Maryland visits RBC for huge ACC opener (& game conversation entry)

Fans that like to explore ways to criticize The News & Observer don’t have anything to complain about today as the local newspaper gave the Wolfpack front page praise for improvement after a day of games where we didn’t even take the court and followed that up with more discussion about the season inside the paper.

Lorenzo Brown is starting to look more like a point guard. C.J. Leslie has figured out the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. Richard Howell’s game is blossoming. C.J. Williams is scoring.

As N.C. State heads into ACC play, the Wolfpack keep getting better. From where these players were last season, from where they were in October, the improvement up and down the roster is readily apparent – to fans, coaches and players.

“Everyone’s always been good,” Brown said. “We just needed an extra push to bring it out of us. I agree everyone’s gotten a lot better. And the new offense we’re running, it works for us.”

As a team, there are many markers of State’s in-season improvement: Just as one example, after late-game situations tripped the Wolfpack up against Indiana and Stanford, the Wolfpack won on a last-second shot against St. Bonaventure and held off a relentless challenge from Campbell.

Still, it’s the individual improvement that stands out, whether it’s Brown or Leslie or Williams or Howell or anyone else. They’re better players than they were a year ago. As N.C. State opens ACC play against Maryland today, they’re better players than they were a month ago.

“We’re getting there,” N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. “Each individual part has gotten better, and hopefully we can keep getting better as a team.”

Don’t misunderstand, tonight’s game with Maryland is HUGE for NC State across many fronts…not the least of which is that we get three of our first four conference games in Raleigh. (Great discussion on this topic available here.)

Home: Maryland, GT, BC, UVa, WF, FSU, UNC, Miami
Road: WF, Miami, UNC, BC, GT, Duke, Clemson, VT

I’ve been thinking on and discussing this for a while.
1) Our home schedule is easier than our road schedule, even discounting the fact that they are away.
2) At the least, we need a 10-6 conference record to be in the NCAAT discussion.
3) We prob won’t beat UNC this year, and will likely lose at Duke

We should/could go 7-1 at home this year. We have 6 winnable road games. We take 3.
That puts us at 10-6 without necessarily upsetting anyone.

Winning home games is of utmost importance this year. the schedule is heavily in our favor to make a push for the postseason.

Backing the Pack previews Maryland here.

The Maryland Terrapins are arguably the biggest x-factor heading into league play, as they’ve recently added the services of Pe’Shon Howard, who’d been recovering from injury, and Alex Len, who’d been suspended for 10 games because the NCAA got bored or something. The Terps are probably a couple of years away from really making noise in the ACC, and the same could be said about NC State, but depending on how they adapt to the reinforcements from this point on, they could surprise some people in league play.

That said, this is a deeply flawed basketball team that is way too dependent on one player for offensive production, and their defensive play has left a lot to be desired. There’s only so much that one seven-footer can change in 20 games.

Offensively, this team is not as accurate as it was a year ago from anywhere on the floor. The Terps are also turning the ball over more often. But they’ve done a much better job of getting to the free throw line and they’re rebounding well at the offensive end, and that was before they added Len’s talents in that area (which are impressive). So they’ve been pretty good in the two least important factors.

Given that this is an average shooting club, and that the Pack doesn’t force turnovers but rather merely stumbles upon them, it’s more crucial than it might otherwise be to take care of the defensive glass. Limit Maryland’s second chance points and they’re likely to have a modest day offensively. Likely. I said likely. I make no promises, and this is not a jinx in any way shape or form. Not a jinx.

This was a great start. The turtles played hard, but we held on. a “Should Win” against GT before a tough test on the road in WS next Sat. Yes, I said it, WF will be tough in their house. They beat a solid VPI team this past Sat. But we can get through this week 3-0 in the ACC looking at BC next (which will be 4-0). If we can pull that off, which we certainly can, I’ll be very excited (not that I’m not already).

Some nice props from Hubert Davis on ESPNU. His partner is totally lost. Good win under a lot of pressure from the turtles.

I’m old school – you must win home conference games.

We made some dumb mental mistakes that need to be corrected (AJ fouling the three point shots, blocking out on free throws, SW getting the ball picked late in the game) but we played hard for 40 mins. Great effort against a solid team.

This is great! It’s finally our time in the sun.

    I saw the last minute.
It is nice to see a win in the opener.

  7. JSRy2k 01/08/2012 at 8:56 PM #

Was unable to watch, but appears Zo may have been POG:
11 pts, 9 ast, 7 reb, 1 TO. Very impressive.

Good win. Tebow is just clutch. What a win.

