ACC: Hess reprimanded (8pm Update)

8pm Update:
J.P. Giglio writes that Gugs and Fire were kicked out for “excessive demonstration” (N&O):

In the email to N.C. State, Hess wrote:

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a statement on Monday night about Hess’ role in the ejection.

“Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection,” Swofford’s statement read.

“This reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol. We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.”

As further evidence this is nothing but typical ACC bullshit, here are two examples of regular fan behavior that is in fact, not considered “excessive demonstration” by the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is Gugs and Fire completely out of control — just look at that body language!

Not sure what’s changed since the statement Saturday Night — other than I think the ACC expected us to get over this, ignoring the fact we haven’t the proclivity for getting over stuff — but Karl Hess got a slap on the wrist (WRAL):

The Atlantic Coast Conference has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former North Carolina State stars from the stands during a weekend game.

In a statement Monday night, the league said it had conducted a “thorough review” of the events leading up to Hess’ ejections of former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from seats behind the scorer’s table during Saturday’s loss to Florida State.

The reprimand doesn’t reveal a reason why Hess ejected Corchiani and Gugliotta…

    Actually I am being legit. I don’t trust our drive by media. I think State Fan Nation is a representation of the emerging web based media and has a legit press related right to gather news. I was hoping to plant a seed in those who moderate this site. I read this site more than I read any local or regional media outlet. I’d rather read the story here or WRAL. ANYBODY can look up this guys phone numbers I just produced. I don’t know if they’re right, but a quick :15 second search produced the numbers.

    This statement actually has me more riled up than ever. Swofford is basically saying that they were aggressive and threatening him. They really are just trapped in a baby blue colored bubble. Unbelievable.

    You really are a moron. If you watched the game and didn’t see what happened then there is no use in explaining to you what everybody else saw.

    Hess’s ‘after the fact’ explaination is total BS as some sort of justification for his stupidity.
    The status quo man stands behind his status quo ref. The member institution is left in the learch.

    Maybe they got booted because they were outliers… at Cameron, every single f’ing person behind the scorers table is leaning up and over it, shaking & waving their hands, screaming uncontrollably. Googs & Corch do it, but everyone else is sitting down… and suddenly they look like a threat.

    Or it’s all just bullshit, and further proof of the double standard.

    We must keep up the pressure on Swofford and expose the ACC’s hypocrisy. They think this is a storm in a teacup. I think this is just the beginning. We, the WolfPack fans, can show 20000 “excessive” demonstrators.

    Hess is a symptom, the Swofford cabal and the ACC are the disease. Don’t do anything (like harrassing phone calls) to shift who’s wearing the white hat in all of this.

    I think it’s time to start up a new website… FireSwofford.com . Could place a paypal donate thing on there and with donations put up billboards near the universities in the ACC sans the unc homers. Could sell t shirts in the colors of each of the acc schools with fire swofford on them. Get a bunch of them in the stands and the ADs of the schools would take notice that the grassroots (astroturf ers) are fed up. What we need is a ground swell. Get off our butts with just bitching about all of this and actually DO something. The most effective would be to sway public opinion outside of just this environment. I’m sure there are lots of fans at the other schools who would follow suit.

    All this talk about fouls per game, and fouls called against teams that don’t wear blue…that’s only part of the story. What ticks me off is the no-call…whether Henson or Zeller or Plumlee…a no-call is as bad as a bogus call….whether it is an over the back, on the back, reach around or hack on the arm. Now we hear Clougherty telling us that for 50 years, 4 coaches and hundreds of players…Carolina just doesn’t foul. And refs watch game videos to prepare for what to look for regarding fouling tendencies, not missed calls that should have been whistled. And yesterday’s quote from Clougherty that If Hess sees it and thinks its a foul, it probably IS a foul, only reinforces our case that the deck is stacked…if Hess sees it or chooses to ignore it and doesn’t call it or chooses not to call it because of the league script then it definitely ISN’T a foul.

    Where is beeejay say facebook post this morning. I played it last night and it was GREAT.

    Here is a bit of historical photo evidence that Ref. Hess was once a fan of Googs’. I shot this picture at the ACC Tournament in 2007 and still have the signed Googs “GO WOLFPACK” sign.

    We need to be loud, but not vulgar, obnoxious, and rude. All that will do is turn the attention back on us. Witty comments about Huckleberry, the players, the putridness of their school colors, the UNCheat scandal, and telling the refs they suck are OK, but please don’t let your emotion make you carry it too far. Coaches’ wives, players’ moms, etc. should be off limits.
