ACC: Hess reprimanded (8pm Update)

8pm Update:
J.P. Giglio writes that Gugs and Fire were kicked out for “excessive demonstration” (N&O):

In the email to N.C. State, Hess wrote:

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a statement on Monday night about Hess’ role in the ejection.

“Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection,” Swofford’s statement read.

“This reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol. We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.”

As further evidence this is nothing but typical ACC bullshit, here are two examples of regular fan behavior that is in fact, not considered “excessive demonstration” by the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is Gugs and Fire completely out of control — just look at that body language!

Out of control!

Hess must not have been working this game.

Not sure what’s changed since the statement Saturday Night — other than I think the ACC expected us to get over this, ignoring the fact we haven’t the proclivity for getting over stuff — but Karl Hess got a slap on the wrist (WRAL):

The Atlantic Coast Conference has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former North Carolina State stars from the stands during a weekend game.

In a statement Monday night, the league said it had conducted a “thorough review” of the events leading up to Hess’ ejections of former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from seats behind the scorer’s table during Saturday’s loss to Florida State.

The reprimand doesn’t reveal a reason why Hess ejected Corchiani and Gugliotta…

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong says via Twitter (@ArmstrongWTVD):

Just got word from State that the ACC is expected to release more info about Saturday’s ejections tonight.

Stay tuned.  I think we can sum up State fans’ reaction to the ACC’s latest statement:

That is EXACTLY what I expected – but it isn’t sufficient.

I live near Tallahassee FL, the local talk show guys for the FSU flagship’s take on the incident is that it is typical of ACC refs. Their opinion of the refs is that they are uniformly bad, in the ACC, in b-ball and football and something needs to be done about it.

  3. redcanine 02/20/2012 at 8:47 PM #

I don’t get the “best on-court offical” tag. Where else do they work?

  4. StandUpAndHowl 02/20/2012 at 8:48 PM #

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table.”

Pull for your team, but not too much. By this explanation you could toss anyone who stands up and boos.

  5. wilmwolf80 02/20/2012 at 8:49 PM #

They came right up to the scorer’s table? They were sitting behind the scorer’s table. They just stood up!!! There is no way that we can let this go with this BS explanation.

    Johnny “the Honey Badger” Swofford

Johnny don’t give a ****, Johnny does what he wants

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

So is this what they are using to say the ref. felt threatened or something and was justified in his ejection decision?

  8. Old MacDonald 02/20/2012 at 8:51 PM #

Somehow the ACC manages to come across worse with every release.

  9. wilmwolf80 02/20/2012 at 8:51 PM #

His statement does offer a small glimpse into the true cause of his action. The “incitement of the crowd” part reveals that he threw them out exactly because of who they were, not what they were doing. He treated them as if they were there representing the University, not as fans.

Bull$@$#!!! We can’t accept this. With this kind of statement Googs and Corch will go down to history as “guilty”. Dr. Yow sure has a lot of work left to do about this.

My understanding of the statement is that Hess is the best on-court official which means he doesn’t or rarely makes mistake with his judgement. Therefore, his decision was legitimate except the protocol. And therefore Googs and Corch had done something wrong that deserves the ejection.

So, what had gone wrong if any at all.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE WHOLE THING
The acc will make a half-hearted stab at appeasing the masses with trite and insincere statements that ultimately contain little or no truth and whose effect will be minimal at best. The ACC might even conduct a “thorough” investigation of the matter and consider recommendations from some blue ribbon panel of has beens and wanna bees. In the end, they will do nothing and say nothing all the while pretending they are doing everything and saying everything. The truth of the matter is they will be uttering nonsense to muddle the situation so as to purposely avoiding any action. In the end all we will get is some lame and inept “dog and pony show” for a action of a referee that was out of control and whose ego could not take what is in most cases at sporting events would be passed over as a common everyday occurrence. This is evident to even the most insensitive clod and NCSU haters and to all UNC fans.

They still haven’t said he did anything wrong other than break protocol. They reprimanded him for making a decision the wrong way and then praised his decision-making ability. All they did was take the statement from Clougherty, add “he has been reprimanded” and “he’s one of the best officials in the country.” There is nothing satisfying about this.

  13. TheCOWDOG 02/20/2012 at 9:00 PM #

    F*** this. And f*** Swofford.

  14. gtspack 02/20/2012 at 9:00 PM #

“excessive demonstration” Have they ever been to a duke game??? They would need a swat team to kick everyone out.

  15. blpack 02/20/2012 at 9:02 PM #

They want this to just go away.

  16. wpakgirl 02/20/2012 at 9:02 PM #

This is pure BS. Did the scoring table complain? Did anyone complain other than Hess?

  17. method1220 02/20/2012 at 9:03 PM #

Defuse, knucklehead. You defuse a situation (or a bomb); flatulence, on the other hand, diffuses. But I’ll bet his Swahili is flawless.

  18. tractor57 02/20/2012 at 9:03 PM #

    Reclaim the ACC!

  19. IamGumbyDangit 02/20/2012 at 9:05 PM #

OK so let’s get this straight… Hess issued a warning…but to a COP at the end of the FSU bench, NOT to Googs and Corch…then ejected Googs and Corch when they failed to abide by the warning that was never given to them…

Anyone besides me feel like Mugatu?

  20. TLeo 02/20/2012 at 9:07 PM #

This “reprimand” is total bullsh** and pretty much what we have come to expect from that ass Swofford. It was totally phrased to make Googs and Corch out to be out of control fans when clearly they were not. F* the ACC and Swofford. Nothing is going to change until all the other schools band together and get rid of Swofford and probably all the other officials over in the conference office. I would love to see State, WF, VT, and others tell the ACC to F off and pull out and form another conference without UNC and Duke. This is just another slap in the face to State by that piece of crap Swofford and I can’t see how anyone sit back and excuse this stuff any longer.

  21. Old MacDonald 02/20/2012 at 9:10 PM #

The ACC needs a PR firm. They could not have fucked this thing up worse if they tried.

  22. tractor57 02/20/2012 at 9:11 PM #

I differ a bit. Rather than F the ACC reclaim the ACC!

  23. redcanine 02/20/2012 at 9:29 PM #

If Woody Durham or Eric Montross cheers too loudly tomorrow, we should have the RPD escort them from the gym. Since we are all now familiar with protocol, what’s stopping us from taking advantage of it?

  24. TOBtime 02/20/2012 at 9:31 PM #

With the proximity of the 2 to the scorers table it should be easy to get camera footage that demonstrates the “excessive” behaviour rabbit-ears refers to. If it doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t, SUE. Drop to the level of every other nickel chasing swine and blow this thing up until we see sky through the roof of the RBC. Hang on like a bulldog until prince tassel-loafers MAKES Hess issue an apology.

I’ll put the first $ in the legal fund.

    SCREW the ACC.

  25. backnine 02/20/2012 at 9:31 PM #

So the ACC will cling to Hess’s claim that Corch and Googs were “out of control” using excessive demonstration. A simple replay should be able to provide visual evidence to this……or not.

As the picture SFN added above illustrates, Duke students with their “grabby hands” only inches away from an opposing player – which happens at virtually every Duke game – would seem much closer to Hess’s explanation. Yet that behavior is allowed, even encouraged and lauded as such a great “home court” environment.

This is garbage. Hess screwed up and the ACC, for some reason, is taking up for him rather than call it what it is. I’m even madder now that I was before. Lets keep after it until they get it right. Corch and Googs deserve an apology and vindication or else this is NOT done.
