice a year home and away.

Olympic Sports
Other than baseball, teams will play every school at least once. The ACC will also start a gymnastics conference championship, with the addition of Pitt the conference will now have 4 teams that participate in gymnastics.

V would probably agree with the schedule. Remember we used to play UNC at least 2-4 times a year with 2 conference games, Dixe Classic, and ACCT. V didn’t like that and V was more national in his thinking also. I don’t see how we lose much when we are replacing one game and getting to play Syracuse and Pitt. I’d much rather watch us play Duke, Pitt, Unc, and Syr every year than playing UNC multiple times instead. Especially given the talent we got coming in and the upward trend it appears out basketball program is on. I think it gives us more national exposure for recruiting also in both football and basketball. I like the expansion.

    So you’re saying there’s a chance!

    Thank you Swofford.

We should just drop the pretence and rename the conference “ESPN East”

“Maryland really got screwed. They lost their annual home and home rivalry with Duke and got Pitt instead.

Maryland and Pitt have played basketball 6 times. They haven’t played each other in 13 years and that was in the Puerto Rico Shootout. They last played a home and home series in 1980 and 1981. John Swofford and the ACC now has them as rivals. WTF?

Wow Maryland got F’d! They deserve it though!

Not really pissed about not playing UNC in Bball twice a year. Makes it easier for us to get into the NCAA and a better seed in the ACC tourney. Because UNC rapes our faces. Lets be honest.

The only way this irritates me is if UNC goes on a downward trend after Roy leaves and we cant take advantage of it twice every year.

These changes are only natural when forced to expand the conference.

The Dixie Classic was long gone before V got here.

“I can see scenarios where MD and Pitt travel together down to FSU and Miami. Once plays at FSU on Thursday night and at Miami on Sunday.”

    I can’t.

The ACC (swofford) will not stop until NCSU is a conference also ran. I refuse to capitalize his name.

But things change and will again. We can’t bring back the 60s, 70s and 80s.

So let’s whup wake, build our program, and when our program is back where it should be, then it will be time to get the rivalry going. And I do think now would be a great time to bring back the big 4. We can make it Duke and Wake, UNC and State, (and switch each year just leaving the official rivalrys out of the combination) and hopefully it will be the Pack and Duke in the finals. That gets us two games for the year w ea team plus those we beat in the Tourny.

The important things to remember in this.

    Money.
Swofford is a hole and always will be a hole.
    Money.
    ESPN, Duke and UNcheat.
    Money.
Swofford is a hole and always will be a hole.

I used to watch ESPN,(Sportcenter in particular) to get sports info. Now, they have become so self-promoting, loud mouthed, & hole loving, I only watch football games or the Pack on their channels. They can shove the rest of their programming sideways!!!!

    “We can’t bring back the 60s, 70s and 80s.”

Better include the 50s in there, too, as that is when Case/State started it all.

I bet somewhere in the fine print, duke & the holes play basketball like 6 times a season… 2 home, 2 away, 1 on an aircraft carrier crossing the Atlantic, & 1 in the Coliseum in Rome…

Those lamenting that Wake is our primary B-ball partner, it sucks worse to be Maryland. Pitt has never been even close to a rival for them.

Not scheduling the boys from Chapel Hell, twice in basketball is a good thing for now. We have been anything but a rival the last several years, and totally shamed by them at home/away. Even the first round this year. So until we regain our reputation as a power. We should be happy with one game. Hopefully Gott can get it done.

    “VaWolf82 Says:
February 3rd, 2012 at 3:30 pm VAWolf82: I know a lot of NC State fans are mad,

Anyone that is mad is either stupid or hasn’t had a chance to think about the implications of adding two more teams.”

I don’t see why have a different opinion results in people being called stupid.

FWIW I think it is a sad day to see NC State and UNC not play a home/away series in the ACC. Hopefully for regaining the day where UNC fans will be happy that they do not have to play us 2x a season.

Let’s look at the positive – I too was thinking about bringing back the Dixie Classic. As mentioned earlier, Greensboro would be a perfect host site for a 3 day tournament. If I’m thinking correctly, the old Dixie Classic was held after Christmas. Because of bowls, the tournament would probably need to be at a different time. If we could talk the other Big 4 schools into it, the tournament would be a huge potential success. Right now, I know that the NCAA allows teams to count scheduling one tournament as just one of their scheduled games (basically you get 2 free games). Maybe the NCAA would up the exemption to two tournaments, as long as one is regional. The money that these tournaments could make and the basketball that they could provide would be outstanding for the participating programs. It is the least they could do for basketball after all of this conference realignment mess.

A differing opinion is fine. The inability to recognize the obvious is something else entirely…especially when I laid out the obvious implications of adding Pitt/Syr several weeks ago.

Jpgigalo has a good idea. Make new divisions, old acc and new acc.

State, Duke, Wake, unc-ch, Clemson, UVA, Md

Gt, vt, fsu, Miami, bc, cuse, Pitt.

Round robin for divisions, other teams play once a year.

Would make football a little lopsided though.

Just saw this and my immediate reaction is that this is one more reason to seriously consider an SEC move if they happen to come calling.

Additionally, basketball post-season is set up such that an “easier” schedule doesn’t really help you. A loss against a power does no harm. All you lose is the potential for a quality win. And value for the season ticketholder.

But as VA noted – completely foreseeable and inevitable. One less tether cable to resist my feverish prayers to one day join the SEC. 🙂

OMG…lush hit it. Classic ACC vs New ACC.
CACC is more hoops and NACC is more kicks.
yeah, it’s kinda crazy and it might work.
    worst case: ESPN buys in.

Correection on my previous post. I accidently wrote Dixie Classic. I meant Big Four which was played in December before ACC play started.

V mentions it in his book.
V writes: “..we had a little tournament in December called the Big Four: Carolina, Duke, us, and Wake Forest. It wasn’t enough to play each other in the regular season and maybe once in the ACC tournament. Oh no. We had to play each other another time…..”

This just backs up my “Hire Manny Diaz and go to the SEC” theory even more. I’m done with this sorry conference run by Swofford.

SEC!!! Manny D!!! SEC!!! Manny D!!! SEC!!! Manny D!!!
