Bowl Developments – VPI to get BCS bid. Did BC loss cost State the Chik-Fil-A Bowl? (8:08pm)

8:05pm Update
If this website is correct and an 8-4 (5-3 in ACC) Virginia team that NC State handily beat in Charlottesville this year ends up in the Chick-fil-A Bowl….then it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the turd laid by the Wolfpack’s against Boston College ended up costing 7-5 (4-4) NC State a shot at playing in Atlanta.

The Champs Bowl confirms Florida State vs Notre Dame. (Link)

Original Entry
According Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel, the ACC may be getting an early Christmas present this year as Virginia Tech could be heading to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. (Link)

Your BCS lineup will be: Title: LSU-Bama. Rose: Wis-Ore. Fiesta: Ok St-Stanford. Sugar: Va Tech-Michigan. Orange: Clemson-West Va.

As of 8pm — there seems to be enough independent verification to confirm VPI to the Sugar.

This development threw the ACC Bowl selection process into turmoil. Check out this link to see how the Wilmington Star News has taken down their previously published ACC Bowl projections and replaced it with this entry.

The surprise choice of Virginia Tech to the Sugar Bowl has affected several other ACC bowl selections and thrown a wrench into at least a couple of prearranged deal. Among those whose plans have changed are WakeForest and North Carolina.

Instead of heading to Shreveport, La., to play in the Independence Bowl, the Deacons now appear to be headed to Nashville to playMississippi State in the Music City Bowl. The Tar Heels, once seemingly locked into the Military Bowl in WashingtonD.C., will now move up to theIndependence, where they will likely playMissourion Dec. 26.

N.C.State will still play in Charlotte’s Belk Bowl , as expected, against Louisville on Dec.27.

The bowl selections will be officially announced at 8:30 p.m.on an ESPN selection show.

I’m happy overall with the bowl we got. State doesn’t deserve anything better, would have been happy to see it though, with some of the games we played this year. Clt is not a bad bowl for a NC team to go to.

Just think guys, a month ago most of us did not expect us to be bowling at all. We were expecting a coaching search about now. There are a lot of big openings this year so it’s likely for the best that we keep TOB for at least another year.

“Not a bad deal for the Pack. I think we will travel to Charlotte much better than to ATL. Not sure the Pack would travel to ATL very well for this team, not the most exciting team to follow…

That’s not even close to being true. The Peach Bowl would’ve been sold out by day’s end if we went.

Agree we pretty much got what we deserved. It wasn’t just BC but not being ready to play against Wake cost us as well.

Karma is oh, so kind to the holes. If you’ve never visited the cultural mecca that is the greater metropolitan Shreveport/Bossier City area ,well, you haven’t missed much. AND it’s the day after CHristmas. What a crowd that should be!

VT getting that second BCS bid is great for the ACC. I think that’s the first time we’ve had two teams in the BCS — but it’s also one of the few years that there have been 10 BCS teams.

VT needs to win though. They can’t go and lay yet another big game egg. Michigan is good, but beatable. I’m glad for VT that they’re not playing Michigan State.

Clemson/WVa is the most “ho hum” of the BCS games. They need to win though as well.

I’m glad we’re not playing Auburn. I think they have too much speed for us and oddly think that Va could do better with them. I think it’s a loss either way though. I think Louisville is a winnable game.

Teams that got shafted? Houston and Boise State are two one loss teams that could beat VT, Clemson and WVA. I also think that Michigan State got hosed a bit as well as I think they’re better than VT, Clemson or WVA as well.

NCSU has an outstanding reputation for travel to bowl games, which always makes us attractive from an invitation perspective. The choice of UVa over NCSU can only be explained as a ramification of the unexpected BCS invite for the Hokies. I agree that the deal was likely already made and, if anything, we said no to the Peach based on our previous “committment” rather than the other way around. But we’ll never know.

And LRM is 100% right, if we had been invited to Atlanta, our allotted tickets would be sold by end of day. Never underestimate our fans’ willingness to travel. Even with a schizophrenic team.

“Something else to chew on. If we beat BC and Wake we would have been playing for the ACC title Sat. night. Our conference record would have been 6-2, tied with Clemson.”

If you think we would not have choked on that Clemson game (had we actually beaten BC and Wake) then you have not watched TOB coached teams for very long.

Are people still talking about TOB as if there’s a chance we might replace him? Not gonna happen this year. May as well file that link away until next December, if then.

if anything, we said no to the Peach based on our previous “committment” rather than the other way around.

ACC schools can not decline a bowl bid because they would prefer to go to a different bowl. The only exception that I know of is if the bowl is scheduled during exams….UVA swapped bowls several years ago.

@ Rick..lol..so true. This team deserves the “Belk” bowl imo.

Mercy, you think WE had some embarrassing losses this year? They lost to FIU and Marshall at home, and then later beat West Virginia in Morgantown…

How about the fact that if O’Brien doesn’t let Wilson go, then State wins not only BC game, but Wake & probably GT as well, minimally first 2 which would have put State in ACC Title game & worst case scenario Chick A Lay Bowl. Thank you O’Brien, please retire after this game because he will not fire Bible & don’t think Yow will pull trigger on it either at this point.

Too bad Wilson wasn’t an option for him that he was sure he could count on at the time.

If thats what you think you are so far removed from reality its stupid. No one cares about this avg team.

No one in my family is going to Charlotte….we would have bought 10+ tickets to the Peach Bowl.

“If thats what you think you are so far removed from reality its stupid. No one cares about this avg team.”

Uh….no. If you don’t think that you are the one that needs the reality check.

And we care so much about this team that we sell out damn near every game, even a Clemson game that looks like an ass whipping waiting to happen, and the GT game the week after one of the most putrid awful games of the year against Cincy.

And real simply, would you rather go to Charlotte on 12/27, or ATL on New Years’ Eve?

Funny thing is about a month ago we all thought a bowl picture was unthinkable (Hell the ending of the first half of the Maryland game we thought we weren’t going to a bowl) but now that we are going to a bowl, people are complaining about not going to a better bowl game…

If the Peach bowl wanted us then they would have taken us. I’m glad for the Belk since I’m in Winston Salem and bought basketball tickets for Dec. 31. Let’s pack the stadium and be happy we are going bowling!

  17. wolfonthehill 12/06/2011 at 6:22 AM #

Would have been in Atlanta… can’t make Charlotte 2 days after Christmas due to family commitments.

Agree we would’ve taken 30k to the Peach… damn shame… would’ve been a good time… maybe erase the 1992 game from my mind…

  18. baxter 12/06/2011 at 9:52 AM #

My understanding is the CFA wanted to limit the number of teams that would be playing there next year from travelling twice to the event, or being turned off potentially from travelling twice. Auburn/Clemson would travel regardless, but State might not.

They were talking about it on the radio down here, they really didn’t want Clemson vs. Auburn.

  19. baxter 12/06/2011 at 9:54 AM #

I’d rather us be in Charlotte, its a lot easier for the majority of Pack fans to make it there vs. Atlanta. I don’t think we would have had 30k butts in the seats, but who knows. I know its a lot cheaper to be in Charlotte than Atlanta though, so I think this works out for the majority of wolfpack nation.
