Pack and Cavs game thread

If we want to have a chance of making the tournament we need this game. It will be a game of wills. Whichever team can impose their will on the other will win this game. We need a high scoring game.

I liked the fact that we were able to get a shot at the win, considering that at one point it looked like UVA was going to run away with the game during the second half, but that last play was very disapointing.

    ^RE: rebuilding….

edit, if you don’t mind… more like “starting over from scratch”.

Compared to the past…it’s still 110% POSITIVE.

    It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

This is pretty much our ceiling for this year. We may win one game we shouldn’t win, but not more than that, and we’ll lose a couple that we shouldn’t lose. There is simply a lack of talent to be a top tier team.

We’re better than last year, though. So that’s something.

My guess is there was to be a screen for Brown and he was going to slash down the lane and dish to an open shooter or take the shot himself.

I think that’s a classic way to run a 10 second offense, with a great point guard.

Anyway, I’m really pissed about the TWO PHANTOM foul calls on CJ Leslie on the offensive class. He FOUR POINTS taken away by those calls. Not four maybe he’d have made the shot four points, but two damn buckets that went through the friggin’ hoop.

By the way, I agree 100% Howler. Some of those over the back and offensive fouls against us were terrible.

I didn’t think there was a foul on the last play. Just a terrible set / execution.

I’m positive Zo was told to attack the rim and create / shoot. Bad screen and didn’t get around the hedge. Everybody then just stood around.

Should’ve won this game. Missed opportunities all over the place. Plus, Virginia scored each point from the FT line in the last 8 minutes. 17 fouls on us in the second half – is that correct?

    Disgusting game.

Nothing wrong with the set, everybody was watching.

But that’s part of the lack of overall moxie with this club.

  8. Howler 01/28/2012 at 10:41 PM #

Definitely need church in the morning; absolution for some of the things I said tonight.

The four points Leslie was robbed by two phantom calls came back to bite us. Those put backs were good and then the ref blows the whistle.

I really want to throttle the ass-hat in charge of ACC officials.

UVa has hacking the crap out of our guys, when they were trying to get low post position, but no fouls called on them.

Looking at the stats line at everything but shooting % (especially 3pt shooting %), I cannot believe this game was even close, let alone that we lost. We are better than we have been in the recent past due to hard work and hustle, but offensively we have a long way to go before we’re a good team. Hopefully adding depth with this recruiting class will answer some of that offensive shortfall.

I love what Howell did tonight but remember he also missed the first 5 FT’s of the game.

    FTs!

    The Pack is back!

^RE: neckup… 95% of the games we will play are won or loss from the “NECK UP”. There are better guys than ours on the playgrounds in Rawlee, who cannot BRING IT in front of a crowd, much less at the RBC Center, Cameron or the DeanDome…that’s the essential difference between where we are and where we ALL want to be….

Our team’s basketball iq is very low.

  16. Khan 01/28/2012 at 10:43 PM #

And I’ll add, I hope we can continue to learn, especially how to handle close, end of game situations. I feel pretty good that Gott will teach the right things. I hope our IQ goes up, particularly around fouling and close game scenarios.

^^The four points Leslie was robbed by two phantom calls came back to bite us.

The three missed shots by AJ on one possession didn’t really help much.

I would so much rather see Harris on the floor than AJ right now. Fine when Lo needs a blow, but why play them together? Go a little big and get someone who doesn’t suck in there. Play Staats Battle for God’s sake. There have to be walk-ons in this conference that are better than AJ.

  18. eas 01/28/2012 at 10:43 PM #

Gott can’t make a miracle with the hand he was dealt this season so I will be positive. But that last play was terrible. Obvious it was drawn up for Wood.

    Other notes:
    1. AJ is terrible (use the younger option)
    2. Wood is terrible on defense
    3. Wood does not work for his shot and is liability on his off nights
    4. Howell…..thank you for finally showing up. Good job
    5. Zo…..Jeckyl & Hyde. Never know who shows up
    6. CJ is the worst FT shooter ever

We have a long way to go but at least we play hard for a change. Get AJ off the court Gott!

  19. BladenWolf 01/28/2012 at 10:44 PM #

Virginia is a good team. I agree with Howler, in that we closed a big deficit and had a chance to win on the last possession and that beats just getting drubbed like the last game.

  20. wufpup76 01/28/2012 at 10:45 PM #

Gottfried calling out the refs over the PA on the postgame radio interview.

    Awesome.

  21. Gene 01/28/2012 at 10:46 PM #

I think the last play was a screen for the PG, who’s supposed to drive to the basket and either take the shot, get fouled our pass to the open shooter.

Brown didn’t attack the basket/ accelerate fast enough to by the UVa defender, who showed, then got triple teamed and had no where to go. Someone should’ve run to the basket. Three guys on Brown, one guy on Wood, that means two people were unguarded.

  22. Howler 01/28/2012 at 10:47 PM #

Rochester, Harris would not be a step up from AJ based on his play earlier in the year. AJ has holes in his game; he was just especially bad tonight.

  23. 61Packer 01/28/2012 at 10:47 PM #

Missed free throws, but we really need someone who can hold on to the ball, mainly a point guard (Lewis?) next season who can hold on to the ball and distribute it (especially to Wood) without all the fancy stuff that causes turnovers, with Lo the #2 guard.

Much better game by CJL. He missed way too many FTs but he had lots of company.

  24. Wulfpack 01/28/2012 at 10:47 PM #

All in all at least it was somewhat encouraging. We battled back with a chance to win against a top-25 team. Howell was phenonemenal, he, of coruse, just needs to stay on the floor. I think UVA is just a little smarter, and they rode the hot first half shooting and the refs in the second half. They won the tempo battle, as they often do. Tony Bennett has a couple years of a head start on us. Next year will be different. Hopefully we can keep pace for middle of the road in the ACC and pull of an upset or two to at least be in the tourney conversation, but that is not looking so. Still greatly improved over year’s past and that’s all we can ask in year 1 of Gott and company.

  25. bill.onthebeach 01/28/2012 at 10:48 PM #

Khan said “I feel pretty good that Gott will teach the right things. I hope our IQ goes up”

and that’s 110% dead on the money…the only thing that changes with time is WHO Coach Gott is teaching….. and that looks GOOD from here…
