Pack and Cavs game thread

If we want to have a chance of making the tournament we need this game. It will be a game of wills. Whichever team can impose their will on the other will win this game. We need a high scoring game.

^ “Gottfried calling out the refs over the PA on the postgame radio interview.”

    What did he say?

  2. wufpup76 01/28/2012 at 10:49 PM #

I feel badly for AJ. He’s a great kid and is trying to help the team. I think he still has a role – just awful tonight outside of the alley-oop to Leslie.

Gottfried just called out the refs again – this time about the last play.

    Love this guy.

  3. redcanine 01/28/2012 at 10:50 PM #

If AJ can’t make a wide open layup, how can he contribute positively to this team? Boy, oh boy, did that suck some serious ass. My Bojangles almost came back up.

Gott should be teaching someone to set a **** screen for Wood. He SETS 10 screens for every one someone sets for him. WTF?

And the last play was inexcusable.

I am extremely concerned about the offense we are trying to run – it simply does not generate good looks at the basket for the guys we want shooting it. That’s sorta the point. All worked fine against crappy competition – now we see reality set in.

We’re in for a lot more games like this one this year… and I don’t believe that a massive talent deficit can be blamed. No one – no one – can tell me UVa had more talent on the floor tonight than we did. Nor did Tech. We’re getting outcoached and outworked – and I find that deeply problematic.

“Missed free throws, but we really need someone who can hold on to the ball, mainly a point guard (Lewis?) next season who can hold on to the ball and distribute it (especially to Wood) without all the fancy stuff that causes turnovers, with Lo the #2 guard.”

Agreed. A true point guard will do wonders for this crew.

Potential bright side. If we hold serve against the next three teams, we’re probably 8-8 in ACC play at worst (with an upside of 10-6). Considering the last five seasons, that’s tremendous improvement no matter what.

From tied for 1st to 4th in 3 days.

I believe that last play was all Zo’s fault, Gott probably had a proper play set up.
I also believe Gott is starting to see the ref bias against State and will eventually get that strait between more serious confrontations with the refs and teaching our players and future players to deal with them also. I hope so or State will never have enough edge in conference play to win championships.

    “What did he say?”

Paraphrase: “Virginia got to the line a ton in the second half. They got there a lot … (pause) … They really got there a lot more than really I felt they should have in that half but …”

Later when talking about the last play: “The idea was to get Zo to the basket or set up a jumper for Wood. But Zo didn’t make it in there and I tell ya I really feel like he got bumped there (crowd applause).”

^I’ll take those quotes over how “great our opponent is in daytight compartments” any day. Or about how we “didn’t run our stuff. Our guys need to run our stuff.”

CJ Leslie and Richard Howell had bad FT shooting nights tonight.

There were a whole hell of a lot of areas, where we lost this game.

Wood having an off night shooting.
    Bad FT shooting.
Bad officiating taking away buckets on phantom calls.
Missing point blank lay ups, when your unguarded.

For putting freshman in for Johnson. Raymond’s a two guard. Harris is a forward. Johnson’s the back up PG, until Lewis gets here next year.

Without Johnson we’d be in worse shape depth wise, because there’d be no body to handle the ball, when Brown gets a breather.

    ^ Cool, thanks!

  12. lush 01/28/2012 at 10:56 PM #

Just got home. That was brutal.

Refs were atrocious as always, but if Alex Johnson doesn’t miss two layups, or Leslie and Howell make one more free throw….

We can’t take ANY teams for granted now with 3 losses, and games against UNC, Duke and FSU left. Any loss to anyone else and we’re toast barring a deep ACC Tourney run, or if we somehow manage to pull an upset. @ GT will not be easy. @ Clemson will not be easy. And @ VT will not be easy.

  14. ILpackfan 01/28/2012 at 10:58 PM #

Or if Zeglinski doesn’t make that 3-pointer from downtown Cary….

  15. bill.onthebeach 01/28/2012 at 10:58 PM #

^RE: Shooting: at this level SHOOTING is 99% MENTAL…
we are definitely in a funk about that…

FOR the RPI freaks who hang here…IS this a QUALITY loss, if such a time truly exists ??

  16. wolfonthehill 01/28/2012 at 10:58 PM #

^ Yep – took a lot of extremely bad luck, calls, and execution ALL working together… to get us to lose by a single point…

  17. wolfonthehill 01/28/2012 at 10:58 PM #

And I think Zeglinski just hit another three…

  18. Khan 01/28/2012 at 10:59 PM #

    Wolfonthehill,

I somewhat disagree on the talent thing. We miss a ton of open shots. Whether we’re getting open due to running a great offensive set, or whether it’s a break-down, or whether it’s after an offensive rebound and it’s just a quick kick-out, we miss a ton of open shots. And we miss a ton of shots around the basket. We get out-jumped a lot. Better talent will help with all of that. We have to be able to hit the open shots, make the free throws, and finish around the basket, because for whatever the reason, we’re getting plenty of looks.

I guess I’m not ready to throw the towel in on the offense style yet.

  19. bill.onthebeach 01/28/2012 at 10:59 PM #

^Khan… just keep hanging around with the boys….

  20. stillapackfan 01/28/2012 at 11:01 PM #

    “Ref bias against State”?

We really need to come up with better excuses for losing.

  21. wufpup76 01/28/2012 at 11:01 PM #

Radio guys talking about Howell fouling out 3 straight games.

I’m telling you – change his number to ’50’, make him a white guy, make him wear a light shade of blue. Then get the media to foam about his “indomitable force of will” all while being the most physical player in the league while averaging one foul call per game.

  22. redcanine 01/28/2012 at 11:02 PM #

Another basketball just hit my house. It must have been shot by one of our guys.

  23. swamppack 01/28/2012 at 11:02 PM #

I love the prospects of having some good recruits next year and I hope they are good enough to make that immediate impact but you better not hang your hat on it.
Gott’s coaching better be up to par more than anything to get us over the hump. He is the one who has to lead a culture changing movement in State basketball.

  24. ILpackfan 01/28/2012 at 11:03 PM #

“We really need to come up with better excuses for losing.”

2-15 from beyond the arc, 40% overall from the field, and 57% from the charity stripe. Bad shooting will do it every time.

  25. BureauOfMines 01/28/2012 at 11:06 PM #

Missed free throws were costly and that’s easier to fix than some of the other problems.

Foul trouble was the story of this game. I hope Gott has a plan.
