A Call to Arms

If you didn’t believe it early last week, then surely you did late Thursday night. And if you didn’t believe it then…well, certainly your eyes were opened by Karl Hess on Saturday afternoon, or by the league office later that night. Now, there can be no going back.

NC State is no longer a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Neither is Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Maryland, etc. NC State just happened to be put on notice first. Lucky us. It’s a four member league now, and has been for some time – Duke, North Carolina, ESPN, and John Swofford’s ego. No more room at the inn. It doesn’t matter that this is the house that Everett Case built. If you’re not wearing blue, you are no longer welcome.

Each NC State student, alumnus, and fan has a responsibility. Under no circumstances can you let this go, let this blatant disrespect stand. If you do, you’ve announced to the Swofford cabal that you will absolutely swallow absolutely anything…then smack your lips and ask for another helping. This goes far beyond sports – the cabal has pissed all over your alma mater, your diploma, and the diploma of your fathers, mothers, siblings, and the future diplomas of your children. If you’re headed to the RBC Tuesday night…be creative. And angry. Really, really angry. Make sure the chancellor hears you. That the athletic director hears you. That the Board of Trustees hears you.

Don’t expect to hear happy words. Expect, nay, demand action. Watch for signs that things are building to a crescendo behind the scenes. And don’t throw in the towel, no matter what. To live on your knees is not living at all. Fight for the legacy of Everett Case and James T. Valvano. Fight for your honor and dignity. Fight for the student athletes past, present, and future who have given and will give blood, sweat, and tears to wear the red and white (and sometimes black). If you don’t fight for them…why would you expect them to fight for you?

    “Big East, Big 12”

The Big East is falling apart. They lost WVa. to the Big 12.

The Big 12 also lost teams to the SEC, but isn’t the mess the Big East is.

If the B1G wanted to go to a 16 team super conference that’d be the best fit. We can compete with most of the conference in football, in my opinion and probably close the gap to the top teams, while there should be no drop off in basketball.

The SEC would result in a interregnum, where we get our asses handed to us in football, while we wonder, if we can get to the level to compete. Seeing the last 20 years of aimlessness in football and basketball, I don’t rest assured we’d catch-up in football to make a move to the SEC “fun” (by “fun”, I mean winning more games than we lose).

The South Carolina did it and so can we argument, overlooks the coaches that have resurrected South Carolina’s football program: Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, who both have won national titles as coaches and have won every they’ve been in the college game.

Maybe we could get a Spurrier level coach, if we join the SEC, because that’s what’s needed to compete in that conference.

Anyway, back to basketball, I don’t know what we have to do to get the refs to give us some love. Winning more would help a lot. Being one “those teams that don’t foul much” usually applies to teams that win a lot more than they lose.

If we’re competitive with Duke and UNC, which we really haven’t been for a long time now, like FSU is this year and we still aren’t getting the calls, I’d start to go full on for wanting out of the ACC.

If we do opt out of the ACC, there are not many attractive options to go to other than the B1G. The SEC is tempting, but it will land us in a boat load of football suck for the near future that may never end.

In the short-term, moving to the SEC would probably suck for football. We’d be competitive in basketball and baseball. Moving to the SEC would, however, give NC talent a local option for SEC football and could be a recruiting bonanza. That might extend to Virginia talent as well.

“Say what you will smile102, but it was not irrelevant.”
    Agree. But,…
I am trying to position this from the point of view of a trustee, or pretty much anyone who isn’t absorbed by it all from the perspective of a passionate fan. They are the ones who will make the decisions bantered about here. And I suggest they will not see it as the center of the universe for the University.

“In the short-term, moving to the SEC would probably suck for football. ”

I don’t think the recruiting advantages the SEC would bring would off-set the losses we’d end up with and I don’t have the confidence that NCSU can pull itself up and get the coaches that are needed to compete in the SEC in football.

I’m still waiting to hear Karl’s explanation on what Corch and Googs did that led to this. I think everyone is entitled to at least that much. And I’m unclear at this time as to why it has not been provided and why NC State, as well as the media, are not DEMANDING the ACC produce this. That’s like a police officer pulling you over, writing a ticket, and then not telling you what its for (I just felt like it!). I want to know what Hess heard that drove him over the edge. If Corch and Googs are guilty then lets here the dirt. Otherwise, Hess needs to be held accountable for embarrassing them AND our entire university. This story has gone all over the country at this point.

  6. Wolfacct 02/19/2012 at 8:36 PM #

Anyone think Bill Cowher might welcome the challenge to coach against Saban and Miles? Hmmm?

