Maryland visits RBC for huge ACC opener (& game conversation entry)

Fans that like to explore ways to criticize The News & Observer don’t have anything to complain about today as the local newspaper gave the Wolfpack front page praise for improvement after a day of games where we didn’t even take the court and followed that up with more discussion about the season inside the paper.

Lorenzo Brown is starting to look more like a point guard. C.J. Leslie has figured out the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. Richard Howell’s game is blossoming. C.J. Williams is scoring.

As N.C. State heads into ACC play, the Wolfpack keep getting better. From where these players were last season, from where they were in October, the improvement up and down the roster is readily apparent – to fans, coaches and players.

“Everyone’s always been good,” Brown said. “We just needed an extra push to bring it out of us. I agree everyone’s gotten a lot better. And the new offense we’re running, it works for us.”

As a team, there are many markers of State’s in-season improvement: Just as one example, after late-game situations tripped the Wolfpack up against Indiana and Stanford, the Wolfpack won on a last-second shot against St. Bonaventure and held off a relentless challenge from Campbell.

Still, it’s the individual improvement that stands out, whether it’s Brown or Leslie or Williams or Howell or anyone else. They’re better players than they were a year ago. As N.C. State opens ACC play against Maryland today, they’re better players than they were a month ago.

“We’re getting there,” N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. “Each individual part has gotten better, and hopefully we can keep getting better as a team.”

Don’t misunderstand, tonight’s game with Maryland is HUGE for NC State across many fronts…not the least of which is that we get three of our first four conference games in Raleigh. (Great discussion on this topic available here.)

Home: Maryland, GT, BC, UVa, WF, FSU, UNC, Miami
Road: WF, Miami, UNC, BC, GT, Duke, Clemson, VT

I’ve been thinking on and discussing this for a while.
1) Our home schedule is easier than our road schedule, even discounting the fact that they are away.
2) At the least, we need a 10-6 conference record to be in the NCAAT discussion.
3) We prob won’t beat UNC this year, and will likely lose at Duke

We should/could go 7-1 at home this year. We have 6 winnable road games. We take 3.
That puts us at 10-6 without necessarily upsetting anyone.

Winning home games is of utmost importance this year. the schedule is heavily in our favor to make a push for the postseason.

Backing the Pack previews Maryland here.

The Maryland Terrapins are arguably the biggest x-factor heading into league play, as they’ve recently added the services of Pe’Shon Howard, who’d been recovering from injury, and Alex Len, who’d been suspended for 10 games because the NCAA got bored or something. The Terps are probably a couple of years away from really making noise in the ACC, and the same could be said about NC State, but depending on how they adapt to the reinforcements from this point on, they could surprise some people in league play.

That said, this is a deeply flawed basketball team that is way too dependent on one player for offensive production, and their defensive play has left a lot to be desired. There’s only so much that one seven-footer can change in 20 games.

Offensively, this team is not as accurate as it was a year ago from anywhere on the floor. The Terps are also turning the ball over more often. But they’ve done a much better job of getting to the free throw line and they’re rebounding well at the offensive end, and that was before they added Len’s talents in that area (which are impressive). So they’ve been pretty good in the two least important factors.

Given that this is an average shooting club, and that the Pack doesn’t force turnovers but rather merely stumbles upon them, it’s more crucial than it might otherwise be to take care of the defensive glass. Limit Maryland’s second chance points and they’re likely to have a modest day offensively. Likely. I said likely. I make no promises, and this is not a jinx in any way shape or form. Not a jinx.

Could be the most important conference game of the season for us; in my opinion definitely our most important conference home game.

Today sets the tone for the rest of the season. We play a team with some talent and ability. A loss today would not sink us and a win today will not make us. However, a win today puts us one step closer to the big dance. A loss moves us toward the NIT.

I’ve been trying to take a wait and see approach to this year’s team and not expect too much from them this season. That being said, I cannot stand Maryland and would love nothing more than for the Pack to make a statement today and thoroughly throttle the twerps.

For those that are not aware, we haven’t beaten Maryland since Feb. ‘O6 IIRC. This game represents another “take it back” opportunity. No mercy.

I was going to a hybrid semi-liveblog, as I am also a lifelong Denver Broncos fan, and the rarest of all creatures (a Tebow moderate). By that, I mean that I would probably give him a full off-season and training camp to see if the switch flips on – but in no way would I unequivocally commit to him, nor would I stick with that junk high school offense. Either he learns to play a pro offense, or you bring in someone else who can. There’s a reason nobody runs a gimmick system in the NFL – defenses ALWAYS adjust. Always.

I also have no problem with Tebow personally – he’s not an ass in how he talks about his personal beliefs, and by all accounts he’s a genuinely decent, humble, and likeable guy. Now, his acolytes (OMG!!! They hate him because he’s a Christian!!!!!!) are annoying as shit – but that’s not HIS fault, and I’m not going to hold it against him.

