Maryland visits RBC for huge ACC opener (& game conversation entry)

Fans that like to explore ways to criticize The News & Observer don’t have anything to complain about today as the local newspaper gave the Wolfpack front page praise for improvement after a day of games where we didn’t even take the court and followed that up with more discussion about the season inside the paper.

Lorenzo Brown is starting to look more like a point guard. C.J. Leslie has figured out the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. Richard Howell’s game is blossoming. C.J. Williams is scoring.

As N.C. State heads into ACC play, the Wolfpack keep getting better. From where these players were last season, from where they were in October, the improvement up and down the roster is readily apparent – to fans, coaches and players.

“Everyone’s always been good,” Brown said. “We just needed an extra push to bring it out of us. I agree everyone’s gotten a lot better. And the new offense we’re running, it works for us.”

As a team, there are many markers of State’s in-season improvement: Just as one example, after late-game situations tripped the Wolfpack up against Indiana and Stanford, the Wolfpack won on a last-second shot against St. Bonaventure and held off a relentless challenge from Campbell.

Still, it’s the individual improvement that stands out, whether it’s Brown or Leslie or Williams or Howell or anyone else. They’re better players than they were a year ago. As N.C. State opens ACC play against Maryland today, they’re better players than they were a month ago.

“We’re getting there,” N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. “Each individual part has gotten better, and hopefully we can keep getting better as a team.”

Don’t misunderstand, tonight’s game with Maryland is HUGE for NC State across many fronts…not the least of which is that we get three of our first four conference games in Raleigh. (Great discussion on this topic available here.)

Home: Maryland, GT, BC, UVa, WF, FSU, UNC, Miami
Road: WF, Miami, UNC, BC, GT, Duke, Clemson, VT

I’ve been thinking on and discussing this for a while.
1) Our home schedule is easier than our road schedule, even discounting the fact that they are away.
2) At the least, we need a 10-6 conference record to be in the NCAAT discussion.
3) We prob won’t beat UNC this year, and will likely lose at Duke

We should/could go 7-1 at home this year. We have 6 winnable road games. We take 3.
That puts us at 10-6 without necessarily upsetting anyone.

Winning home games is of utmost importance this year. the schedule is heavily in our favor to make a push for the postseason.

Backing the Pack previews Maryland here.

The Maryland Terrapins are arguably the biggest x-factor heading into league play, as they’ve recently added the services of Pe’Shon Howard, who’d been recovering from injury, and Alex Len, who’d been suspended for 10 games because the NCAA got bored or something. The Terps are probably a couple of years away from really making noise in the ACC, and the same could be said about NC State, but depending on how they adapt to the reinforcements from this point on, they could surprise some people in league play.

That said, this is a deeply flawed basketball team that is way too dependent on one player for offensive production, and their defensive play has left a lot to be desired. There’s only so much that one seven-footer can change in 20 games.

Offensively, this team is not as accurate as it was a year ago from anywhere on the floor. The Terps are also turning the ball over more often. But they’ve done a much better job of getting to the free throw line and they’re rebounding well at the offensive end, and that was before they added Len’s talents in that area (which are impressive). So they’ve been pretty good in the two least important factors.

Given that this is an average shooting club, and that the Pack doesn’t force turnovers but rather merely stumbles upon them, it’s more crucial than it might otherwise be to take care of the defensive glass. Limit Maryland’s second chance points and they’re likely to have a modest day offensively. Likely. I said likely. I make no promises, and this is not a jinx in any way shape or form. Not a jinx.

More importantly, we beat the Israelites by about 20 years; they wandered for 40 years in the wilderness. I think our wandering is over. — FDLMFAO

For the first time since we left Reynolds, we have a well-coached team. — AMEN to That!!!

Was at the game, and it was a great win, though we still got alot to work on when having a big lead, especially late it the game. My biggest complaint is the so called fans that didn’t even show up for the game. Lots of empty seats, and to those who didn’t feel they needed to be there, give your ticket to someone else who will show up and fill up the seat. We were on national televsion. So do the team a favor and show up for our next home game, because that’s what you buy tickets for.

Always good to beat the Terps. Still sloppy at the end of the game, but a win is a win. On to GT.

Just got home from the game. Agree totally with mak4dpak. The team is better, the coaching is better and now it is time for the fans to get better. Entirely too many empty seats. If for some reason you can’t make the game during conference season give your ticket to someone who can!!

good game but turned the ball over too much later im the second half. we could have just as easily won by 10 or 15 wich would hqve been a huge boost for the rest of the season but nevertheless we won

Just a thought about the seating. I tried to move from the third deck to empty seats on the floor (student tickets). Was denied the move because those are Student Wolfpack Club tickets, and were told it was because the ticket holders could show up at any time (this was 5 minutes after halftime). We tried guys…we tried.

Last time BAM and I went to a game with our wives (this season) we were sitting in our 300 level seats and one of the RBC attendants came by and gave us 100 level tickets in exchange b/c the game was televised and they wanted more people in the lower bowl. Nice to see that at least the RBC/AD is on top of trying to protect our image even if the season ticket holders aren’t 🙂

What a great victory. I’m so pleased with the hustle and effort that I haven’t seen out of a Wolfpack team in years. Coach Gott has really got these guys believing in themselves and Pack BB is fun to watch again. The players look to be in good shape and I think the tough schedule we played is paying off. I am excited by our prospects this year and am so glad that we have this current group of coaches. Congrats to the players and coaches.

I completely forgot that this was Mark Turgeon’s first ACC game, and his first loss. Nice.

Good “Hustle Win” for the team. Great effort from everyone on the floor. Was closer than it needed to be, but we’re not going to play against Stoglin every night – he was unconscious ! I can only think of two shots he took that weren’t contested; sometimes you have to tip your hat to an opposing player.

Was miffed that Len was allowed to foul at will with no consequence last night. Refs keep that up, and we’ll have another Hansblow to deal with…

TO’s by CJW and SW at the end of the game need to be addressed, and I’m sure they will be. Made the game unnecessarily close. Leslie, Howell and Painter all missed point-blank shots, but played well enough to command the paint.

Good start to the conference season, and glad we got Maryland out of the way before they get used to Len and Howard in the lineup.

did anyone hear Hubert say that Zo was the most complete PG in the ACC? My wife mentioned it to me (I did not get to see the first half).

  12. Rochester 01/09/2012 at 9:13 AM #

^I heard it. He said when you consider defense, passing, scoring, leading, that Zo was the most well-rounded. I wondered if it were the kind of comment he would make about whatever team’s PG he happened to be calling that night, but he definitely said it.

  13. Tau837 01/09/2012 at 9:31 AM #

^Not only that, he went on to say that most would question the assertion that Brown is the best PG by asking what about Kendall Marshall. Hubert said Marshall is the best passer, but Brown is the best all around. It sounded like it is something he believes, not just saying it because he was calling State’s game.

And Brown proved him right: 11 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 block, 4-7 from the field, 3-4 from the line, 1 turnover. That’s a great game.

One of the biggest pleasant surprises for me this year is how quickly ‘Zo made the transition to PG. Also, I think that AJ was a huge get for us. We would have been a lot worse off without him to back ‘Zo up.

For you who talked about changing seats to make it appear fuller, nice ideal, but if the fans showed up who claim to support the team, there would have been no seats to move to. So lets support them Wednesday nite with a better showing against Georgia Tech. I live out of town, and can’t make the game. as the game is late, with an early wake up call the next day. But practiced what I preached and got the ticket to someone to fill the seat.