  7. Wulfpack 02/19/2012 at 8:47 PM #

Kentucky, Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss State, Tennessee — These are SEC teams we can most certainly hang with right now. Throw in TAMU. The way I see it, we are a middle of the road ACC team (perhaps slightly better now with TOB). We would be a middle of the road SEC team with a little work. It does not scare me in the least, and just imagine Saturday gamedays at CF. Go to that conference, and we immediately receive the benefit of recruiting advantages over anything that any ACC school has to offer. Recruits are begging to play in the SEC. That’s where it’s at. There is no SEC football shool in NC. That’s why they leave for the likes if USC, TN, UGA, and UF. Seems to me a perfect opportunity. Oh, and Gott did quite well for himself and the Tide in the SEC. I don’t think he’d have ANY trouble doing the same at NCSU. In fact, I argue the ceiling is higher. What a grand opportunity this would be.

“Thr Dook game was stolen from us due to the way the fouls were called and who they were called on. That led to the debacle against FSU…”

Wow. Are we really this paranoid of a fan base? A Dook or Holes fan would laugh hysterically at that.

  10. joe 02/19/2012 at 9:03 PM #

Can we picket outside Swofford’s house?

  11. redcanine 02/19/2012 at 9:04 PM #

Let me tell you why I’m pissed.

    1) the UNC investigation is still ongoing, no justice yet, Swofford silent
    2) Hess’ unfathomable actions yesterday, no substantial response, Swofford
    silent
    3) NCAA football playoff (like it really matters to those in the ACC,
really) and Swofford won’t shut up about it!

Tits on a boar I tell ya

  12. tractor57 02/19/2012 at 9:09 PM #

I have a had time calling Hess’s action the tip of a conspiracy against the Pack but I’m not quite ready to rule that out. At the least his actions were moronic (even if Corch and Gugs deserved to be tossed (why not during a TV timeout rather than in front of the TV audience). I did not expect ANY statement from the ACC before Monday and all I expect then is some mumble, mumble like we have already heard). At this point I ‘m waiting for the back channel conversations to bear fruit and will be damned surprised of Hess works any more games in Raleigh this season.

All that said I do think there is an issue in Greensboro – the least of which us the Swoff as commish. I don’t see changing conference membership as anything useful. Rather I would prefer to reclaim the ACC.

  13. Primewolf 02/19/2012 at 9:17 PM #

BJD, the school will not look good if things get further out of hand. It was embarassing to see corch ang googs get thrown out. Could anyone in their right mind think the refs cost us that game. I saw the best defensive team I have seen all year. I saw our players didn’t put much into the game and whine over every call.

We come across as a whiny bunch looking for an excuse as to why we lost. FSU just beat the crap out of us. They didn’t need any officials. What game were you watching.

You were surprised by the ACC’s response. I think they would have had the same response to any other official doing it to any school.

Was the dook game riggged. Do you think that happens. Is it a conspiracy. How do they keep it so quite for so long. We got screwed on some calls. But, if they had called 5 more fouls on Duke early in the second half, would it have made a difference. they shut us down totally the last 15 min, just like FSU did hte whole game.

We are not that good yet. We have some quitters and whiners on teh team. Bad attitude, the world is against them. and, accordin to you the wolfpack.

Focusing all your energy on the refs is another way of quitting. A coach shouldn’t let his players do it. Howell needs to sit.

After we lose a few more games, I hope the coach develops some more players down the stretch. Players quitting during the game or acting like the world is against them is not what the game is about.

We won’t get in the SEC. What is your game plan beyond that? Big East.

Whats the plan if we perceive we are getting screwed in the next conference. Conf USA.

We need alumni to step up their giving to the school. we are woefully short in that department. I suspect if we had a competitive budget, we would become much more competitive in all sports, insteaed of a cellar dweller pretty much across teh board.

“but we INCREASED the lead over the next 9 minutes in spite of it.”

Its ignorant statements like this that I hate to see. Very short sighted. If you couldn’t see what that stretch of trigger happy whistle blowing did to cripple our chances of holding on to that league then I’ma need you to just stop watching basketball. Give up, seriously.

If loading 3 of our 5 starters with 4 fouls with 15 mins left in the game and forcing them to sit for over 5 mins didn’t effect the game then what do you think it did. Do you seriously sit there and say to yourself had CJL, CJW and Howell only had 3 fouls and could play those minutes that Dook would have been able to climb back in the game? Or did you not notice that Duke made its heroic come back with AJ, Painter, and DeThaey all on the court?

