Live Blog: Wolfpack vs Bonnies UPDATE: 67 NC State – 65 St. Bonaventure

Aw, man.  It sure sucks that we don’t have a link to an online video feed

Discuss the game below.  It’s on the radio on 101.5 from Raleigh.  For what it’s worth, we’re a 1 points underdog.  I will attempt to keep the game updated here on the blog!

1st HALF

14:20 – 12-6 Bonnies after coming out of the chutes at 7-0 Bonnies.  Not much to report on.

13:38 – 14-8 Bonnies.  Decent crowd showing up for St. Bonaventure.  Bonnies will be going to the line for a foul shot after the timeout.  UPDATE: missed FT.

13:16 – Howell being triple teamed under the basket, needing help but draws the foul.  Misses the first shot and makes the second.  Score 14-9 Bonnie.

12:48 – Painter tips in a 2 for 14-11.  Announcers make first mistake calling us “Carolina.”

12:26 – Johnson tries drawing a charge, Bonnie scores. 16-11.

12:05 – Wood goes to the line and (of course) makes them both. 16-13 Bonnie.

11:51 – Leslie with (another) foul.  Not sure how many that is, but it’s definitely not his first.

11:29 – 18ft shot by St. Bonnie makes it 18-13 Bonnie.

11:04 – Howell responds. 18-15.

10:28 – Awesome.  Bonnie hits a short jumper to go up 20-15, then NC State loses the ball out of bounds on the in-bound.  Perfect.

10:07 – Wood responds with his own jumper. 20-17.

9:48 – Bonnie nails a 2pt jumper. 22-17.

9:30 – Howell with the DUNK. 22-19 Bonnie.

9:18 – Wood, of all players, strips the ball away and gets a break-away lay-up. Anything can happen, I guess. 22-21.

8:30 – 24-21 after Bonnie rebounds a missed NCSU 3pointer.

7:52 – 24-23, Bonnie, after a couple of free throws.

7:17 – Jumpball, NC State.  Great, great defense for NC State on that possession and way to fight for the rebound on offense.  Apparently we bloodied up a Bonnie.

7:06 – Johnson gets a HUGE 3 pointers. 26-24 NC STATE!!!!!!!!!

6:30 – Johnson with ANOTHER 3 pointer… seriously, Alex, where did THIS come from?  29-24 NC State!

5:56 – Painter with a quick jumper. 31-24 NC State.

5:26 – Bonnie goes to the line for 2.  Makes the first and the second. 31-26 NC State.

4:52 – ALEX JOHNSON WITH ANOTHER 3 POINTER!!!!  That makes 3-in-a-row for Alex. 34-26 NC State.

4:23 – Bonnies with 1 FT. 34-27 NC State.

3:57 – Bonnies ending their shooting drought. 34-30 NC State.

3:11 – Bonnie with a huge dunk.  Poor defensive effort on our part. 34-32 NC State.

2:51 – Travel called on Wood behind the arc.  34-32 NC State.

2:38 – Johnson does a pretty good job defending the ball and gets a foul called.  Whatever.  34-34 all after the FTs.

2:20 – Wood drains a 3. 37-34 NC State.

1:24 – NC State loses the ball and results in Bonnie lay-up. 37-36 NC State.

44.8 – Bonnies get fouled and go to the line.  First FT is off turrrrrrribly.  Drains the second to tie it up 37 all.

3.# – Bonnies go into the half with the lead after a 3-pointer. 39-37 Bonnies.  F— me…………….

OVERALL: So-so all around.  A lot of good… some horribly bad… about what we’ve been seeing.  The good news is that there are periods of seeing this team really click.  Once again, turn-overs are killing us.

From @PackPride: “SBU shooting 50%, Pack 44%.”; “Pack doing a lot of fouling, 10 committed fouls, 4 players with 2 (Leslie, CJ Williams, Johnson, Painter). SBU has committed 4 fouls.”

Halftime Events: Watching a bunch of 7-8 year olds play basketball while listening to a rap song about shooting skeet.  Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on, either…

Halftime Events: At least these little kids travel less than Hansbrough use to…  I bet they can read Chicken Little a Hell of a lot better, too.

2nd HALF

19:38 – Howell tips in a basket. 39-39.

19:09 – Williams with a dunk and announcers calling us CAROLINA SECOND TIME THIS HALF!!!. 41-39 NC State.

17:55 – Great defense by State dead-balling the shot.  Oh yeah and announcers call us Carolina for the third time this half (they did it again as I was typing).

16:37 – Goaltending on NC State. 41-41.

