    I think most of us believe Gott and Co. are pretty good coaches. This is the point where we will get our first indication of just how good they are, I think. I’m not too worried about the rest of the team mentally and emotionally, but I do wonder if this is where they “lose” Calvin.

    What a suck basketball program at State. This kind of stuff like tonight is just par for the course for Wolfpack basketball. They really look like high-schoolers out there. One of our supposedly best recruits in years(C.J. Leslie) and just look at his skill level compared to Carolina guys tonight.

  4. gtspack 01/26/2012 at 9:37 PM #

    I would hate to be UV. Holes still have to come to RBC, and we are reloading BIGtime next year. Lets suckit up and move on. We are a program on the move. GO PACK!!!

    The team we have watched win games finally showed up the last 10 minutes of the game, too bad they didn’t do that for the rest of the game. I am sure we will learn from this, and improve, at least it was a l9 point loss, by an unranked team, as opposed to a top 10 that lost by 33. I say we can get them the second round in our house, if we remember the way we played the last 10 minutes. And since it will be in our house, nerves will not play a part in the game. What a great story that would be after tonite. I believe!

    Carolina was fantastic tonight. I’m not surprised with our overall low shooting percentage because their frontcourt players are such talented defenders. However, I cannot pretend to understand why we airballed and bricked so many open perimeter shots. Nerves, maybe?

  7. MrPlywood 01/26/2012 at 9:41 PM #

    ^Looked completely like nerves to me.

  8. Wufpacker 01/26/2012 at 9:42 PM #

    Love the additional graphic, Pride. That is pretty much dead on what we looked like tonight in the rebounding dept.

    In time M< Gott will bring our program to the next level. We got punched in the mouth and never back up. That is that. Can we go dancing? Depends if we can push UVA and MD and any other teams out of the way and be fourth. We just don't have the big men to match up with the Heels. They showed us that tonight. Hardest game of the regular season. I expect the same outcome when we go to Duke. The future is bright, I have no doubt.

    @tuckerdorm1983,
    I’m not ready to concede third just yet. FSU is soft when they aren’t motivated.

    beat uva and i’m happy for the week!

    @calvin? he’s a good player but very unique, it will take time to polish his game.

    @our best recruit? imo that’s lorenzo brown… he’s #1 to me.

  13. blpack 01/26/2012 at 9:51 PM #

    Ugly game. We have to get mentally tougher and play our game. We can’t win their style. Too many quick shots and selfish play tonight. They played about as well as they can. We won’t see that level in Raleigh on the return game, but if we play like we did tonight it won’t matter. On to Virginny.

  14. EdMar 01/26/2012 at 9:53 PM #

    That was a reality check!

  15. coach13 01/26/2012 at 9:54 PM #

    At best we are near the upper end of the lower half teams….and IMO CJ Leslie is at the upper end of good college players that really just aren’t good enough to play in the NBA. Leslie has a load of talent but just does not have IT. Players like Henson and Barnes have IT and CJ does not. He is not in their class.

  16. mak4dpak 01/26/2012 at 9:55 PM #

    A win over FSU would help us, since the smurfs were shallacked by them. But the first thing to do is put this behind us and take care of UVA on Saturday nite.

  17. Gene 01/26/2012 at 9:56 PM #

    Talent level is improving. I don’t mean overall recruits, but how they are developed at this level.

    We’ve gone from not having any all ACC caliber players for years to probably having a couple make either 2nd or 3rd team this year. I think Brown and Howell have a shot. Leslie and Williams may get honorable mention.

    The next step is to coach these guys up to be NBA caliber players.

    I guess it’s one-step at a time.

  18. Wufpacker 01/26/2012 at 9:59 PM #

    @coach13,
    Agreed re: Leslie. The sad thing is that he could be if his mind was right.

  19. Hungwolf 01/26/2012 at 10:01 PM #

    Terrible performance. this team doesn’t know how to man up against top teams. hate to say it was too predictable and I did. Didn’t think it would be this bad. Leslie played soft and selfish, Howell got his shot blocked and played like a sissy, Johnson seemed blinded by the bright lights, and scott wood disappears against top teams doesn’t work hard for his shot and takes rushed shots in top games if he does shoot. Might as well call his Scott “Cement Shoes” Wood in big games, he don’t move. I mean how many times did we see lowe telling Wood to move without the ball in games last year? This team got some growing up to do, maybe a good slap in the face tonight might finally do it. Then again maybe they just keep folding against real competition.

  20. swamppack 01/26/2012 at 10:07 PM #

    How long will it be before MG gets this team to achieve their first big win? I know this is his 1st year of taking over a team with loser mentality but when will that 1st big win be? Tonight showed no progress toward that at all. I love the Pack but man, get real, bad match-up or not tonight, that showing was despicable and leaves you wondering.

  21. moose8865 01/26/2012 at 10:11 PM #

    swamppack, probably not until he gets some of his own recruits in the programs, kids who are unselfish and has that it about them

  22. mak4dpak 01/26/2012 at 10:12 PM #

    Hopefully that big win will come Saturday nite against UVA.

  23. Khan 01/26/2012 at 10:22 PM #

    This isn’t about Gottfried motivating the team or coaching the team to a win. This is about being out-matched across the board. We do not match up with them at any position. It’s really as simple as that. There is no way, outside of them not being able to throw it in the ocean, we’re going to win this game. We’d have to shoot 70+% and they’d have to just categorically implode. That isn’t going to happen, and we all know this.

    I knew we would lose by >15 points. We do not match up well with them. And we won’t, until we recruit better, which seems to be happening.

    All this doesn’t mean we can’t be good, though. We can. But we won’t be great and compete with teams with athletes like UNC with the current group.

  24. wufpup76 01/26/2012 at 10:23 PM #

    Hope it is a learning lesson.

    I disagree that we quit at all. Flustered, then panicked, then trying to do too much individually? Absolutely.

    Also, I have less of a problem with Calvin than others do. He played hard the entire game … Tried to take over out of frustration and made some terrible decisions – but I thought his heart was in the right place.

    We got an ass whippin and played awful. Learn from it, toughen up and move on. The chemistry on this team is great and I love the direction of the program.

    It was one game against Henson and the ass-hats. We’ll get there.

    Can someone please tell me WHAT THE F#%K we have to do to even be COMPETETIVE?!?!? Tonight was 100% unacceptable, coach. NOT. ACCEPTABLE!