Not to take anything away from those players but there is a reason why the other three are starting. CJL was dominating inside. CJW never was able to even break a sweat in the game, they took him out early – one of our best decision makers basically had to sit out that game.

Just because we expanded the lead doesn’t mean that joke of officiating didn’t affect the game. Whenever dook fans are cheering ‘let them play’ when clearly letting them play is getting their own team killed…… well it should be obvious.

As for officiating its clear, we are going to have to be better than Duke/UNC and the officials. We need a deep bench so when we are smashing them and the ghost fouls start coming we have the bench to withstand that kind of officiating. I’m sorry its not a coincidence that they all of a sudden decided to call the game completely different in the first 5 mins of the 2nd half than they did the entire game. They knew we were in foul trouble and they went for the kill. I can see calling the entire second half differently but no they waited until 3 of state’s starting 5 was on the bench before they went back to how they were initially calling it then the Duke mugging began.

I hope we get dook again in the ACCT, if the officiating isn’t rigged, we wear them out.

  15. nouveau wolf 02/19/2012 at 9:44 PM #

I never said that the officiating didn’t affect the outcome of the game. I absolutely agree.

I am saying that a couple more made free throws, 1 or 2 less turnovers (Zo stepping out of bounds???) and make a damn basket and we win anyway.

You are right, sir, poor officiating affected the outcome of the game.

    But it didn’t have to.

I can only image how this would play out had Hess thrown out a former UNC-CH or Duke player in their own arena:

    – Swofford would get down on his knees and beg forgiveness immediately. He would show up to talk to their AD in person and promise heads would roll. The ACC would declare a moment of silence be taken in honor of those unjustly thrown out.

    – ESPN, instead of laughing about it, would be up in arms calling the ACC out and suggesting Hess get a suspension or something (on SportsCenter last night they did a brief feature and presented it like it was a joke and essentially laughed at it in case any of you didn’t see it).

    – And pigs would be flying, Hell would be freezing over, etc. because never in a million years would that happen to UNC-CH or Duke anyway

  18. NCStatePride 02/19/2012 at 10:12 PM #

I’m just now reading this article and WOW!!!

This hits at the heart of what I was saying the other night regarding leaving the ACC. Arguing about where we fit in other conferences is a valid discussion, but first we must resign ourselves to acknowledging that leaving the ACC is an option. Many otherwise sensible posters are quick to connect the issue of “would we succeed in the (insert conference” with the discussion of “should we leave the ACC”.

My two cents, let’s first acknowledge that we are committed to finding a new home and agree on that (or at least get on board with the concept). Then we can get into the “where should we go” discussion. After the last week and a half (or so), I think we are getting closer to a consensus on one of those two discussions.

If you’re an ACC team and you want to make the NCAAT, you ought to be able to score more than 12 points in 11 minutes.

  20. Howler 02/19/2012 at 10:48 PM #

My wife, who is a Carolina grad, after seeing the Googs/Corch video said “It’s like UNC and Duke are treated like they occupy a higher class, and State has to operate under different rules, kinda like the Jim Crow laws.”. I said, “Now you understand, Honey.”

  21. Wufpacker 02/19/2012 at 10:56 PM #

“ACC officials will announce before tipoff that fan misbehavior will not be tolerated, whereupon someone throws a Coke Zero bottle at Roy.”

    -A full bottle, I hope.
    ———————————
“Wow. Are we really this paranoid of a fan base? A Dook or Holes fan would laugh hysterically at that.”

-Since I wouldn’t piss on most Carolina fans if they were on fire, I don’t imagine I’d worry too much about what they find hysterical, either.

As opposed to the boatload of football suck we’re in now?

I have never been a member of the “Leave for the SEC” camp, until now. F Swoffard and the ACC directly in the ear. I don;t care if this is the house Case built. F’em. I swear to God we have a better chance of going .500 against Florida, Bama, Auburn and LSU in football than UNC and Duke in basketball with *THIS* kind of total incompetent bullchit going on.

    We *HAVE* to do something….

State, Wake, Clemson, GTech, SoCar, Virginia, ECU, Charlotte form the ECC….just a thought…

Excellent! I like this deal. Corch and Googs sitting behind the outpost of corruption; all goes as planned. In my dreams, I envision DY contacting and coordinating with the non-blue ADs and coming forward, very publicly, with a charge and evidences of systemic CORRUPTION; the media then rolls with it. Too good to be true, right?