If I were John Elway, I would find a Day Two/Three QB prospect, perhaps a guy like Kirk Cousins of Michigan State.

Oh, and I’m very excited for the ACC opener. If the Broncos are getting shit-canned, I may have to DVR it, though.

Huzzah for the competence of Mark Gottfried!

Hope this isn’t another one of those misery loves company days.

Would someone be kind enough to post a link to the broadcast for those of us without espn university?

Both teams on winning streaks. One thing I noticed the other night at the Delaware St game and that was we were playing to the level of competition until the score was 23-20. After that this team just hit the gas and never looked back.
I know we can’t do that in ACC play. I got a feeling from that game at that moment in which the score was 23-20. This team unlike last years knew it was time to really get ready for the ACC by the way they played the rest of the game. Total domination from that point. I believe that is going to help us tonight against the Terps instead of a game like the one we had against Campbell and NCCU.

    Timing is everything!

@phillypacker, I’ll look for a feed closer to tip-off (that’s how most of those work). Until then, I’m personally hosting a live chat where I’m sure SOMEONE will mention a stream. You definitely still want to keep on eye here at SFN, thought!

When was the last time we won our ACC opener?

I agree this neither makes nor breaks the season, but damn it would be great to get off on the right foot in conference play.

  10. Wufpacker 01/08/2012 at 5:39 PM #

    @phillypacker,
You can try this first row sports link, but as NCStatePride alluded to, it’s probably no better than 50:50 that it will work (or even still be there) come game time.

    @JSRy2k,
Last year….opened with a 21 point win vs. Wake.

  12. NCStatePride 01/08/2012 at 5:53 PM #

Poor Wake. There aren’t many programs I feel sorry for, but they are one of them.

  13. JSRy2k 01/08/2012 at 5:53 PM #

    Thanks Wuf.

Maryland has done nothing to even remotely impress me. In fact, their resume is quite shoddy in the sense that they haven’t played a single true road game, got trounced by a mid-major (Iona), and their largest margin of victory over a mid-major is 11 (Albany). Beating Notre Dame at home? Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then in his own backyard.

  14. NCStatePride 01/08/2012 at 5:57 PM #

Their best win is Colorado and loses are to Alabama, Iona, and Illinois. Draw your own conclusion.

  15. JSRy2k 01/08/2012 at 6:01 PM #

But, after beating WF last year we lost 3 in a row and 7 of the next 8 ACC games. The previous 4 years under Lowe we lost our first ACC game…at least.

  16. Wulfpack 01/08/2012 at 6:04 PM #

Tebow has definitely won me over with his play on the field. I was never a big fan, but it was mostly due to all the media hype. He is unconventional, but it’s working. Are the Broncs better with him? No question. Sure, he needs some work, but what young QB doesn’t. He can Cam Newton certainly have silenced the naysayers in short order.

  17. JSRy2k 01/08/2012 at 6:04 PM #

Pride, someone mentioned us stomping on an accelerator vs. Delaware State after the score was 23-20. Considering our results vs. majors are roughly the same as MD’s, the next place to look is mid-majors. It appears they don’t even have an accelerator. Does it mean they can’t or won’t beat us? Of course not, but to date it’s a point of performance in which we are markedly better.

  18. NCStatePride 01/08/2012 at 6:09 PM #

Eh, I feel like our schedule has been much more difficult, but arguing the quality of loses is a messy game. I understand your point.

Their wins are extremely un-inspiring. It’s an OCC schedule that Sendek would have been proud of.

  19. TruthBKnown Returns 01/08/2012 at 6:09 PM #

I don’t feel good about this game. We’re 10 point favorites (and apparently, Kenpom has us winning by 15). They have a couple of players available that were not around for many of their earlier games. And they’re not getting much respect. Disrespected teams scare me to death, especially considering this is Maryland, one of our worst nemeses.

I’m not saying we can’t or shouldn’t win. But I’m nervous about it.

  20. choppack1 01/08/2012 at 6:10 PM #

Huge game. We haven’t beaten umd since hwsbn was coach.

And bjd95 hopefully tebow brings his “a” game. He’s made some careless mental errors the last 3 weeks.

  21. BJD95 01/08/2012 at 6:13 PM #

Two excellent throws, need to keep it up!!

  22. redcanine 01/08/2012 at 6:17 PM #

I can’t believe what I’ma seeing with Tebow. He looks great today.

  23. Wufpacker 01/08/2012 at 6:22 PM #

Dang, Tebow has some serious helmet hair.

  24. Wufpacker 01/08/2012 at 6:23 PM #

Rothlisberger starting to look like Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville QB) did after we manhandled him all night.

  25. Wufpacker 01/08/2012 at 6:24 PM #

    Harrison is such a tool.