  9. STLPack01 01/08/2012 at 9:03 PM #

Calvin had a double double. 20 and 11, plus 2 steals and an assist.

It was nice to see two GREAT wins for the good guys this evening (CBSK and NFL). And doubly good to see Cotchery make a tying catch in the Steelers’ losing effort. Love to see our State guys do well even if they’re on teams that I absolutely hate.

As for the basketball game, State had to have this one and they got it. Nice confidence-building win. They can jump up in the conference with the proper guidance–and I believe we’ve got the coach to do it.

I was glad to see a great win and yet another record performance for a PROVEN clutch QB named Brees. Also a class act and good guy who has done a lot for the community and is committed to the city.

This was a great win and a great start to the season. I like this team and their effort. Gottfried has done a great job thus far preparing this team up to now.

    ancsu87: you down in NOLA?

  14. tuckerdorm1983 01/08/2012 at 9:23 PM #

from where I stand and what I saw we should be 4-1 or maybe even 5-0 heading into chapel hill in a few weeks. That curl around the double screen with wood popping out about the foul line gave them fits. That and free throw shooting made the difference and of course coaching. MD could have easily won when they started their comeback at the end. Gott substituted enough so that we had enough gas in the tank going into the final minutes.

  15. ancsu87 01/08/2012 at 9:27 PM #

Yep down in NOLA. For the record I think Tebow is a good guy but I stop there and just wanted to have a little fun here while making sure people remember what an elite QB can really do for a team.

This thread really needs to be about a new coach who has brought back the feel of long-ago NC State BB!!!!! I never felt this with our last three coaches even when they won a few games and things looked like they might be on the upswing.

Didn’t see the game since the video feed kept dropping. But the balanced scoring looks nice, as does the FT %. 20, 19, 11, 10, 8, 7… and 87.5%… got to like that! Congrats on winning the opener guys.

  17. STLPack01 01/08/2012 at 9:40 PM #

anscu87: I’ve been down there several times to help rebuild homes with a church my buddy pastors at. I love your city!

  18. redwolf92 01/08/2012 at 9:47 PM #

So nice to see our guys not lose focus after the 8 minute timeout….that has been the story of the last 6-7 yrs

  19. Gene 01/08/2012 at 10:00 PM #

    Good win.

Glad it was a home game. I think we lose this one on the road.

Team needs to maintain focus better. There’s no reason Md. should’ve come back from 12 pt. deficit to cut it to within a bucket, in the closing seconds.

Just hoping we can eventually turn the corner and learn to drop the hammer on a team, when we are up.

I’d say this is also improvement over the Indiana and Stanford games, where we blew the leads.

Hats off to Gottfried and staff for the improvement in FT shooting over the beginning of the year.

Congratulations to Scott Wood on breaking Rodney Monroe’s consecutive FT’s made-streak tonight.

Our offensive struggles late were covered up by the fact that we shot very well from the line with the game on the line. The Richard Howell blown layup and tip were classic examples of what happens to this team at times. We had two really bad possessions around the 10 minute mark that were followed by the two hustle transition baskets, one a 3 point play, that Painter made. That was when I was really worried we were about to go into a major funk.

A slight edge for us on the boards and in the TO department. We were able to overcome 42% 3pt shooting by them by making 8 more FTs than they did. We gave up a lot of points in that department tonight. If we play the same kind of game against a decent FT shooting team we will lose. I was pleased with the defensive effort. We worked hard on defense for 40 minutes. We weren’t particularly smart at times, but the effort was excellent.

Winning the opener is huge. Better to start off ahead instead of behind. Also better for kids to think they can win instead of “OH NO….again”.
And just my opinion…I don’t think that we will bowl over people with huge wins. Our W’s will be a struggle.
It reminds me of our 82 team, we won 20 but it wasn’t pretty.

  22. choppack1 01/08/2012 at 10:24 PM #

That game will likely look really good in march. Tough win against an improving team.

We still have brain cramps at time…but overall a huge step in the right direction.

  23. tractor57 01/08/2012 at 10:32 PM #

chop – brain cramps for sure but as time goes by they seem less frequent

  24. burnbarn 01/08/2012 at 10:35 PM #

I thought we were in better shape than MD. When was the last time we thought that?

  25. 61Packer 01/08/2012 at 10:38 PM #

I think this might have been our best program win in this building.

We beat a good Maryland team by 5 points. More importantly, we beat the Israelites by about 20 years; they wandered for 40 years in the wilderness. I think our wandering is over.

For the first time since we left Reynolds, we have a well-coached team.
