NC State 76 Wake Forest 40

We don’t get to run many game entries with this score in ACC play!

The last time an ACC team was held to 40 points or less by NC State was before the shot clock era in 1982.

Link to recap

Lorenzo Brown scored 20 points and North Carolina State embarrassed Wake Forest on its home floor once again, routing the Demon Deacons 76-40 on Saturday for its most lopsided ACC road victory in more than half a century.

C.J. Williams added 15 points and Richard Howell had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolfpack (13-5, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). They never trailed in claiming their fourth straight win in the series and second straight by at least 30 points.

N.C. State—which entered allowing an ACC-worst 70 points per game—held Wake Forest to just over half that on 29 percent shooting (16 of 55) and gave up only two field goals during a stretch of roughly 14 minutes.

[snip]

…the only question was whether the Wolfpack would surpass the 112-72 rout at Clemson in December 1954 as the most lopsided ACC road victory in school history.

They threatened that record here for the second time in 11 months, after N.C. State routed the Demon Deacons 80-55 at the once-inhospitable Joel Coliseum last February for its most one-sided road win in ACC play since that 1954 season.

Wake Forest finished the game shooting 29.1 percent (16 of 55) and made just 2 of 20 three-pointers on the afternoon.

I share Backing the Pack’s perspective.

I’ll get to the stats whenever the official box score is released, but the numbers really are beside the point on days like today. Wake Forest looked disinterested and lost throughout Saturday afternoon’s game and probably would have lost to last year’s Wake team with this performance. I’m not sure the 36-point margin adequately describes just how bad they were today.

Personally, the most interesting thing to me of the entire day was how few minutes CJ Calvin Leslie (link to recent conversation) played after not even starting. Something is going on here and it will be interesting to watch any developments.

With Carolina currently losing by 14 points (17:33 remaining in the game) and the NFL Playoffs still ahead this afternoon we invite you to talk about anything you want on our message forums throughout the remainder of the day.

Is it too early to stick a fork in VT’s hopes for NCAA tournament?

Up next UNC, @ UVA, BYU, @ Merryland, and Duke…yikes!

  2. BamaPack 01/14/2012 at 5:29 PM #

    VT looks “done”.

  3. BJD95 01/14/2012 at 5:33 PM #

They really lost to BC and the garbage Wake team we saw today? Yeesh, totally done.

I think Seth G may be done before it is all said and done as well.

  5. BJD95 01/14/2012 at 5:46 PM #

Agreed. Wow, SF taking the Saints to the woodshed. Didn’t see that coming.

Calvin needs to get with the program. That aside, awesome day to be a Pack fan. How bout those Niners??? Home field advantage is proving to be the real deal these NFL playoffs.

Really wish I could understand NFL rules. Helmet to Helmet is confusing.

Guess I was right about Calvin dogging it today. Gott won’t tolerate that kind of crap but I also don’t think Calvin will ever grow up.

This just in – Drew Brees is freakishly good.

“While I love that the Heels got body slammed, it’s not good for the league. It essentially dillutes any potential win we could have over them, especially if they drop a few more. I’ll take a Heels loss and a Pack blowout any day of the week, however, and twice on Sunday.

I disagree. Not sure UNC losing today will matter — they’ll still be a Top 25 win when we play them. And now FSU will have a better resume when we play them.

I listened to the last few minutes of the UNX game on the UNX network and also some of the post game. Word is Roy pulled his bench after discussing with the refs and Hamilton. They would have had to traverse the court to get to their lockers and with the students ready to rush the court …

In this case I’m not sure I can fault ole Roy. He also has some very good things to say about FSU and Hamilton – covering his ass I’m sure.

I sure wished I could have heard Woody Durham explain this one away. If anything they were more out of their game than Wake was out of ours.

During the Tech came Hubert Davis said CJL needed to play like Calvin – from what I saw even more today. I was pleased to see hustle otherwise from the Pack.

Woody no longer calls the games, he retired after last season.

What an odd thing to be thinking about at that time. “Geez its gonna suck getting outta here”. Really? REALLY? Sorry Roy, thats part of getting your ass whooped. The fact anyone agreed with it will NEVER make that right. Poor sport and low class is Roy Williams.

    RED LETTER DAY.

A smack down and then our hated enemy smacked down. Only thing could have been better is if we smacked down those smug sons of b@#$@$s

I thought that Calvin was on track, looks like he has strayed. Hopefully Gott can get him back on track we have to have him to have a decent year. Roy’s pulling of his team is unbelievable. When he walked out of the coach’s box should have been an automatic technical. I am sure he will have some safety excuse, and if so is he not worried about the five he left on the floor? I am SURE Swofford will fine him.

Now let’s keep the pedal down and make it two (and then three) consecutive against BC (and then Miami) leading up to a trip to Chapel Hill. No looking ahead, I hope.

Marvelous defensive effort! From what I saw (turned the ESPN3 rerun off after 5 min. into the second half), good shots were very hard to come by for Wake.

Calvin dogged it on several caroms/loose balls I saw. He won’t get enough NBA love to leave early if he continues playing like that, so I figure he’ll re-adjust and start being a force again. From Nov-Jan he has been worlds better than last year, so we know he’s got it in him if he wants.

LRM I know but this would be one day to have him back …

What was the technical foul on McKie all about? I was at the game, so I didn’t get the benefit of a replay.

We really need Leslie to get it back together. The truth is that he’s busted butt most of the year.

  22. WeAreCured 01/14/2012 at 10:14 PM #

McKie got a flagrant 2 for hitting Wood in the nose with his elbow. It happened fast, so the refs looked at the monitor to see what the appropriate call would be, and they decided it was a flagrant 2 ejection.

I love Roy. He is so brave to walk off the court 14 seconds before the game ended. He is such a class act. He knew he would be ridiculed for doing such a thing, yet due to his courage and dignity he walked off the court early. I love the man and all he stands for. They need more like him at UNC following the carolina way. What a class act and he wrote a best selling book telling everybody just how great he is. He gets the best of the best recruits and they always underachieve. I love Ole Roy.

Re: Calvin – I didn’t get the sense that he was dogging it – just had a bad day. I don’t know what else may be going on, but he has had a fantastic season and I hope / WE NEED him to quickly return to the form that he’s had in all previous games this season.

I thought the defensive effort out of the gate was terrific and really set the tone. Looked like Wake just packed it in after they kept missing 3’s. I actually thought we could’ve played better – so that just goes to show you how absolutely horrendous Wake was today.

    Go Pack
