I saw a team frustrated tonight…you learn more about yourself from a night like this than when u get the breaks. Our guys have to be tougher. And next time we play these guys we need to take it right at henson and zeller

  2. moose8865 01/26/2012 at 10:26 PM #

hopefully henson and his bunch will not pull a Hans bro and stay 4 years

And Lord I hope you are right moose. Like that mouthy Vitale said during the broadcast tonight, “there’s no rivalry. You have to show up and win some games and play hard in the ones you don’t win when it comes to rivalry games. There’s no rivalry here”. Like him or not, he told it just like it was.

^^^^If you stepped into the ring with Muhammad Ali, you’d lose most of the time. There is an incredible disparity in talent. It’s really that simple.

Ouch! I hope that some of the film is shown. Hard to believe that standing around is the offense they practice everyday. Can be a learning time. They looked a little like a deer in the headlights at times and seemed to play tight. I hope they come out in their next game like carolina did after their last loss.

  6. BJD95 01/26/2012 at 10:29 PM #

We only have ONE player that can really drive the lane (Brown). And Henson can erase that. Brown usually has a size advantage over opposing PGs. Not tonight.

Where we’ve created mismatches all year is in transition (Carolina’s too fast) and with our multiple power forwards. Carolina’s guys are big enough to handle them, and MUCH quicker.

They don’t always play great PERIMETER defense, but we only have one shooter. And his release isn’t quick enough (even when he moves without the ball, and he didn’t tonight) to take advantage before they alter shots with their length. Which they did. All damned night.

it seems like carolina and duke never lose anyone early, and we get someone good and he leaves after one year, the college game has become guards and long tall big men, if you dont have them then its hard to compete. and to be honest we really dont have either yet.

  8. Khan 01/26/2012 at 10:33 PM #

I think we can realistically beat anybody in the ACC, except UNC. Outside of a miracle, we don’t beat them.

  9. Wulfpack 01/26/2012 at 10:37 PM #

Taking it right at Henson and Zeller will be a loss every single time. It is a MISMATCH. How you do not see that is beyond me. Sure, you try to get them in foul trouble. But if it does not work out you are down big in no time and it is effectively over. We are a pretty average team. Back to the drawing board.

  10. STLPack01 01/26/2012 at 10:38 PM #

Y’all aren’t going to like what I’m about to say, but I think we lose that game by at least 40 with Sid Lowe as coach. Gott impressed by keeping the players focused and in the game to “cut it” to 19.

Just look at it this way: we didn’t get beat by them as bad as they got beat by FSU.

  11. Whiteshoes67 01/26/2012 at 10:40 PM #

Still disagree with all the mismatch talk. Every team has strengths and weaknesses. UNC is physically more talented. But UNC dominated this game because they exploited our weaknesses and we didn’t exploit theirs. WE turned it over, got dominated on the boards and played undisciplined. Not because we were overmatched, because we were either nervous, undisciplined, or a combination of both. But the team collectively played like wusses tonight. You have pull their bigs away from the basket, attack with the dribble. You’re not going to keep UNC from scoring, but you damn well better be more effecient on offense. Have to attack with the dribble and find the open guy. In the first half, everytime Calvin got fed in the post, they doubled him. What does that mean? It means there’s an open shooter or cutter. Did he find them? No. Poor decisions, bad shot selection, poor fundamentals tonight..We got rattled, first time that i’ve seen this team get rattled for such a long period of time.

  12. Whiteshoes67 01/26/2012 at 10:41 PM #

Not sure we cut it to 19. UNC took the air out. They could’ve won by 40+

  13. swamppack 01/26/2012 at 10:43 PM #

^^Khan, you are right about the talent, but what is there to make us believe the next touted group coming in will be confident, winning, athletic ball players. This last group hasn’t materialized. There’s always an excuse at State and there always has been since V was let go. The best group we’ve had was the Jules era and you could see their ceiling a mile away. My point is this: I just never thought I would see a time in State b-ball where there was nothing to grab onto for hope. Do I hope MG is the answer? Of course! Should I believe at this point he is? Why?

  14. STLPack01 01/26/2012 at 10:46 PM #

@Whiteshoes: disagree. They didn’t take the air out until about 2 minutes left.