16:05 – Bonnie lay-up and Wood gets popped hard. 43-41 Bonnies.

15:42 – Brown with a wide-open NBA 3. 44-43 NC State!

15:04 – Quick points for NC State. 46-43 NC State.

14:32 – Painter called for a foul will send Bonnie to the line.  Great defensive effort there, but the whole thing was brought about by a turnover so………… draw your own conclusions.  First FT is good.  Second is also good. 46-45 NC State, State’s ball.

SCOTT WOOOD: Back in the game with a taped nose.  He’s fine.

12:15 – 3 pointers for Bonnie. 48-46 Bonnie.

TURNOVERS: Alright guys, seriously.  It’s enough.  Past two possessions we’ve given away by traveling (once on Howell, once on Wood).  Wood was called for a travel not too long ago, also.  This is just a crappy way to trail in a ball game.

TURNOVERS: NC State get’s a big defensive stop and tries the half-court pass up to Brown.  Unfortunately it went straight into Bonaventure’s hands.  Stupid, stupid turnovers.

11:09 – 50-46 Bonnies after an easy lay-up.

CROWD: 5,800 fans there… most wearing colors not associated with either school.  Helpful suggestion to SBU: your fanbase isn’t exactly “pretty”.  Stop showing them.

9:55 – Bonnie battles for a basket and gets it. 52-46 Bonnies.

9:32 – 52-49 Bonnies.  Wood hits a fade-away 3pointer.

9:09 – 52-51 Bonnie after CJ Leslie dunk. Announcers starting to make excuses for Bonnie (missed calls, et al).

8:32 – 53-52 State after another Wood jumper.

8:05 – WOW!!!! THAT is what NC State is capable of.  3 vs 2 breakaway for State, Johnson takes the ball down, jacks it up to set Leslie up for a HUGE dunk. 55-52 State!

OBSERVATION: That is what makes this team frustrating.  We make dumb turnovers, but then when things click, we are absolutely sick.  That break away was textbook perfect.

7:45 – 55-54 State after 2pt jumper.

7:02 – Foul called on Painter.

OBSERVATION ON SBU: Their sponsors are the St. Bonaventure Penny Saver and they play songs about sexual bodily functions during little league halftime games.  There is something very disturbing about this place.

6:47 – Foul called and Bonnie goes to the line. Still 55-54 NC State.  Makes the first and the second putting Bonnie up 56-55.

6:30 – Wood at the line. Makes them both… of course. 57-56 NC State…. announcers now making stupid “He’s from Indiana and probably shot a ball every day of his life” comments.

4:47 – NC State defense keeps Bonnie from shooting at all on that possession.  Good defense.

3:34 – Wood at the line.  Makes both… again. 59-56 NC State.

FOUL TROUBLE: Painter and Williams both have 4 fouls.

3:20 – Bonnie scores a couple of FTs. 59-58 NC State, State with the ball.

2:27 – Shooting foul for Bonnie after we miss a bunch of shots on our end.  That will bring Bonnie ahead again, 60-59 Bonnies.

2:09 – Wood with the 2-point jumper to quiet the crowd. 61-60 NC State.

1:32 – Somehow Bonnie has the ball with 2 seconds left, throws the ball out of bounds, and still gets the ball.  Whatever, refs…

1:30 – They missed their shot.  NCState_Shit holds off this time…

1:08 – Williams with the lay-up. 63-60.

55.4 – Bonnie hits a 3 pointers (that particular player’s first 3 pointer of the night) to tie it up 63-63.

38.6 – Foul called against Bonnie, Wood at the line.  65-63 NC State.  Wood is awesome at the line….. Perfect.

22.5 – NC State holds the Bonnies from scoring on their possession, NC State takes the ball down and Bonnies swat it out of bounds.  Gottfried calls a TO to plan a move here.

TIME MANAGEMENT: It’s been a while since you’ve seen a coach at Raleigh that is so prepared to coach in tight, last-minute situations.  Against all of our loses, Gottfried has been coaching hard to the bitter end.  Hopefully this time it results in a win.  We are ahead by 2 and have the ball with less than half a minute left. 65-63 State, State ball.

16.7 – Out of bounds on Bonnie. Our plan is give it to Wood.  They are able to foul Johnson after Wood makes a quick pass.

12.8 – Johnson at the line.  Misses the first and Bonnie calls a timeout.  Tough miss for Johnson (you know he’ll catch a TON of flak for that if we lose this one as well as Wood for giving Johnson the ball in the first place).  11.1 seconds on the clock.

