Pack and Cavs game thread

If we want to have a chance of making the tournament we need this game. It will be a game of wills. Whichever team can impose their will on the other will win this game. We need a high scoring game.

I see we have some post game geniuses are out tonight.

It’s a process people, not a light switch.

Yes, there are better excuses to why we are losing all the big games, and ref bias is not near the top of those but it’s part of the list.

This one hurt worse than Thursday. I hate Carolina. I f*ckin’ hate Carolina. If Carolina were playing against a team of Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Mussolini, Satan, and Simon Cowell, I’d still root against Carolina. But it was clear they had the upper hand, and we laid a turd on that pretty-boy-blue court from the start, so it was over before it even hurt.

Tonight hurt like hell. We had to win this game to dance. Tonight I saw Richard Howell leave every last gut on the floor. I saw CJL battle his ass off. I saw CJW lay it out there. But we needed a little more and we didn’t get it. Feels like we belong somewhere in the middle of the league, below the wheat and above the chaff (Wake, GT, BC, VT). We need to beat down the bad teams the rest of the way and feel good that we’re not fighting to stay out of the basement. After all, we were one of the bad teams the last five years.

Next year will be better. Soon we will start kicking some serious ass. I believe in Gottfried.

I will have to agree on the bad officiating. We didn’t shoot well overall, but the officiating did cost us the the W.

Once again not able to watch the game. Looking at the play by play recap if we had hit 2 FT with 1:31 left we would have most likely won the game.

HOWEVER can anyone tell me how a team can go from the 8:13 mark of a BB game and score there final 9 points all at the FT line. WTF is that about? Jesus could they at least wait until we get back to the level of play in the 1970’s and 1980’s before they start F’ing us again or are they that afraid of awaking the sleeping giant that is NC State BB and trying to keep it down from the start.

I recall Sloan and Valvano being very vocal and critical about the refs. Good for Gott. That was one thing I hated about Les and Herb. They would actually thank the ref for a F’ing. As much as I like Sid as a player, he never even knew when were were F’ed.

Now make them shoot FTs all night Coach!

We lost the game at the free throw line tonight, plain and simple. Aside from that, we played well enough against a very good defense to win, despite a miserable shooting night. Va did a good job defending in the 1st half, but the halftime adjustments on offense got us much better looks in the second half – we just couldn’t hit anything for a stretch, and I’m not just talkin’ about AJ. Nice effort against a top 25 team. As V always used to say, “…put yourself in position to have a chance to win…” Had a good chance, just didn’t make it happen.

Lots of contact on the final play, disagree that it was offensive. Roger’s last offensive foul call on Calvin takes the cake for the worst call I’ve seen this year. Absolutely inexcusable.

Refs didn’t lose this game for us, but they didn’t help. What do we have to do to get an even playing field in our own fucking gym?

I agree that shooting was not what it should be, but the officiating was atrocious. I can live with it, but when it happens at the end when the game is on the line, we can chalk this one up to the refs. A foul was called on Leslie in the last few minutes, and I still never saw it, even on the replays at the RBC, and where was the foul call at the end when Brown had the ball? Clearly one sided. We got a mountain to climb and unfortunately the refs aren’t gonna make it an easy one to climb.

I hate being a State fan.

I’d really love to hear Gott go off regarding the officiating much the way Barnes did, as well as K when he first arrived (don’t hear much from HIM these days, of course). I’m not usually one to blame officiating, mainly because it’s not something we can directly control (as opposed to shooting the ball and moving on offense….I’m looking at you Scott Wood). But tonight, in a pretty important HOME game, we got jobbed.

The four point swing where Howell had the board and the putback taken off the board and UVa had two free throws going the other way was perhaps the worst, but there were plenty. We definitely shot ourselves in the foot multiple times, but the officials shot us in the other foot at least as often.

  10. Rochester 01/28/2012 at 11:41 PM #

Wufpacker, how about CJL’s rebound and stickback that should have been an and-1 that instead went the other way? 5-point swing. BS.

We’re like Jackie Robinson in 1947. Not going to get any calls. Got to be better than the other team to make up the difference.

Thankfully, we have BC and Wake next, so we SHOULD get back on track.