Listen, I ain’t happy about losing to those arseholes by 19. But I could have easily seen it gone 40+, and they certainly wanted to do it.

  15. Whiteshoes67 01/26/2012 at 10:46 PM #

chop is right on…got to take the ball right at the bigs..

  16. MattN 01/26/2012 at 10:49 PM #

How in the F#@K was Les F#$King Robinson able to get his HORRIBLE teams to beat these SOBs 5 go+d#$n times?!?!?

  17. Khan 01/26/2012 at 10:50 PM #

Swamp, the nationally, highly ranked recruiting class makes me think we’ll be able to be more competitive. It’s going to come down to coaching and getting the team to play as an elite team. Gott has done a good job in getting the current talent to play more to their level than they did last year. So, I view that as positive progress.

i was surpised at some of the defensive matchups i saw tonight…may be wrong but it looked like Wood was playing Barnes a good bit in the first half. Thought Williams would’ve/should’ve played Barnes most of the game, even giving up more size, and Wood should’ve played Marshall. Put Brown on the 2. Would’ve liked to have seen Calvin pull his man away and use the dribble more.

  19. swamppack 01/26/2012 at 10:51 PM #

O.K. MattN, now breath deeply……………….Who am I trying to fool, I feel the same way.

  20. xphoenix87 01/26/2012 at 10:51 PM #

Honestly, I’m not fazed by this loss at all. It would’ve been great to beat UNC, and it sucks to get blown out, but what happened did not surprise me one bit. When Carolina comes to play, they’re the best team in the country (outside of possibly Kentucky), and they came to play tonight. Henson and Zeller are a particularly terrible matchup for our bigs, and they dominated the game (especially Henson, who is far-and-away the best defensive player in college basketball). They’re just too big, deep and talented.

I was disappointed in some of our play, especially when we seemed to give up when the lead got around 20 (though, to their credit, they pulled it together a bit at the end). Overall though, we were just outclassed. The only big disappointment was Brown, who I thought played very poorly, wasn’t aggressive, and made several careless turnovers.

  21. BJD95 01/26/2012 at 10:52 PM #

By chucking tons of threes. When you get hot, you can beat anybody. When you’re not (3 times out of 4), you beat noone.

It’s a great plan to get upsets while finishing with a losing record every damned season.

  22. Whiteshoes67 01/26/2012 at 10:55 PM #

I’m sold on Gott but I’m not sure the high post is the best way to attack UNC with that lineup…we played to their strengths

  23. swamppack 01/26/2012 at 10:58 PM #

Kahn your response is well thought out and you are obviously able to maintain a more hopeful outlook than I am at this particular point. Believe me I WANT to be hopeful and every time I get it back on track, something like tonight happens. You are 100% right, until we get some high-light makers instead of the posterized victims we have had for the past 20 yrs., we will always suck.

  24. Texpack 01/26/2012 at 10:59 PM #

In the first half, everytime Calvin got fed in the post, they doubled him. What does that mean? It means there’s an open shooter or cutter. Did he find them?

He hasn’t found them all year. It’s one of the things he just hasn’t learned how to do. Tracy Smith took a while to learn it too.

From a match up stand point this one didn’t shock me. We could have made the game competitive if we had shot the ball semi decent.

I’ll go over this again for those who haven’t been paying attention to this team. We score off of offensive rebounding, transition baskets, and getting the the FT line. UNC-CH is the best rebounding team in the country which hurts both #1 and #2 and their opponents shoot fewer FTs than any other team in the country which puts a big hole in #3. Zeller and Henson schooled Howell, Painter and Calvin on the glass. You have to work harder against those guys than you do against the two dudes from UM.

Hopefully we will learn from this with respect to how much better we have to get to compete with the upper level of the conference. We really haven’t beaten anybody decent to this point in the season. That’s not to say we aren’t a lot better than we were last year, it just means we have more work to do.

Nobody on here likes to lose to UNX, but I am not throwing the team or the coach under the bus. There is still alot of ball to be played, and then we can give a fair assessment. We gave Sid 5 years, and this is just the first for Gottfried. We still have a legitimate shot at the big dance. Don’t lose hope so soon!