3.1 – Ball bounces off the shot clock and goes in the basket, but the clock isn’t fair game.  Shot won’t count, Bonnie gets two FTs.  Makes the first and Bonnie with a chance to tie the game with 3.1 seconds left.  Gottfried calls a timeout.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH: Come on, be honest…. you’re loving have a game this exciting… We’re addicted to the pain.

3.1 – Bonnie ties everything up.

OOOOOOOOHHHHH MY GOD!!!!!!!! BALL GOES IN AT THE BUZZER.  Refs are reviewing this, but what an amazing play.  What a crazy, amazing play.

0.8 – Bonnie ball.  Nothing going.

Game over.  NC State wins on a full-court pass to Leslie who almost shoots underhanded from behind the basket to make the score 67-65 NC State.  What a crazy game.

lush, I was typing mine as you posted yours. Didn’t mean anything at all toward your comment 🙂

Leslie: “I’m happy I made the shot, but I’m more happy that I finished a game.”

    ^lollllll

  2. pack76 12/20/2011 at 10:02 PM #

Calvin, you are not any happier than the rest of us that you finsished a game. Great job!!!!

After watching the video feed I’m darn tired of “Carolina State” but at least there was a feed to watch. Tough scrap and tougher than it could have been. Even so the team fought through it all and the CJ connection was golden at the end. Over the season a team must win these sort of games to be successful.

Other than that missed 1 and 1 front end I thought AJ had a great game.

Lots of areas uncovered again but some previous ones seemed to be addressed.

I like the fact Coach Gott shoots straight in his after game comments. It did not come across as complaining about the team rather an honest view of performance which is a base requirement for a “performance based organization”.

I was at the game tonight. I was so excited when they announced NC State was St. Bonaventure’s opponent this year. Bonnies usually play one game in Rochester every season. I haven’t seen the Pack live since the Sweet 16 in 2005 over in Syracuse (which is a pain in the a$$ to get to and ridiculously expensive). Tonight was way closer than I was hoping, but what a finish. When Calvin made that bucket at the end, the team went absolutely nuts. Then they announced it was under review and I was thinking, what can you be reviewing?

My thoughts: We missed way too many shots in close. Both Howell and Leslie, along with others, had contested but makeable buckets and it seemed like none of them went. The Bonnies are a big team, though, with several guys they can plug in down low. Nicholson is a handful. That kid’s got such a nice soft touch. Pretty much the opposite of Leslie, who fires everything hard at the rim from four feet out.

Scott Wood was unbelievable. He is so clutch and he made a lot of nice moves, taking contested shots inside the arc. Seems like the only wide open shots he had he missed. Richard Howell impressed me with his constant hustle. He was in on everything. fighting for loose balls and rebounds. Alex Johnson played very well at times, but he got abused defensively a couple of possessions, not moving to stop his man, resulting in wide open drives to the bucket. But, wow, I’ll take those 3 balls. Leslie gives effort like I never thought I’d see from him after last year. And Lo Brown gets a little too casual with the ball at least 2 or 3 costly possessions every game.

The Bonnies are a quality team. We should have handled them more easily than we did, but for being on the road against a tough opponent, it’s nice to escape with a W. We have work to do. It would be nice to see someone on the bench step up and earn some minutes over the next three games (which in theory should be plenty winnable, but I’ll take nothing for granted). We went 7 deep tonight, even with a couple of key players in foul trouble. None of the freshmen even got their warmups off.

I need to get to bed and hope my voice comes back before tomorrow morning. But that was fun. What a crazy finish.

Can anybody post the link to the “shot” at the end?

  6. Plz2BStateFan 12/20/2011 at 10:49 PM #

Saw a replay of the winning shot on the local news. WOW!

    Gotta love motivated athletic freaks!

  7. Rochester 12/20/2011 at 11:03 PM #

Cool to see the replay, but it looked 10 times more amazing live. I was amazed he was even able to catch the pass, let alone put up a shot from where he was, almost behind the backboard. When they put together a highlight reel from this season, that’s going to be a tough one to top. (Any shot that beats Carolina would do it, though.)

  8. stillapackfan 12/21/2011 at 12:23 AM #

This was not a quality win. UNX would have beat this team by 30.:

  9. 8pack 12/21/2011 at 1:14 AM #

That was absolutely a quality win. Any OOC road win over a sub-65 RPI team is a quality win. Anyway, this group is learning to close a game out. Also, not that it matters at all, but I seriously doubt Carolina would have won that game by 30. Probably more like 10-15. St.B is not Nicholls St.

Bottom line – We are 7-4 and should enter ACC play on Jan. 8 at 11-4 if we take care of business vs. Northeastern, Campbell, WCU, and Delaware St. So, 10-6 in the league should get us in the NCAA with what will probably be a decent SOS and RPI.