  12. turfpack 01/28/2012 at 11:50 PM #

OK….I took one hour to claim down…..BUT…..F*** the Refs….F*** the ACC….F*** SWOFFORD….If this is the kind of F******* we are going to get… please wait for the train car of KY to get here first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND……F*** Carolina! just had to say it! Now I feel better.

    @turfpack,
I think you need an additional hour.

GREAT ARTICLE that reminds us of what we were, what happened to us, and that we got F’ed by ACC refs even in the NCAA Tournament.

“The Wolfpack’s run would be stopped, however, on a questionable traveling call on Corchiani that negated a potential game-tying bucket with under two minutes to do. With Alonzo Mourning doing damage inside (12 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 blocks), Georgetown would go on to beat NC State, 69-61.”

I still remember that BS call in 1989 called by a ACC ref. Shit never changes. It always stinks just like ACC refs.

The first foul call on Leslie was bs, the second one was very much a foul he had an arm bar in the guy’s back and pushed off. How do ya’ll think he got so open on the rebound, even the replay showed it. Reffing had nothing at all to do with this game Howell was stupid to pick up his fifth on what was a foul. He played his heart out and was the only player who cared tonight. I am a referee and they did not screw us over tonight, we screwed ourselves over. We really need to stop blaming the refs.

Wufpacker….I need a decade and a warehouse of liquior after that F******!!!!

    Refs cost us the game?
How about a MISSED layup and a missed follow.
Missed freethrows (and I do mean plural).
    Sucky outside shooting.

Agreed there were a couple calls I felt were called wrong but if the team had finished it would not have mattered.

No question about heart or effort from anyone. This game was a war and in the end we did not have quite enough to breach the fort.

Howell was a beast, Calvin “played like Calvin”, the rest of the guys played well in spots and of course not in others.

This loss did sting but this is what ACC basketball is – two pretty evenly matched teams playing some good basketball.

As mentioned earlier this is a process …

  20. Wufpacker 01/29/2012 at 12:28 AM #

Just because we did ourselves in multiple times doesn’t mean that poor officiating becomes a non-factor. There are MANY things we could have done better that could have changed the outcome of the game, but blown calls still hurt.

Calling out poor officiating is not the same as laying total blame on the officiating.

  21. wufpup76 01/29/2012 at 12:35 AM #

I think most would agree that State lost the game and not the refs.

It hurts to lose by one and there are many things you can point to. Tonight, some calls were things that people can point to. It’s natural to do so. The second half was officiated differently than the first and there were some missed calls.

That said, everybody knows State had their chances. Howell and Leslie were dominant though. Huge calls went against them. People are going to reference that and there’s not anything wrong with that. People are also going to reference the poor FT shooting, poor 3-pt. FG shooting, allowing the opponent to shoot 60% in the first half, Wood and Johnson’s subpar games, lack of execution on the last play … on and on.

    Nothing wrong with that, either.

Forgot to mention, though we lost the game, for many reasons, the crowd, and attendance at the game was great. Fans hang in there, because we are getting there.

  23. tuckerdorm1983 01/29/2012 at 8:15 AM #

we are getting there. We should win the next three. Lose the next three and win the next three. Making us 10-6. I seriously doubt we go dancing, but we could. Probably 5th in the ACC. Any deviation from this down give us no chance (minus miracle at the ACC tournament). Any deviation from this up means we probably go to the NCAA tournament. There is no room for error

  24. eas 01/29/2012 at 8:18 AM #

Gott needs to make adjustments with AJ and Woods playing time. As much as I like Wood he plays way too much considering he doesn’t contribute much on either side of the ball. When he is on everything is fine. When he is off he really hurts us. His defense is rough (although he plays hard, just too slow). AJ……well I think we all know he needs minimal time and his outside shooting is absolutely terrible!

  25. Rick 01/29/2012 at 8:42 AM #

We do not have enough talented guys on the team. Having to play Johnson when he is plainly not an ACC caliber player is a nightmare. We have under sized big men. No shooters except one who lolly gags around the court.
It sucks but it is even more obvious Lowe had no idea what he was doing.

My problem with the refs was the inconsistency. They called fouls in the second half that were not called in the first half. They called every touch foul against us but they were able to shove Zo on the final play. That inconsistency is what makes them suck.
