Syracuse Game Thread (Sunday AM Update)

This is a huge game and State can win it.

SFN Sunday Update

This best sums up what we saw (WRAL):

“Not to say that we’re arrogant, but we’re No. 1 in the country for a reason,” the senior said. “Going into someone else’s home, it’s always going to be tough. Like I said, we held our composure — that’s what I took out of this game.”

The short version: State played hard and at times, extremely well, but wholly inconsistent.

State led 29-23 with 8:16 remaining in the first half before Syracuse turned into the nation’s top-ranked team and ended the half on a 24-4 run for a 47-33 halftime lead. State opened the second half on a 17-3 run and by the first TV timeout had tied the game at 50 and then kept it close until just before the under-eight TV timeout, when Syracuse capitalized on a string of about a half-dozen turnovers to push the lead to 10, and then extended it over the final minutes.

Box Score (ESPN)

State fell to 6-4 on the season, and will be at St. Bonaventure Tuesday, 7pm.

^cause this is the first year CALVIN ever had to WORK at bball.

  2. BJD95 12/17/2011 at 8:49 PM #

CJ forgets to hydrate before cramping up – but we need the new Calvin to do so.

It’s like when the Hurricanes hosted the Sabres in the playoffs – there are just a shit ton of upstate NY around these parts.

Oh rly? Hard to tell with this friggin internet feed is so choppy then gets completely cut off!!

  4. Rick 12/17/2011 at 8:50 PM #

Our first team has the talent to hang and even lead. But we play scrubs and get tired while they reload

  5. GAWolf 12/17/2011 at 8:50 PM #

I wonder that too, Rick. Does he not take care of himself, or does he have a physical issue going on that results in cramping?

  6. JohnGalt78 12/17/2011 at 8:50 PM #

All over now but the spread…

  7. GAWolf 12/17/2011 at 8:51 PM #

We move the ball better than we have in 25 years.

  8. tuckerdorm1983 12/17/2011 at 8:52 PM #

it was a good effort on our part

  9. NYPack 12/17/2011 at 8:52 PM #

What’s the point spread? Syracuse +7?

  10. millionbubbles 12/17/2011 at 8:53 PM #

Another year of bball irrelevance for the Pack, sweet.

This place is mostly Yankees. It’s rare you run into anyone around here who grew up in NC.

  12. BJD95 12/17/2011 at 8:54 PM #

True, GA. Still a lot of good, foundational stuff going on. Just won’t translate to as many wins as we would like this year. Give it time, and keep building that foundation.

For the record I was born in Charlotte and raised in Raleigh.

I have dead relatives all over downtown cemeteries.

I’m pleased with this showing tonight. There are tons of places to see progress.

  15. Rick 12/17/2011 at 8:56 PM #

    Agree with GA
You can see how we are 1-2 great players and 2-3 good players from being a top team

Cramping is not necessarily related to conditioning. It could be as simple as amount of sodium in a diet or as complex as a neuro-muscular problem. Its rarely something that can be fixed quickly.

I can’t be happy with a 16 point loss at home. Sorry.

  18. graywolf 12/17/2011 at 8:59 PM #

Well the effort is better than last year but thus far the same results. It is going to take time but we would have gotten blown out by + 30 last year after the melt down just before the end of the first half.
Officiating sucked. When your hear the name Hess and its an NC State game then its bad.

  19. tractor57 12/17/2011 at 9:03 PM #

There are no good wins while there some bad ones. To me this one fell into the not bad category. I saw better ball handling in general. A systematic approach to playing against a zone and overall better play. I also saw a lack of depth. All in all positive steps.

One thing we all have agreed on since the pre-season is that it is going to take more than ONE year to turn this around. At least, we are pointed in the right direction.

I think we will ‘surprise somebody’ before the end of this season.

  21. MickQ 12/17/2011 at 9:08 PM #

No defense. Offense too tentative. 88-72? Are you kidding me? At home? Are you kidding me? This team no has direction or focus or chemistry. Too bad. I really wanted Gott and team to be competitive. Naught! Sorry for the negativity, but once a beleaguered State fan, always a beleaguered State fan. This was a blowout at home, and is indicative of NC State Basketball for the last couple of decades or more. Don’t pump yourselves up….we are back to square ONE.

    ^thanks for the insight troll

Any comparisons of that game to this game are just BS. Today State came back from 14 down to tie the #1 team. Anyone who thought this year was going to be easy is just foolish. Of COURSE there is work to do, they haven’t been coached for 5 years…

  23. Whiteshoes67 12/17/2011 at 9:22 PM #

Simple recipe at this point. Too many turnovers; and way too many of the WTF variety. Poor recognition on the offensive end and poor perimeter defense. When we probed the middle tonight, we got good shots and scored efficiently and rarely turned it over. When we made too many horizontal passes, we turned it over. On the plus side, vastly improved ball movement and rebounding. Lo Brown is going to have to pick up his play in the half court if we’re to compete against top tier teams.

  24. swamppack 12/17/2011 at 9:22 PM #

Long time since State had any swagger, 20 yrs. to be exact. Even when Julius Hodge was here the team was mostly tentative. So hard to break a culture of losing. I see a lot of talent and playing together on this team. When does State get it’s swagger back? Could be this year, could be never. Cuse’ had swagger tonight.

  25. Whiteshoes67 12/17/2011 at 9:25 PM #

Swagger? Cuse had open look after open look, and consistently beat us off the dribble. The game was never in doubt, even after our runs. They’re consistent. We’re not. Gonna see a lot of that this year.