  10. tractor57 12/21/2011 at 7:54 AM #

A quality win from two aspects –

First a road win over a team with a decent RPI (and against the spread BTW).

Second the team finished – still some rough edges for sure but once again I see this team progressing with each game.

I have no idea where the season record will end but at thus point I’m still optimistic. The effort is there and so is the coaching. Neither absolutely perfect (I would not have left Johnson on the FT line alone and yes there were times when the ball handling was careless) but a much better effort than at any time last year. Of course easy for me to sit here with no consequence and decide how things should be done after they were already done.

  13. tractor57 12/21/2011 at 9:42 AM #

Nice V reference in the video link story!

What has been lost is the pass from CJW – this time it WAS a pass and a darn good one at that.

  14. VaWolf82 12/21/2011 at 10:22 AM #

ST Bonny’s current record puts them at 11th of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10 with an RPI of 81. So I don’t see how that qualifies as a good win.

  15. Rochester 12/21/2011 at 10:34 AM #

Will this win be one we point to with pride in March when making our case for a berth? No. But St. Bonaventure is hardly a cupcake, especially on the road. Not saying the Bonnies are an NCAAT team, but they will finish much higher than 11th in that conference. They led most of the game against Illinois before losing at the end (sound familiar?). Andrew Nicholson is one of the best centers we’ll face all year.

As to the “UNC would have beat them by 30,” etc., we’re not UNC, and we’re nowhere near as good as them this year, so if that’s your barometer for success, you’ll be disappointed. Enjoy this team for what it is or go find something else to do for a year or two until Gott can build up a roster deep enough to play 40 minutes of aggressive ball.

  16. NCStatePride 12/21/2011 at 12:00 PM #

^^Because yesterday they had an RPI of 50-something, IIRC, compared to ours of 71. ‘Good win’ isn’t well defined. It would be more accurate to say it was a good way to end a close game and/or it wasn’t a ‘bad win’ against a team with an RPI in the 300s.

  17. VaWolf82 12/21/2011 at 12:02 PM #

    Good win is easily defined:

For a bad team, it’s any upset win.

For a NCAAT team, it’s a win that will be worth discussing in March.

  18. Thinkpack17 12/21/2011 at 12:09 PM #

^Sounds like it will take a few months for us to know if it was a good win.

  19. NCStatePride 12/21/2011 at 12:10 PM #

^^They had a higher RPI than us going into the game. Gottfried has also said time and time again that “we are not there yet” for being an NCAAT team. By your own definition, it appears last night would have been a “good win”.

It’s completely subjective. That’s your definition. Good win or bad win, it was a win that increased our RPI from 71 to 57. We made a lot of the same mistakes, but also kept playing hard down the stretch.

Whether you want to get into a philosophical conversation about the definition of “good win” is up to you. Statistically, it was a “beneficial win”. (EDIT: This is probably a really interesting discussion, though, but I’ll take that to the message boards.)

  20. Wulfpack 12/21/2011 at 12:58 PM #

We likely lose this game the past 5 years. So for that, I say a good win.

This could be the year a 10 win ACC team gets snubbed. I think we can win 9 or 10. We’ll see how it all plays out. We’re making some steady progress. Let’s hope it continues throughout the year.

  21. blpack 12/21/2011 at 1:02 PM #

Good win as it stands today. We will take it.

  22. VaWolf82 12/21/2011 at 1:18 PM #

Sounds like it will take a few months for us to know if it was a good win

    This is an outstanding point.

But what are the odds that a win against a 0.500 Atlantic 10 team in Dec will turn out to be one worth discussing in March?

  23. VaWolf82 12/21/2011 at 1:22 PM #

By your own definition, it appears last night would have been a “good win”.

    ????

I’ve seen numerous posts here and on our forums projecting State in the NCAAT this year. If that is true, then last night’s win should fall under the expected category or maybe even the disappointed category. Of course the discussion about St Bonny isn’t nearly as bad as the ones claiming that NC-Central was a good team.

  24. wolfie91 12/21/2011 at 1:46 PM #

I have a hard time seeing how 9 or 10 wins in the ACC will put us in the NCAA tournament unless that means we finish 3rd. Not even sure our OOC record with a 4th place or less finish will cut it. Perhaps if we make a good run in the ACCT. But not really concerned about making the NCAAT this year, though I want us to. Would be happy for this season with having a good conference finish and making the NIT. Have to give Gott time to build a team, and while that shouldn’t take 5 years, will likely take more than just a few games.
